My apologies for taking so long to communicate after assuming the office of Kingdom Chronicler. My fall event season was a whirlwind (to say the least) and I am just starting to catch up. Before speaking a bit about my plans I would like to acknowledge a few people.
First and foremost, I would like to thank the outgoing Kingdom Chronicler, Dame Aine O’Muirghesan and her deputy, Lady Aerin (Euron), Wen Pengrek for their hard work and service. Dame Aine served as Kingdom Chronicler during one of the hardest times in recent memory and was a strong link in the chain that held us together. Lady Aerin mentioned in a recent conversation (and pardon me if the time is not exact) has served as the Chronicler for the Shire of Coppertree for well over ten years as well as serving as Deputy Kingdom Chronicler. The job of a Chronicler on any level is never an easy one and you are both a credit to the Society and the Kingdom.
A large part of my work as Chronicler will involve administrative tasks including information tracking, review of policy, compliance, and communication with local Chroniclers. This is a job I cannot accomplish alone. Assuming the role of my new deputy is Lady Thalia Papillon. Thalia’s experience from ÆLive, the Æthelmearc Gazette, as well as numerous autocrat and officer positions will prove invaluable to the Chronicler’s office.
Baroness Amalie Reinhardt remains at the helm of the historian’s office. Amalie’s appointment to this position (as well as her hard work) predates me, so I claim no credit for such a fine choice for historian. I am glad she is part of the team and I know we can all look forward to her continued efforts in documenting our rich history.
Over the next few weeks, either I or Lady Thalia will be reaching out to the Chroniclers of the Kingdom to touch bases. I hope to speak to each of you about your thoughts on the future of newsletters, increasing exposure, and encouraging participation of the populace. I welcome all input and understand that many of you have a great deal of experience. I welcome tapping into that. If you have need of me prior to that, please feel free to reach out to me anytime.
To the Kingdom, I hope I can live up to half of the accomplishments of my predecessors and look forward to my time as Chronicler.
Baron Magnus de Lyons
On October 27, 2021, at a Special Meeting of the SCA Board of Directors, the Board took a rare step and unanimously voted to remove King Christian Bane as the current Sovereign of An Tir, effective immediately. The Board reached this painful decision after significant deliberation and with the advice of our Officers.
At this time, An Tir remains in the capable hands of Queen Helene d’Anjou, until the Coronation of the Heirs to the Throne. We wish great success to her Majesty in serving independently for the remainder of Her Reign.
Yours in Service,
SCA Board of Directors

Additionally, all event goers over the age of 2 must wear masks indoors regardless of vaccination status. Unvaccinated folks must wear masks both indoors and outdoors. No eating indoors.
Although the SCA complies with all applicable laws to try to ensure the health and safety of our event participants, we cannot eliminate the risk of exposure to infectious diseases during in-person events. By participating in the in-person events of the SCA, you acknowledge and accept the potential risks. You agree to take any additional steps to protect your own health and safety and those under your control as you believe to be necessary.
I know we’ve had a number of changes lately. We have another one. Corporate has informed me that the previous sign in sheet does not match their requirements. Here’s the updated information:
1. Everyone who physically attends an event/practice/gathering/etc. has to provide their name and contact information. That should go to the local Seneschal and be kept for 60 days. You only need name and contact information.
2. The attestation sheet should be a separate sheet and should go to the Kingdom Seneschal – a picture of that signed sheet should be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org – or send it to the Kingdom Seneschal via regular mail, and that address can be found in the Æstel.
Basically, Corporate et al did not like us combining the two sheets. However, this should streamline the process a bit – Covid Vax/Test Checkers can just visibly look at persons’ ID and proof and wave them through, and then sign the attestation form once Gate/Troll/Practice is over. The Checkers do not have to write anything else down.
I am sorry for the confusion. My deepest apologies and I greatly greatly appreciate your patience.
PS. If you need an attestation sheet, the East Kingdom made one – https://seneschal.eastkingdom.org/docs/covwaiv.pdf
The days of strangeness and plague continue in new and varied ways, but time moves on and so must we.
We – Bran and Gavin – have had the honor and delight of serving as your Sylvan Bard (dipartite) this year, and with Their Majesties Gareth and Juliana’s ascension to the Sylvan Throne, the time has come to determine who will take up the mantle next.
While Kingdom Tradition holds that the successor to the role is chosen by competition at the Kingdom 12th night celebration, the continued pestilence means we will be without that opportunity.
SO, we will create a new opportunity in its place!
**Beginning October 7th, and proceeding through the last day of December, we will be accepting shortish (say 3-7 minutes, hard limit of 10min) performance VIDEO RECORDINGS via the Sylvan Bard email – email here. (Please send us a link to a location we can download from, like dropbox or google drive)
Song! Story! Poem! Bring us your best delightful performance in celebration of the new year, rebirth and renewal, and an eventual return to our desired ways of doing things.
We will send you a receipt email, and will curate the performances together into a 12th night concert/competition, with performances by ourselves, and your wonderful personages, from which Their Majesties will select their new Bardic Champion.
Any questions may be directed to the sylvan bard email above. Thank you, break a leg, and be well and joyful!

Greetings from Illadore.
As you have likely seen, the SCA is allowing Kingdoms to adopt their new COVID Policy. In consultation with Their Majesties and Duke Christopher (our Deputy Kingdom Seneschal for Pandemics), Æthelmearc *will* be adopting that policy and it will go into effect next Monday, October 4th.
We want to give the Kingdom a week to come up with their questions and get prepared. The policy requires that everyone over the age of 11 (so 12 and up) to either show their proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test within the past 72 hours.
The Board of Directors has also clarified that by “events”, they are using the Corpora definition. This means any event, practice, gathering, meeting or anything else we do in physical spaces is covered by this policy. (Obviously, you do not have to show your vaccine card to attend a Zoom.)
We know this is going to be a burden for some and others will choose not to attend. I understand your feelings and I sincerely hoped we would not be in this position at this time. Unfortunately, the pandemic is continuing and we still have widespread community transmission in every county in Æthelmearc. It is our assessment this policy will make those attending AE events safer for more people. We feel this is the way towards getting back to a “more normal.”
This also means our first actual “event event” that will require the policy will be the Æthelmearc October 9th Crown Tourney. There will be no exceptions to the policy for that event. Everyone who attends who is 12 and up must be vaccinated or show proof of a negative test within 72 hours of the event.
This is going to require a change in how we do a few things – first and foremost, we will have to check-in first at an event. This will likely slow down trolling in, so you may have to add time into your plans.
We know you have many questions. I will be doing more updates in the near future (including a summary of all the policy rules for Æthelmearc) and His Grace Duke Christopher and I will be holding a Zoom town hall next Tuesday.
Stay safe my friends,
Regional Vice President, SCA Æthelmearc
Illadore de Bedegrayne
The SCA Board of Directors aims to balance getting Society participants back to doing the things we love with measures that support Kingdoms in protecting all that people have worked so hard for. Our COVIDSafe Resolutions provide a flexible, risk based framework that allows Kingdoms in the United States and Canada to put in place a core set of requirements that event organizers and individuals must adhere to, based on their current environment and public health directions and advice.
As more information becomes available, the Board reviews and updates its resolutions where necessary in line with its responsibility to act diligently, with due care and in good faith. This is never more important than with issues related to the health and safety of our participants.
In line with this approach, based on changing circumstances and updated expert advice, on September 25, 2021, the Board has resolved the following:
Proof of Fully Vaccinated Status or Negative COVID Test
In addition to the existing policy allowing Kingdoms to establish a mask policy, Kingdom Seneschals in consultation with the Crown shall have the discretion to implement the following policy requiring proof of COVID vaccination or a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of an event start time from all event attendees:
Events are any activities defined in Corpora II.A, Society Events Defined
Proof of being fully vaccinated must be in the form of a government issued card (original or photograph) or an electronic record.
Proof of negative COVID test must be issued from a licensed medical provider and presented in such paper form or electronic form that the event staff can verify its authenticity. Letterhead from a medical provider or an email address clearly identifying the medical provider as the sender of an electronic record shall constitute authentic proof.
All persons over the age of 18 must present government issued photo identification along with the proof of being fully vaccinated or a negative COVID test. Parents and guardians of minors must present their own identification along with proof of being fully vaccinated or a negative COVID test for all minors attending an event in their care.
Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test shall not be required for children under 12. Children that are aged 3-11 shall wear a mask.
In addition to the normal sanctions process, anyone challenging event staff regarding the enforcement of this COVID policy shall be denied entry to or be immediately removed from the event.
The Kingdom must have one person at a time checking the proof of being fully vaccinated or a negative COVID test at an event. The event organizer, or their designee, shall maintain a list of names and times of the person(s) conducting the check at the entrance. Once the entrance is closed at the event, said person(s) will sign a statement at the bottom of the list of names and times, which reads:
“I have monitored the event entrance at the times noted above, and I have verified that each person entering the event during that time has shown me proper identification, along with either proof of being fully vaccinated or a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of the start of the event.”
Kingdom Seneschals shall notify the Society Seneschal where local, state, provincial, or national law supersedes this policy.
This policy shall not apply to Lochac and Drachenwald.
A copy of this resolution is available here: https://www.sca.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/COVIDsafeVaccination-and-Testing-Policy-9-25-21.pdf
As is tradition, all who wish to compete in the tournament must satisfy all requirements in Æthelmearc Kingdom law. In addition, we wish the following from potential heirs:
First, all fighters and their consorts must be present for the entirety of the tournament.
Second, the use and presence of banners displaying both fighters and consorts devices for the procession is highly encouraged.
Third, all fighters should make a thorough effort to hide modern armor and attire. Non-intrusive modern footwear is acceptable.
Finally, those vying to succeed Their Highnesses should have been active in this Kingdom, especially in the time preceding the pandemic.
Letters of intent should be received no later than September 16.
We look forward to a tournament full of honorable combat to determine Our Heirs!
Gareth & Juliana
Crown Prince & Princess of Æthelmearc
