With Ice Dragon looming and Arts & Sciences on our collective minds, the following poem seems to beautifully capture what many of us have gone through, are going through, and will go through, in our never-ending quest to make the thing. Enjoy!

Weaving your dreams

for Maestra Elisif Gydasdottir

The first time you saw it,
You knew from the start
That thing they were making
It captured your heart
Igniting your dreams, you had found your key
“One day -I just know it- the maker will be me!”

Weaving your dreams with threads spun of gold,
Until those dreams blossom, and a wreath then unfolds
So heart all afire
You set on your path,
Materials were needed
But God, what was what? You tried all the wrong things and some right ones too
But all of a sudden, it was a thing you could do

Sewing your dreams, with fabric by the bolt
Until those dreams blossom and a wreath then unfolds

Not perfect, not pretty
That very first try
But proud as a mother
Until time passes by
Then all of a sudden, flaws were all you could see
And you started thinking, it may NOT be for me.
Singing your dreams, with verses so old until those dreams blossom and a wreath then unfolds

But then someone saw you
and all that you tried
A hand on your shoulder
always there when you cried
They traveled along you, they shared their own art
They gave you their time and a piece of their heart.
Beading your dreams with glass bright and bold
Until those dreams blossom and a wreath then unfolds

And all of a sudden
Or after long years
Your skills started flying
More joy now than tears
Some projects you bled on, or cursed, sometimes both
But people were talking, they noticed your growth

Giving voice to your dreams with stories you told
Until those dreams blossom and a wreath then unfolds

The project of doom
Cost you nights without rest
doubts, tears, and yet trust now
Because it would be your best
You knew the way forward, right from the start
Because that thing you were making
had captured your heart.

Weaving your dreams with threads spun of gold,
Until those dreams blossom, and a wreath then unfolds

Your name is well known now
your guidance they seek
From student to teacher
for the bold and the meek
Who say as they sit and and they look at your art
“That thing you are making has captured my heart.”

The poem was written by Baroness Machteld Cleine in 2020, for her friend Ellisif Gydasdottir who was given her writ to sit vigil at Gulf Wars to contemplate joining the order of the Laurel. Her friend had mentioned that while there were many songs in one way or another of the journey from squire to knighthood, there were none that came to mind about an apprentice’s journey to the becoming a master or mistress of their craft.

Baroness Machteld said “As a friend.. I had to try and fix that.” She wrote this poem, which has the wonderful potential to be put to music, to make the event special for her. It was intended to be performed on site, but due to the Plague has been shared on paper, for now. Baroness Machteld wants it to be also available for others, as well as honoring her mentor Mistress Marion Leoncina di Susa and all the other people who ‘guide’ along the road.

Crosss Game Bardic & Performance Circle

29 Sunday Nov 2020

Posted by aethgazette in Bardic, SCA @ Home

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2020 AT 8 PM EST – 11 PM EST

Come, one and all (but not you), to your local neighborhood virtual performance circle! Whether you’d just like to listen, perform once, or any chance you get, please tune in.

We’ll do the Pick/Pass/Play format for a little more organization. The queue will consist of the attendees in how they appear in the list. On your turn, your options are to Pick someone else to go or request another piece/theme/etc., pass to the next person in line, or play meaning perform a piece of your choice.

Time slot: 11:00 pm EDT may be a soft boundary for ending the circle, depends on what the energy is like at the end.

Material/theme: There are no limits either to fantasy or historical, as we’ll have attendees from a variety of games. For Earth history, try to keep it pre 1800s, though modern folks with fantasy and historical material are fine. Game specific songs (about units, weapon building, fighting rules humor, etc.) are welcome, too. If you’re uncertain, feel free to ask the host. Stories, songs, poems, instrumental pieces–all are welcome!

SCA Bards Bring Beowolf To Zoom

29 Thursday Oct 2020

On November 14 and 15, Beowulf the Ethereal Event will present all of Beowulf, performed live on Zoom.

https://www.eastkingdom.org/event-details/?eid=3693

Beowulf the Ethereal Event will feature the talents of 50 performers from 8 kingdoms: East, AEthelmearc, Atlantia, Ealdormere, Meridies, Midrealm, Northshield, and West.

The performance is being produced by the artistic team from Beowulf the Event (East Kingdom, 2011), Beowulf the Roadshow (Pennsic 2011 & 2012), and Njal’s Saga (AEthelmearc, 2017).

Beowulf the Ethereal Event will be livestreamed to the East Kingdom’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/SCAEastKingdomEthereal

The entire epic will be split into two performances:
Saturday night, Nov 14, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday afternoon, Nov 15, at 2:00 p.m.

The poem tells the story of the hero Beowulf who rescues the Danes by killing the monstrous Grendel. He goes on to kill Grendel’s mother, become king, and then in his old age must face a dragon. Throughout the story, he learns lessons about kingship, feud, and the dangers inherent in fighting a monster

The performance will be presented with the natural, organic backgrounds of our homes such as bookshelves, workshops, home offices, kitchens, and living rooms.

We will tell the story without stage magic, but instead will use the available medium to bring Beowulf into the homes of the audience.

While the exact age of Beowulf is not known, the anonymously written poem is the earliest work of full scale English literature.

Beowulf consists of 3182 lines of poetry. It takes three and a half hours to perform it in its entirety.

The artistic team gratefully acknowledges the support of the East Kingdom Web Ministry, and the East Kingdom Ministry of Arts and Sciences.

The artistic team is:
Director: Master Toki Skáldagörvir (AEthelmearc)
Stage Manager/Company Manager: Mistress Jenevra de Carvalhal (East)
Academic and Literary Advisor: Prof. M. Wendy Hennequin (Tennessee State University, Nashville)
Assistant Director: Mistress Tyzes Sofia “Zsof” (Midrealm)
Assistant Director: Lucas Abernathy (East)

Director Toki Skáldagörvir is excited to be a part of the production.

“Beowulf is still relevant today. Leadership matters, well-earned loyalty is essential, and pride is a dangerous path,” Toki said, adding that Nietzche’s much later advice was true for Beowulf, and is true today, “Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster.”

Æthelmearc Performers Sought for the Known World Bardcast by June 15

Known World Bardcast

Greetings, one and all, from Gwendolyn the Graceful, Brehyres, OL!

This is a reminder that there’s an open call for audio recordings of songs, instrumental music, or spoken word performances to be submitted for a forthcoming episode of the Known World Bardcast. The KWB is run by Master Gideon ap Stephen of Atlantia, though this episode is being produced and hosted by Magister Andreas Blacwode of the Midrealm. Check out past episodes here:  https://knowneworldbardcast.com/

This episode is intended to highlight the performers of the Kingdom of Æthelmearc. Selections should be relevant to an SCA audience, and must be appropriate for listeners of varied ages. Selections can be already available elsewhere, such as on recorded CDs, websites, or channels, or if you wish, you can record something specifically to send to the podcast.

If you’d like to be considered for inclusion in the episode, please provide your audio recording to Andreas by June 15. You can submit in whatever digital format you have available (i.e., MP3, WAV, FLAC, etc. — the higher quality the better). You can email it to him at baronandreas@midrealm.org  or share a GoogleDrive file to the same address.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or Andreas directly.
This is a great opportunity for us to share our talents with the Known World! You’ve got about a week to do it, so I hope many of you will consider submitting a song, poem, or story for the Bardcast!

Ever in Service,
Gwen

A Ray of Sunshine in These Troubled Times

A&S, Gulf Wars

By Baroness Machteld Cleine of Atlantia, as posted on the SCA Bardic Arts Facebook group, reprinted with permission.

At Atlantian Twelfth Night, my dear friend Ellisif Gyðasdottir was given her writ to sit vigil at Gulf Wars to contemplate joining the order of the Laurel.

I was super happy for her (and super disappointed I could not attend even before pandemic had reared its head). She mentioned to me that while there were many songs in one way or another of the journey from squire to knighthood, there were none that came to mind about an apprentice’s journey to becoming a Master or Mistress of their craft.

As a friend… I had to try and fix that. Originally three wonderful bards: Lady Keris Silber, Mistress Lanea Verch Kerrigan, and THL Silence de Cherbourg would be my emissaries to at least read the words to her. With Gulf Wars cancelled, I sent it to her as a comfort for the vigil that is only postponed! I tried to make it special to her, but also available for others, and I wanted to honor her mentor Mistress Marion Leoncina di Susa, as well as all the other people who ‘guide’ along the road. I will probably still tinker a tiny bit, but here it is:

Weaving your dreams
for Maestra Elisif Gyðasdottir

The first time you saw it,
You knew from the start
That thing they were making
It captured your heart
Igniting your dreams, you had found your key
“One day -I just know it- the maker will be me!”

Until those dreams blossom, and a wreath then unfolds

So heart all afire

You tried all the wrong things and some right ones too
But all of a sudden, it was a thing you could do

Sewing your dreams, with fabric by the bolt
Until those dreams blossom and a wreath then unfolds

Not perfect, not pretty
That very first try
But proud as a mother
Until time passes by
Then all of a sudden, flaws were all you could see
And you started thinking, it may NOT be for me.

Singing your dreams, with verses so old
Until those dreams blossom and a wreath then unfolds
