A&S, Gulf Wars

By Baroness Machteld Cleine of Atlantia, as posted on the SCA Bardic Arts Facebook group, reprinted with permission.

At Atlantian Twelfth Night, my dear friend Ellisif Gyðasdottir was given her writ to sit vigil at Gulf Wars to contemplate joining the order of the Laurel.

I was super happy for her (and super disappointed I could not attend even before pandemic had reared its head). She mentioned to me that while there were many songs in one way or another of the journey from squire to knighthood, there were none that came to mind about an apprentice’s journey to becoming a Master or Mistress of their craft.

As a friend… I had to try and fix that. Originally three wonderful bards: Lady Keris Silber, Mistress Lanea Verch Kerrigan, and THL Silence de Cherbourg would be my emissaries to at least read the words to her. With Gulf Wars cancelled, I sent it to her as a comfort for the vigil that is only postponed! I tried to make it special to her, but also available for others, and I wanted to honor her mentor Mistress Marion Leoncina di Susa, as well as all the other people who ‘guide’ along the road. I will probably still tinker a tiny bit, but here it is:

Weaving your dreams
for Maestra Elisif Gyðasdottir

The first time you saw it,
You knew from the start
That thing they were making
It captured your heart
Igniting your dreams, you had found your key
“One day -I just know it- the maker will be me!”

Weaving your dreams with threads spun of gold,
Until those dreams blossom, and a wreath then unfolds

So heart all afire
You set on your path,
Materials were needed
But God, what was what?
You tried all the wrong things and some right ones too
But all of a sudden, it was a thing you could do

Sewing your dreams, with fabric by the bolt
Until those dreams blossom and a wreath then unfolds

Not perfect, not pretty
That very first try
But proud as a mother
Until time passes by
Then all of a sudden, flaws were all you could see
And you started thinking, it may NOT be for me.

Singing your dreams, with verses so old
Until those dreams blossom and a wreath then unfolds

But then someone saw you
And all that you tried
A hand on your shoulder
Always there when you cried
They traveled along you, they shared their own art
They gave you their time and a piece of their heart.

Beading your dreams with glass bright and bold
Until those dreams blossom and a wreath then unfolds

And all of a sudden
Or after long years
Your skills started flying
More joy now than tears
Some projects you bled on, or cursed, sometimes both
But people were talking, they noticed your growth

Giving voice to your dreams with stories you told
Until those dreams blossom and a wreath then unfolds

The project of doom
Cost you nights without rest
Doubts, tears, and yet trust now
Because it would be your best
You knew the way forward, right from the start
Because that thing you were making
had captured your heart.

Weaving your dreams with threads spun of gold,
Until those dreams blossom, and a wreath then unfolds

Your name is well known now
Your guidance they seek
From student to teacher
for the bold and the meek
Who say as they sit and and they look at your art
“That thing you are making has captured my heart.”

cooking, Feast, Gulf Wars, Period Recipe

Sent to us by Mistress Illadore from her 2019 Gulf Wars meal plan for the Æthelmearc encampment.

Viva la France! Let us eat like Queens!
A historical review of French Cookbooks and French Queens
History lessons on French Queens, based on French cooking manuscripts available at the time. Let us eat like queens.

Monday – Joan I of Navarre. She was the Queen Consort to Philip IV of France, who was emotionally dependent on her. Mother of the She-Wolf of France (Isabella, Queen of England) and the last Capet King, whose death started the 100 Years War. She had her first child at 15, raised and led an army at 24, and died at 32.

Period Manuscript: Enseignements qui enseingnent a apareillier toutes manieres de viands.  Early French cookery book from 1300, well used as it’s covered in food stains. Considered to be the oldest cookbook in France. Cooks comments – this cookbook is almost entirely nothing but meat. I had to use other non-French recipe books to help fill out the menu.

Here’s a recipe from Monday:

Grilled Pork Chops with Green Garlic and Onion Gravy

Original translation found here (c) 2005 Daniel Myers, MedievalCookery.com, Lines 13-18

4 pork chops
8 cloves of garlic, minced
1 onion, minced
1 tbs olive oil
1 tsp ground pepper (or to preference)
1/2 tsp grains of paradise (or to preference)

1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
water
corn starchGrill pork chops. While the pork chops are grilling, add the garlic, onion, together in a pot and fry in olive oil until slight brown. Add spices to the pot and then add enough water to make it a bit wet. Make a cornstarch slurry and use to thicken until it because more of a sauce. Serve with the pork chops.Discussion: The recipe calls for pork loin but pork chops are cheaper and easier to cook in the woods on a grill. Cornstarch is not period; however, we had gluten-free folks for dinner so compromises were made. The grains of paradise are not required. You could try other spices like ginger or long pepper. This sauce was very well received by the diners.

Master Dagonell Collingwood, Society Deputy for Known World Symposium Advertisements

The Known World MoAS Summit will be held on Thursday (March 14th) at Gulf Wars in the al-Mahala encampment starting at 5:00 PM.
Officially the summit starts at 5:00 PM but that will coincide with most Kingdom-level courts. During the first hour or so, the Society Sciences MoAS Deputy will hold a roundtable discussion about “What counts as science versus art and where is the crossover between the two.”
Afterwards, there will be a meet-and-greet with the Society MoAS (while we wait for some other courts to finish up).
About 7:30-8:00ish, there will be a roundtable on what people would like to see in a Society MoAS Handbook.
At the same time, there will be a breakout group holding a discussion on how to incorporate early period and non-European A&S with several specialist speakers.
Other breakout groups can be held throughout the summit, especially during the meet-and-greet and some Kingdom A&S Officers may use this opportunity to touch base with their officers to see how the War has went for their Kingdom.

Making it “Reign”! Making Coins at Gulf Wars

metalworking, Moneyers Guild

At the BMDL 12th Night Celebration, TRM Gareth and Juliana granted the petition from Master Anias Fenne and Earl Byron of Haverford to create a Moneyers Guild for the Kingdom of Æthelmearc.  The Guild’s first coin (a recreation of a 1st-century Roman copper As) had already been struck and given to TRM at Their Coronation.

With the formal acceptance of the Guild, a plan for the next Royal Coin was set in motion.  The culmination of this plan was seen at this year’s Gulf Wars.  In the middle of the Æthelmearc encampment, the dies were set in a stump, and every citizen of Æthelmearc who was present at the War was encouraged to strike a coin (or two or three) for TRH.  People found time to strike coins when they were preparing dinner, relaxing in the tent, visiting from other encampments, or just passing through. There were even some Royal participants!

About 50 people joined in, striking around 300 coins.

The community of moneyers at Gulf Wars was supportive and knowledgeable.  They were elated to hear that their art was being formalized in the Sylvan Kingdom. Some of the best-known coin makers in the Known World were present and teaching at the event, providing the new Guild with much-needed guidance and advice.

Thus begins the Moneyers Guild of Æthelmearc!

Gulf Wars

As King Gareth made sure everyone in Æthelmearc knows, with His Majesty’s encouragement, a large contingent of our folks journeyed to the Kingdom of Gleann Abhann (Mississippi) to partake of the delights of Gulf Wars. Many of them have reported back, and here’s some of what they’re saying.

It’s been unusually cooooooold

Campers have endured overnight temps in the 30s and woken to frost in the morning. Baroness Kelda Jurgensdottir recounts wearing every stitch of wool she brought to sleep in at night, while THLady Pippi Ulfsdotter sported a fashionable polar fleece pajama onesie. Fortunately, day time temps have been comfortable, but many campers found it difficult to leave their sleeping bags in the mornings.

Opening ceremonies were awesome

As is traditional at Gulf Wars, the Kings and Queens rode in to Opening Ceremonies on horseback followed by their populace bearing banners. King Gareth and Queen Juliana were then heralded into the fort by Lord Christian Goldenlok.

Folks from Æthelmearc are enjoying lots of martial activities

Fencers and fighters from Æthelmearc have competed in a variety of tournaments, including the Diamond Tourney and the Rose Tourney, and been noted for their prowess and courtesy.

Countess Elena d’Artois said “Kudos to THLord Madison Morai, THLord Edward Blackthorne, called Nugg, and THLord Ardenn Scott for their display of chivalry, grace, comportment, and prowess in the Rose tourney today. Ardenn was recognized by the Roses in his round robin pool for outstanding chivalry and he advanced to the final 8.”

Roses from Æthelmearc (Countess Elena, Countess Ariella, Queen Juliana, and Countess Anna Leigh) sponsored fighters in the Rose Tourney.

A number of our heavy fighters also competed in the Viking Deed. His Majesty crafted Viking Helmets and procured chainmail for several combatants to improve their appearance especially for this battle.

Fighters also joined some of the traditional Gulf Wars battles, like the Ravine battle.

On the fencing field, Countess Elena also noted that “Don Jacob Dunmore represented Æthelmearc in the Diamond tourney. He was bested only after extended exchanges with a fierce competitor! It was a joy to watch the chess match with swords.” Countess Elena also said that Lord Mathias Al Tabai placed 3rd in the Everyman Tourney.

Her Excellency, who was our Kingdom’s Rapier Warlord for Gulf Wars, reports that Æthelmearc’s fencers also had a significant impact in the outcomes of several rapier battles.

On Thursday, Countess Elena won the Ladies’ Rapier Tourney, while Lord Niccolo Salvietti was named most courteous in the Trimaris 30-minute Bear Pit Tourney, and Team Murder Snowflake (Countess Elena, Don Jacob, Lord Niccolo, Lord Mathias, and Countess Grania of Trimaris to round out the team) took third in the Atlantian 5-man melee team tourney.

Our Siege team, including Duke Christopher Rawlins, THLady Elaine Fairchilde, Brehyres Gwendolyn the Graceful, Fuji’na Dono no Takako, and Sir Maghnus de Cnoc an Iora,  brought a ballista to Gulf Wars and participated in the Siege weapon competition as well as some battles.

The Moneyers Guild started striking coins

Earl Byron of Haverford, co-head of the Moneyers’ Guild with Master Anias Fenne, brought out some slugs and dies made by Master Anias for new coins honoring the upcoming reign of Prince Sven and Princess Siobhan. Everyone in the Kingdom camp got a chance to strike some coins.

There’s lots of food!

Once again, Mistress Illadore de Bedegrayne has coordinated meals for the Kingdom camp (in between rapier tourneys and battles) with a crew of able assistants.

Gulf Wars

From Countess Elena d’Artois:

[Thursday] morning in the Everyman tourney Mathias made it out of his round robin pool only to be taken out in the top 8 of a 40 person tourney!!

[Thursday] afternoon the rapier army of 11 from Æthelmearc had one job. Get the right-hand flag and keep it.

We. Did. Our. Job.

At the outset of the melee, Robert Hawksworth and Mathias Al Tabai set the pace ! They were the first to the flag and they slowed the opponents long enough for our main force to approach and take possession for the lion’s share of the battle. The combined forces of Trimaris, Northsheild, Meridies, Atlantia and Æthelmearc took home a decisive victory, but our worthy opponents truly made us work for it.

Acts of heroism and prowess included Mistress Illadore and Countess Elena each rolling the enemy lines at separate times to retake flags that had been lost. Count Byron of Haverford, Master Anias Fenne, and Duke Titus Germanicus used their melee expertise and leadership to solidly control the flag we were assigned. Kudos to Kara Burkhart, Don Jacob of Dunmore, Brehan Lapidario, and Lady Cairdha Eilis O’Coileain on their battlefield awareness and willingness to go wherever there was a problem, to support and hold weak points and, in many cases, turn the tide.

Our contingent was small but mighty. We worked extremely well with our friends from Trimaris.

And an especial kudos to all who fought this war point. The combat was tactically brilliant, well planned and chivalric. All were a joy to fight.

Many of the rapier army participated in the Rose tourney [Friday] morning. I do not know how all of them did. When i find put i will post a supplement.

On the rattan field our unit was asked to gain and hold a bridge until such time as help could come from the back field. Each time we united with either the Midrealm or Northshield to do just that. We did “fight in the shade” in 2 passes as we were peppered by combat archers. We were successful in our mission. Those times we did have breakouts on our bridge we beat them back successfully. Kudos especially to Sir Marek on his hero moment facing 3 enemies and besting them in the backfield. Kudos to Baroness Beatrix on her field command. Kudos to Master Anias on his spear work in the last bridge. And kudos to Sir Maghnus in the fort for taking out the enemy King with his first ballista shot!

We are small, but we are mighty. Vivant to all the combatants!!

Illadore fencer selfie

Mistress Illadore takes a selfie with some several members of the Æthelmearc rapier melee unit.

Final report from the cabin [on Saturday morning]. We have quit the field. Camp is broken down and clear. The wagon is loaded and intrepid heroes are on their various paths home.

Safe and brief travels to all. We anticipate arrival in the Debatable Lands in the wee hours of the morning not too terribly long after sunrise.

A good war. Ending with the only truly hot shower of the entire week. Simple joys.

From Baroness Beatrix Krieger:

Æthelmearc was small, mighty, and gallant in the Ravine. Recognized throughout the Known World for our cause. Well done!

Æthelmearc stood bravely in the Ravine with Clovenshield, Trimaris, Northshield, Atlantia, and [our] Allies, and faced a vast army of Calontir, Midrealm, East, Western Alliance, and their Allies, who stood to take possession of banners. The small but mighty contingent of Æthelmearc repelled our foes time and time again, and helped push the enemies back against the tides of shields, arrows, and spears. We were divided for a period to aid in two places, and we were able to stave off the mighty enemy. Though we numbered thirteen on the field, the Kingdom of Æthelmearc was recognized time and time again for melee skills, command, capability, and honor.

[On Friday] Æthelmearc fought on the bridges with our allies, the Mid and Northshield, with ferocity, helping to press the enemy and duel with our foes. We would hold off their pulses, buying time for our allies to sweep the center bridge. Our battalion was small but useful. We served our allies well, helping to acquire 3 victories to gain the point for Trimaris. The last battle, for fun, was also a victory for Trimaris.

One of the coolest moments at any SCA event, war, etc., EVER was something I got to watch [Friday] and something I had nothing to do with in any capacity. Between the bridges and the fort battles, they held a youth bridge battle. The children had an opportunity to fight two bridge battles against members of the chivalry. It was amazing. The kids stepped up without fear, and closed against the chivalry with a desire to crush the opposing forces. In both passes, the chivalry were slain to the last man, and each of the kids, varying in age, fought with courtesy, chivalry, and skill. It was a privilege to watch, it embodied the dream of the Society. Absolutely amazing.

We fought in the Fort battles, first attacking, then defending. Our numbers had dwindled somewhat, but nonetheless we fought bravely. Æthelmearc divided to aid our allies and crashed the shields in the side doors. To defend, Æthelmearc fought well, dying to the last man defending the side gates. We were not successful in taking the castle in the fastest time.

Æthelmearc: be proud of those who came on Crusade. To those who stood fiercely with our allies and served their Crowns, their kingdom, and each other with honor, be proud. You humbled and honored me.

Many have departed, including your Gulf Wars Warlord, for home. Safe drive for all, see you soon. War ends [Saturday], and the warriors of Sylvan Æthelmearc will be back to defend their homeland from invaders soon enough.

Names to remember for standing on the field: Baroness Gwen, THL Thorsol, THL Roland, Countess Elena, Sir Angus, Duke Titus, Duchess Morgen, Master Robert, Count Byron, Sir Marek, Master Anias, Sir Maghnus, Sir Koredono, Lord Random, Sir Graedwyn (in spirit), Nissan, Ben, THL Edward, and Master Jussie.

From Mistress Illadore de Bedegrayne:

[On Wednesday], we had a tragedy! The oven for pie baking had an issue due to an o-ring, so we did not have pie. We made apples in wine instead.

[Thursday] was a great day – entirely due to to Æthelmearc ‘s amazing skill and strategy, our side also won both the heavy and rapier Ravine War Point. Thursday was also steak night, with THLady Pippi in charge. We also served fettuccini with parmesan and butter, spinach salad, more snow, and finally cheese and fruit slices for dessert. Friday night was chicken in orange glaze, farfalle with green sauce (pesto), and bread pudding with berries for dessert.
