Populace in Focus – THL Eleanore Godwin

Real Name: Wanda Michaud Spencer

SCA Name & Title: THL Eleanore Godwin

Number of years in the SCA?  28 years

How did you find out about the SCA?  We went to a demo at a mall in Jamestown, New York. It was hosted by members of the Shire of Heronter.

Where did you start, what was your first event? My first event was Harvest Raid II. It was a great experience! We even experienced a wedding! We thought that was normal for every event.

What is your persona? Eleanore Godwin is a 13th century Anglo-Saxon woman who has been widowed twice.  She is an heiress in her own right, so owns property that is hers.  Edward I is on the throne and fighting a war in Scotland. Since it is expensive, he has raised taxes on us lesser nobles. I provide 5 knights, equipment, and horses to the crown. Edward was looking for more and devised a way to get more money by offering a “widow’s dispensation”. What that means is I can pay him to get a written dispensation that guarantees I cannot be forced to marry against my will. So, I run my manor, and my expenses, and most importantly, my life without interference from any man.

Why did you pick this persona?  Well, the last name is my grandmother’s maiden name and in researching it, found it is the name of a very early king of England. Earl Godwinson. The time and place came from garb I saw someone wearing and I thought “it’s a jumper I can make that!” So, I ended up 13th century Anglo-Saxon.

Do you have any group or household affiliations? I am a member of the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael, Clan Blackheart, the Tribe Tuatha Firen, and Otter’s Keep.

Tell us a little bit about your life outside the SCA… I’m getting settled in a new home, I like meeting with friends, and talking about everything!  I have a two-year-old grandson who is a busy, chatty, little smarty pants! I’m looking to have a new routine with plenty of things to do! I get to travel some, and that is fun!

What SCA activities do you, or have you participated in? Scribal arts are my first love! I have been a Thrown Weapons marshal, and a 3-time baronial Thrown Weapons Champion. I have been an archer, and target designer! I have been a teacher of many different subjects, from heraldry, scribal arts, to embroidery.

Tell us a little bit about your SCA experience (jobs, offices, duties, etc.)  I have held many different offices from chatelaine, to herald, A&S officer, group signet, demo coordinator, chancellor minor (principality). I have autocrated many events, small and large, I have taught classes small and large. I spent many hours running thrown weapons ranges and helping run events.

When you started in the SCA what goals did you have? My goals were to meet people, work at events so people could have fun, help where needed, and possibly receive recognition.

What are your goals now?  Teach scribal arts to people who are looking to start making scrolls and scribes who want to improve their skills. I want to meet new people and go to events I haven’t gone to before, or that it’s been a long time since I attended.

What was the most intimidating thing you encountered in the SCA? Speaking in front of court as herald! I was a teacher and could talk to a large class, but in court, Yikes! Not much intimidates me now, I’m a survivor of heart surgery!

After the unexpected shutdown ends, what is one thing you would like to accomplish in the SCA?  Encouraging new people to join the SCA and start having fun! Then see them time after time participating more by working at events, holding offices, and bringing their friends to join too!

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA, or if new yourself, what question would you ask?  I would say take your time getting comfortable with what we do. Make yourself familiar with how we function as a group. Do not be afraid to speak to someone you don’t know. Ask a question if there is something you want to know. Don’t try to do it all, be it all. Take your time figuring out your persona, name, and culture. You may change your mind after you “find your place” in the SCA!

If you magically woke up with an SCA talent that you do not have, what would it be? To cook an SCA feast! I know so little about medieval cooking, it would be wonderful to be able to do that!

If you had to join the SCA in another “era” (1970,1980, etc.) what “era” would you pick and why?  I might have joined in the early ’80’s.  I would have had the energy to learn to fence!

Don’t be modest, what award or honor would you like to receive above all else and why? I would like to be considered for a peerage. I think it is a way to do more to serve my kingdom in a more impactful way.

If you could pick one thing you would like to see more of in the SCA, what would it be? (and why)? I would like to see more people helping run events. It lightens everyone’s burden and gives a sense of pride to those who are getting things done for others! Seeing people have fun is a good goal!

I am also interested in interviewing couples, households, fighting units, or any other element that makes up the Kingdom. Even if you don’t live in the Kingdom anymore, but still call Aethelmearc home in your heart? We would love to hear from you too.

If you are interested in being interviewed, please contact me (information below) and I will send you a series of questions to answer. When completed return the answers to me. Please include at least three to four photos to use in the article. One should be a good profile picture. Answers with no photos will not be published.

Populace in Focus – The Sylvan Bardic Champions

27 Sunday Feb 2022

Populace in Focus today features King’s Bardic Champion Master Morien MacBain and Queen’s Bardic Champion, The Honorable Lady Maggie Rue.

Could you give a little background about how and when you started performing as part of the Bardic Arts community?

Morien: I found the SCA back in ‘86.  The very first event I went to, in what is now Ballachlagan, had a bardic circle, like pretty much all events did in those days.  Lord, they were fun!  Lots of Irish rebel music, Sci-Fi/Fantasy Con filk, dirty puns, blood, and iron stuff.  Pure joy!  The bards that had the greatest impact on me back then were Donnan the Solitary and Morgan Caer Graeme.  I learned a great deal from them and miss those performances and those songs.

Maggie Rue: In the SCA, this was really my first performance. While I have hung out around a few Bardic circles among households and groups, I generally don’t sing; it occurred to me at the onset of this competition that I may not need to. Surprise!

What types of Bardic arts performances do you enjoy doing? What is your most / least favorable type of performance?

Morien: I’m still primarily a bardic circle guy.  I like the informality of it, the lack of pressure, the faces in the firelight, the willing audience, and the “renao” (which is a wonderful Mandarin word for the noise, happy chatting, laughter, and activity of life happening that forms a backdrop to a performance).  My least favorite would have to be live bardic competitions.  You usually only get to do one piece, impostor syndrome kicks in, and my will to compete is safer if the other person is wearing armor!  If I’m going to fight to win, I want it to be with weapons, not a bit of my heart.

Maggie Rue: Not a great singer and my improv skills are more action-related than a lot of speech. So, I’d go with memorizing an old poem or writing a new one and reciting it as first and foremost. Least favorite would be improving a song. I could be wrong though—enough immersion into a subject and I might get better. We’ll see.

Have you done any type of performance arts outside of the SCA?

Morien: Sure!  I sang in the church choir for years when I was in middle and high school, which was the best vocal training I’ve had.  I did the school musical every year, plus summer theater, which were usually musicals.  I’ve sung in a few bars, once on a tiny stage where Patsy Cline sang when she was starting out.  That felt like a church.  No one threw anything. I’ve done poetry slams in clubs a couple times.  Now I am a high school English teacher, so a lot of my work is essentially storytelling to a tough audience!

Maggie Rue: Yes, indeed. I performed for a time as a character in Jesus Christ Superstar in Middletown NY for a couple of years, doing chorus parts and dancing. I’ve done a number of high school performances as well. During my years as a Game Designer, I ran the convention circuits and had to talk up game products—spiels, really—and became really good at impromptu game sessions. In addition, my parents were both members of the Philadelphia Folk Song Society and I went to a number of music Festivals in my early years… You’d be surprised as to how many SCA songs I’ve heard before in other places in different interpretations.

How much time do you spend researching bardic performances and practicing in preparation for doing a performance?

Morien: Most of my research for the last few years has been on the poetry side of my bardic practice.  I work in a wide variety of forms from different periods and cultures, so there is always more to learn! However, I don’t really practice singing enough. I have a playlist of songs I am working up and sing along with it in the car.  I have attempted to learn the hard, and suck quite badly at that.  I should learn to drum much better, so I could accompany myself on a bodhran.  I think I’ll get to work on that…

Maggie Rue: Given this was my first real SCA-based performance, I took two weeks to prepare.

What SCA events / Bardic competitions have you performed in previously and what types of performance did you do?

Morien: I’ve done bardic circles all over, and I’ve taught classes on writing poetry at SCA Fifty Year, Pennsic, AEthelmearc Academy, and Atlantia University.  I’ve done “Music in the Key of D”, a bardic contest hosted by the Chalk Man Pub at Pennsic a few times. I also sing battle hype songs with fighters while we are on our way to the battlefield at Pennsic to get our blood up.  On these former occasions, I find you seldom go wrong with Irish or Scottish rebel music, or filthy rugby songs.

Maggie Rue: This is it.

When you chose to participate in the Quest to be Sylvan Bard, did you do a type of performance that you have done before, or did you come up with a completely new performance?

Morien: I broke out two I had written before, “The Green Fields of Pennsic”, and “The Ballad of Big Bad Jehan”.  Both are staples of the campfire music I like.

Maggie Rue: So, I took a number of courses in college that were medieval in nature and “Chaucer” was one of them. The teacher insisted we learn a number of lines in Middle English, taking out his personal recordings from the library to learn the lilts and rhythms. Seventeen years later, I still hear his voice. What I performed for the competition was longer than what he had us memorize, though, so I had to go find some recordings on which to base my own performance.

How did it feel to do a performance via the online community versus doing a live performance at an event?

Morien: I loved it!  I liked that I got to strike and vanish like Zorro and could just focus on what I was doing.  The competitive side with all its nasty thoughts and lust to win did not make an appearance!

Maggie Rue: It was actually pretty comfortable.

Did you face any challenges with performing in the sylvan bard competition?

Morien: Yep!  I am a goofball at tech, and my performance of “Big Bad Jehan” kept turning out badly because I didn’t understand how to make my phone work, so I wound up just sending in “Green Fields of Pennsic” by itself.

Maggie Rue: None

Being one of the sylvan bards within the kingdom, can you share your plans / ideas for keeping the bardic arts alive in the kingdom during your tenure?

Morien: Heck yeah!  We are looking at maintaining the practice of monthly online bardic hangouts on the first Tuesday of each month of the year starting at 8 in the evenings.  Rue will be handling the tech, rest assured, although I will try to learn it as well.  We’re also looking at starting a sort of “Bardic Boot Camp”, an ongoing series of classes (both online and in person) on subjects like vocal training, storytelling, playing instruments, poetic composition, and so on.  We’ve already started reaching out to teachers from across the kingdom and the known world, and people seem enthusiastic!  Also, I plan to start a FB group that should be an ongoing poetry writing workshop combined with a book study circle on various forms and skills from beginner to advanced.  I’m working up a syllabus for it, and reaching out to established poets to participate, although the focus will be on bringing new aspiring poets into the field.  So, COVID or not, we’ll be helping people along!  We will also be working to ensure that live bardic circles and performances happen at in-person events, never fear!

Maggie Rue: So, there’s been talk of having a Novice Day like the one they had in the East Kingdom, which I attended, and one of the biggest beefs was that there was no Novice Bardic competition. So, we’re changing that. In addition, I’m going to incorporate Bardic Arts in my other A&S specialties, researching and performing songs that would also be of interest to the Herbal and Apothecary Guild as well as the Assassins’ Guild. Master Morien and I will continue the Bardic Competitions and we’ve got plans to get the Bardic Arts everywhere.

What advice would you give to other populace who would like to pursue the quest to be involved in bardic arts and perform in bardic arts competitions?

Morien: Come join us for the First Tuesday Onlines! Join in!  If you aren’t ready, just listen for a while, and then pipe in!  Join the FB groups for “AEthelmearc College of Bards”, “SCA Bardic Arts”, “AEthelmearc Arts & Sciences”, and the FB group for “Bardic Boot Camp” and “AEthelmearc Poetry Workshop”, once I get them running!  Perform anywhere you can. Make a playlist of songs you want to learn and sing along with them in the car at high volume!  Do NOT worry about what you sound or look like.  Don’t listen to the haters.  Read, listen, and watch good performances not just as an audience, but as a crafter, see what they are doing, and how they are doing it. Remember that you can learn as much from a bad performance as from a good one.  A poet is one on whom NOTHING is wasted.  I have a FAT list of books for you to get into if you like!  LET’S DO THIS!!

More advice!  Remember, your performance begins from the moment you are called, and doesn’t end until you are off the stage.  Entrances and exits matter!  Also, when in doubt, pretend to be slightly drunk, or more drunk than you in fact are.  People like a drunken bard, and if you mess up, they will forgive you and enjoy it.  Schadenfreude!

Oh, and one more piece of advice:  When composing, even if you aren’t working in a purely alliterative form like Anglos-Saxon or 14th-century Alliterative Revival or something, get that alliteration in there.  It’s like salt in cooking.  People may not notice it, but they WILL like it!

Maggie Rue: Just do it. Get involved with everything sooner or later. I have been on a tear these past few years of just reaching out and getting involved. Look where it landed me. I don’t care if all you know are nursery rhymes: give it a try. Can’t sing? Me, neither. Let’s go learn stuff together.

Populace in Focus – Master Konner MacPherson + THL Caera Fitzpatrick

13 Sunday Feb 2022

Posted by aethgazette in Interviews, Populace-in-focus

SCA Names & titles:

Konner & Caera (pronounced KEER-uh). If you must, we are technically Master Konner MacPherson & The Honorable Lady Caera Fitzpatrick

Years in the SCA:

Konner: On & off since 1987

Caera: Since 2010

How did you each find out about the SCA?

Konner: Chasing a girl

Caera: I was down a rabbit hole looking for Renn Faires. Pennsic was on someone’s list

Where did you each start, what was your first event?

Konner: First meeting was the dissolution of the Canton of Dragonfly Ridge. First event was Mudthaw (East).

Caera: Pennsic 39. It’s also when Konner and I met.

What are your personas?

Konner: 14th C. Scot

Caera: Celt, kindaaaa 9th Century-ish. I bounce around from the late Iron Age through the Normans. Yeah, really defined, I know

Why did you pick these personas?

Konner: It’s just what appealed to me at the time.

Caera: I have an affinity for Ireland and since my tailoring skills are minimal, I figured earlier was better (knowing nothing of garment construction).

Do you have any group or household affiliations?

Konner: Formerly House Von Holstern and House Full Circle. Founding member of the East’s 404 Fighting Unit. I was squire first to Sir Magnus Bloodaxe and later to my former squire-brother Sir Tanaka Raiko

Caera: I am apprenticed to Padrona Caterina Giaocchini and have taken the field with the 404-fighting unit

Tell us a little bit about your lives outside the SCA.

We are from the East (New Jersey) and have recently moved to the Barony of Delftwood to be near Caera’s family. She grew up in the area. We have a toddler and an infant that keep us busy. Each of us have more hobbies than is necessary. Caera’s tend to be yarn-related though calligraphy and illumination snuck in there somehow. Konner likes making all sorts of things.

What SCA activities do you or have you each participated in?

We were both heavy fighters, have helped run loads of events in varying capacities and held Shire offices. Konner has also been teaching heavy fighting for years and Caera has been part of the A&S community.

When you each started in the SCA what goals did you have?

Konner: I was in my late teens, so Fighting, Feasting, and F…..un.

Caera: No real goals, just looking for something fun to do with my friends.

What are goals that both of you have now?

We don’t have any particular goals, just looking to keep enjoying the experience

What was the most intimidating thing either of you has encountered in the SCA?

Konner: Autocratting my first event; I was told it would be a nice small one. It was K&Q Rattan Champs.

Caera: When I first started, I was overly worried about accidentally not following proper protocol around anyone with a crown/coronet.

After the unexpected shutdown ends, what is one thing you both would like to accomplish in the SCA?

Introduce the boys to the SCA. It will be a totally new experience going to events with kids in tow. Our oldest went to two events by the time he was 3 months old, but then that was it, we’ve been in shutdown since.

As a couple what is the most challenging aspect of the SCA; likewise, what is most enjoyable?

Because of our involvement in the running of events, the answer to both questions have been, spending time with each other!

Having recently moved from another Kingdom, what challenges did you face (if any) integrating into the SCA in another area or can you share some background about your involvement in the other Kingdom?

Konner: I’ve got a group of old-school SCAdian friends and it’s challenging because they aren’t local now.

Caera: It’s been interesting but strange to re-learn “basic” things like what the big events are, Order names & heraldry, names & locations of Shires and Baronies, etc.

If you could each accomplish only one thing in the SCA in the next year, what would it be?

Konner: It would be nice just to get back to events.

Caera: I’d like to continue getting to know people in the Kingdom and… yeah, going to an event with all 4 of us would really be awesome. Fingers crossed.

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA, or if new yourself what question would you ask and who would you ask it of?

Konner: Don’t let stuff get in the way of you having fun

Caera: You got to find your fun, what you find interesting and entertaining and engaging. If you don’t know where to start, that’s OK too. Open invite to contact me and I’ll do my best to help.

What motivates both of you to continue to be involved in the SCA, especially during times when it might be tough to do so?

Konner: After 30 years in the SCA, it’s really where my main social life is.

Caera: The amount of knowledge and talent stored in the Society is truly amazing. I get to geek out about the things I am passionate about (Textile arts) and pick up new amusements along the way… C & I’m looking at you.

If either of you magically woke up with an SCA talent you do not already have, what would it be?

Konner: Making really good garb.

Caera: Oh, GOOD one! Yeah, we can both make passable garb, but oh I’d love to make really nice stuff.

If either you had to join the SCA in another “era” (1970, 1980, etc.), what “era” would you pick and why?

Konner: The 70’s because I like beginnings.

Caera: If I HAD to pick a different era, I’d say late 80s. I loved nerdy, medievalesque things like Labyrinth and The Princess Bride. It would have been fun to really play with that when they were coming out.

Don’t be modest, what award or honor would you like to receive above all else and why?

Konner: Maybe a Court Baroncy. I like hats.

Caera: A Laurel would be a delightful token of recognition

Are you concerned that moving to a different area will set back your SCA careers?

Konner: Achievement unlocked; I’m not really chasing anything.

Caera: Recognition is extremely gratifying but my fun is largely teaching and geeking out about textiles. Moving has given me a wider scope in that regard!

If you could each pick one thing you would like to see more of in the SCA, what would it be?

Caera: I hope the virtual events don’t disappear entirely when the world “normalizes”. I’ve been able to attend virtual scholas and witness Courts I would have otherwise missed due to logistics.

Konner: Yeah, I agree with that.

Why we have our honorifics: Konner is a Pelican.

Caera is in the Order of the Maunche which is the East’s equivalent of a Fleur.

Populace in Focus – Lord Cassiano da Castello

06 Sunday Feb 2022

Posted by aethgazette in Interviews, Populace-in-focus

Real Name:  Cas Zemba

SCA Name & title: Lord Cassiano da Castello

Years in the SCA: 3 years

How did you find out about the SCA? I first heard about the SCA through friends, Lady Magdalena de Txoperena, and THL Fede di Fiore. They introduced me to the local shire, Nithgaard, and it went from there.

Where did you start, what was your first event? The Shire of Nithgaard is home, and my first event was Beer Bacon Bash in….2018? Yes. That sounds right!

What is your persona? My persona and registered name began as 16th Century Italian because it was what my girlfriend (now wife) wore, and I wanted to match her as a couple. It was also what she offered to make for me for my first event, and I believed that beggars should not be choosers when handed free garb made by hand. I have since gravitated more towards Late Period Polish out of a preference for long coats and the silhouette, as well as needing some more cold-weather appropriate garb. I still wear Italian occasionally, but it is secondary.

Why did you pick this persona? I admit, I was given a very strong sell on Late Period clothing in general by Fede and Co. as that is their preferences. I was also drawn to the richness of the colors in brocades, which match my preferences for modern men’s fashion as well. Italian is fine, but I admit fully to being thoroughly intimidated by wearing codpieces. Another close friend, Lord Keistutus Prus-Andrzejewski, has worn Polish for most of his decades-long SCA career and slowly drew me towards the non-codpiece menswear. I found it aligned more with my personal comfort in garb, and also gave me a bunch of big ol’ coats of pretty brocade and velvet to be flashy in.

Do you have any group or household affiliations? Only my local shire at the time, Nithgaard.

Tell us a little bit about your life outside the SCA. Outside of the SCA, I work for Penn State as a research administrator, a new change in job from being a archaeologist for public contract. I am the proud farmer of a mess of Silver Fox rabbits, two house panthers, and two kitchen wolves.

What SCA activities do you or have you participated in? A little bit of everything, but in particular I fence, and am active as an archer; I occasionally do scribal / calligraphy arts, fur sewing, and am a routine retainer for various reigns. I am perhaps best known for recreating a Polish honey liquor called Krupnik, and for researching topics for SCA A&S. I have recently begun inkle weaving and am enjoying it.

Tell us a little bit about your SCA experience (jobs, offices, duties, etc.) As mentioned above, I have been a routine retainer for several reigns. I served as a Queen’s Guard during the Long Reign of Maynard and Liadain and am currently Deputy Seneschal for the Shire of Nithgaard.

When you started in the SCA what goals did you have? To not be overwhelmed or let the garb wear me! I was very intimidated at my first events and found that to be less anxious, I needed to be doing something. By my third event I was entering my first A&S competitions and restarting my interest in archery (I had shot competitively as a kid) out of sheerly needing something to talk about other than to tell folks that I was not recently moved from another kingdom (Fede’s garb will make anyone look like an SCA veteran).

What are your goals now? I am working to be more active in the behind-the-scenes running of the SCA, and truth be told, just keeping the dream alive. The pandemic has been all sticks and no carrots for even the most dedicated of us and maintaining consistent participation in the eSCA has been a real push of mine. I am lucky that the eSCA allows me to teach more easily, but alas has sincerely affected my ability to offer tastings. I have been looking for new projects and starting a few, trying to diversify my passions to keep my own interest sparking.

What was the most intimidating thing you encountered in the SCA? Oh man, y’all are so pretty when done up to the nines in courts or Twelfth Night. I don’t think I’ve ever been so starstruck or tongue-tied than my first few events just trying to say something other than complimentary gibberish. I think I had a drink in hand every event just to get my nerve up to talk to people.

After the unexpected shutdown ends, what is one thing you would like to accomplish in the SCA? Now that I have a new job that doesn’t require as much travel, I would like to be more active in consistent archery and fencing. One of my first fencing competitions was QRC in 2019, and I’ve improved since. I would like to keep fighting people and getting better.

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA, or if new yourself what question would you ask and who would you ask it of? Jump in two feet first. This is one of the most immersion-friendly hobbies I’ve ever been a part of, and while it can be daunting to pick something to start with, it really is the best way to start meeting people and start talking. This hobby allowed me to restart hobbies and passions that I had to set aside in my teens to focus on sports and college. It has been a joy to rediscover them, and I do believe that there is a wonder in every SCA activity that make’s everyone’s inner child fill with glee. And just like that inner kid, don’t be afraid to learn something new and not be good at it. You will get good. Promise.

If you magically woke up with an SCA talent you do not already have, what would it be? Bardic, song. I have a modest voice at best, and stage fright with the worst of them. I am constantly thrilled by our bardic community.

If you had to join the SCA in another “era” (1970, 1980, etc.), what “era” would you pick and why? Gotta go with Norman Sicily under Roger II. Intersection learning from the Arabic, Byzantine and Western spheres, plus a luscious and thriving Southern Italian / Norman-Sicilian culture. The architecture?!?  *chef’s kiss*

Don’t be modest, what award or honor would you like to receive above all else and why? I am trying to steadily work towards my Fleur. In an odd way, the Grant level arts awards feel like working towards my master’s. I was never able to complete that degree, but achieving a Fleur feels like it would lay some of the ghosts of that messy time to rest. Also, I love the heraldry of the Fleur award. Good Job Æthelmearc, that’s a sexy GOA.

If you could pick one thing you would like to see more of in the SCA, what would it be? Right now? More people. But failing that, I would be happy to see more social events in the future. I know that times make it so that events sometimes have to pull double / triple duty, but I have yet to get to Nithgaard’s Evening of Fine Dining and Dance, and it’s on my bucket list.

Populace in Focus – Lady Rannveig Hraejshvelgsneys Alfvinsdottir

30 Sunday Jan 2022

Posted by aethgazette in Interviews, Populace-in-focus

Real Name: Renee Schmutz-Sowards

SCA Name & title: Lady Rannveig “Hraejshvelgsneys” Alfvinsdottir

Years in the SCA: Active since 1996 / Anno societatis 30, so…wow…26 years now!

How did you find out about the SCA?

When I was 13, I went for a bike ride to the park one morning and never came home. The local SCA group was having a demo in the park that day, and I was completely enthralled. My Mom recounts that when she tracked me down, she found me happily munching away on Lady Granias almond and rose water cookies while peppering the Joseph the Blacksmith with about a million questions. I was a rather indifferent history student, so when my parents saw me excited about something educational *and* history related, they were pretty much all for it!

Where did you start, what was your first event?

I started out with the Canton of Glenn Iaurinn in the Mid-Realm. Sadly, I don’t remember what the name of my first event was. However, I recall the actual event itself vividly. It was at an old church camp, down some holler. Just a small day event, but it seemed magical to me! The pomp and circumstance of court, the clothes, the fighting, the people! One of the biggest “Wow!” moments of the day was being invited to meet Rurik and Elspeth, the (then) Prince and Princess of Æthelmearc. (I was very awed!) The other highlight was wandering out to watch the archery and immediately being taught how to shoot a bow by Lord Brad (aka THL Brada AEthelwald)! Archery continues to be a big part of my life, and I fully credit Lord Brad for getting me started that very first event! (Now, for added fun, consider; this was my first event. My second event was…Pennsic!)

What is your persona? Technically Viking, BUT…

Why did you pick this persona?

I picked my name and persona when I was 14 years old, exclusively because Viking girls could wear pants. I was solidly in my “grunge/hacker” phase and couldn’t fathom the idea of wearing long heavy skirts, let alone bodices or corsets! However, it wasn’t too long before I was lent an Italian Renaissance gown to try out, and from that moment on I was all about that pretty-princess-dress life! I don’t think I wore pants to an SCA event for years after that!

Around that same time, I started sewing and really found my passion in studying and recreating the multitude of historical garments that fall within our time period. So, while I identify as Viking, you are just as likely to find me in anything from pharaonic Egyptian garb to late Italian court gowns, to men’s Elizabethan, to Ottoman or Mongol. My dream is to have one perfectly period head to toe outfit for every time period and culture that catches my interest!

Do you have any group or household affiliations?

Essentially growing up in the SCA, I’ve wandered my way through a double handful of groups and households over the years. (Including at least one *semi*-respectable pirate ship? To be honest, that was during my college-aged years, there was pan juice, and it’s all bit hazy now ;)) I eventually settled down with the Barony of Blackstone Mountain and as a part of Sir Alonzio’s house, the Peacemakers.

Tell us a little bit about your life outside the SCA.

Well, I married one of my house brothers (much to Sir Alonzio’s early consternation! lol). THL Hrafn Inn Trausti (AKA James) and I are nearing 16 years married, and we have one kiddo who has been so steeped in the SCA since day one that they still get a little confused that not everyone’s family does medieval stuff as part of their regular lives. Out in the real world, I am an Information Specialist at my local library, moving a few years ago into our Genealogy Department. It’s been a learning curve…all the history here is so darn RECENT!

The sewing skills I’ve learned, courtesy of the SCA, have played a big role in my life outside the Society. I ran my own small alterations business for several years, although I eventually stepped away because it was getting a little *too* successful and not leaving me time for much else. I am now quite happy to have the freedom to sew at a leisurely pace, and to work with brightly colored linens and brocades again, and not white bridal satin!

What SCA activities do you or have you participated in?

My biggest “thing”, and what I am probably most known for, is sewing. I’ve often joked that I am mostly here for the clothes! I also love embroidery and have recently started carving stamps and block printing fabrics, which I find slightly addictive!

Archery has been a constant theme in my SCA life. Starting day one/event one with target archery and later historic crossbows (back in Ye-Goode-Olde-Days I was a part of the crossbow conspiracy! #IYKYK).

A few years ago, I decided, somewhat on a lark, to give combat archery a try. I figured it would be a one and done thing to mark off my bucket list. However, much to my continued surprise, I love it! I am even now eagerly awaiting the day I can work my way to the front lines of the next big bridge battle!

Cooking is a big joy I get in the SCA. I cooked my first lunch at a small event in Mid-Realm when I was 15, and since then I’ve feast-o-crated or been part of kitchen staff on a semi regular basis. My Dad and I shared a love for weird foods and experimental recipes, and I’m not sure you can find a better outlet for that sort of thing than an SCA feast! A few years back I tried to count up all the feasts and events I’ve cooked for out of curiosity, and it was around 20. Certainly not as many as some of our Kingdoms truly great cooks, but I am still rather proud of that! I spent a lot of time in my teens and twenty’s serving feasts and water-bearing. Both are things I still really enjoy when I get the chance, although these days I am more often in the kitchen or in the battle.

I was also proud blood-sucking-merchant-scum for a few years back in the day (despite Fredrick the Balds despairing over my haggling skills). In fact, I still see garb or accessories I sold out and in use occasionally at larger events!

Tell us a little bit about your SCA experience (jobs, offices, duties, etc.)

I’ve never held an official office in the SCA, but not because I’m un-willing. It’s simply worked out that because of either my age when I was in Mid-Realm, or citizenship status once I came to Æthelmearc, that I’m not able to hold most offices. (I was declared a citizen of the Most Glorious Kingdom of Æthelmearc in 2003 originally, and then re-declared just a few years ago, but alas have lived just outside her borders for most my life.)

I have, regardless, always tried to be an active and helpful member of my local groups. I have been on staff in some capacity for nearly every Blackstone Raids since 2001, as well as many other smaller events over the years.

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to be part of a team of seamstresses who worked on a historically accurate suite of clothes for Their Majesties, Gareth and Juliana. That was such a fun experience! It was really neat getting to be a part of something at a Kingdom level and to work alongside such talented and knowledgeable artisans and seamstresses!

When you started in the SCA what goals did you have? Oh gosh…what were 14-year-old Rannveig’s goals? Probably “Do all the things!”

What are your goals now?

Hmmm.…About the same! Part of the SCA that I have always loved is the encouragement and invitation to try your hand at all sorts of different things. Because of the Society I’ve been able to try blacksmithing, armoring, glass work, carving, woodwork, weaving, archery, as well as so many other things that most likely I would never have had the chance to experience if it wasn’t for people in the SCA saying “Hey, you want to try this? Let me show you how.”

In that same vein, I think another goal is to BE one of those individuals welcoming people to come try things. I really enjoy the opportunities I’ve had over the years to help people learn to sew and get more confident in their abilities to pattern and create clothes that they love and feel-good in. I’d really like to find ways to do more of that.

What was the most intimidating thing you encountered in the SCA?

Court etiquette, no doubt! All the bowing, and the titles, and those big shiny hats! I recall one early event being introduced to a local notable and just completely freezing up. No words came out of my mouth at all! I was mortified! Someone once told me “If you see a shiny hat, you have to bow or curtsy” …well, for a long time I mastered the art of never seeing a shiny hat, for fear I’d somehow mess up! I could dodge royalty like it was my job! I still feel like I’m bumbling my way along most the time. However, I have learned that a semi-decent curtsy, a pleasant smile, and a clever herald to do the talking for you will carry you through quite a few situations!

After the unexpected shutdown ends, what is one thing you would like to accomplish in the SCA?

Just one thing??? I thought we established the goal was ALL the things! Ok, fine. Hmm..one thing. Well, I’d love to be War Queen. (Hrafn…*nudge nudge, wink wink, hint hint* J) Barring that, I think teaching more. Finding ways to do more hands on and in person, “Let’s make a thing” style teaching. We used to have semi-regular sewing retreats down our end of the Kingdom, and I rarely worked on my own stuff because I’d spend the whole weekend helping others with their projects, and I loved it. I’d like to find ways to have that again.

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA.

I would tell someone new that it’s easy to get overwhelmed, even if you love every minute of it, and that they shouldn’t feel rushed or obligated to do or be everything right now. The Society can be gloriously overwhelming. Even more so these days with all the inter-webs and the social medias. I’d tell them to feel free to do as much, *or as little* as they feel like. That’s a great thing with the SCA, you aren’t expected to be perfect in every aspect, or any aspect, right off the bat. Or ever. Dabbling here and there is fine. Show up, wear a tunic, have fun. If you find something that fascinates you and you enjoy, awesome! But take your time, enjoy the journey, and don’t feel rushed.

If you magically woke up with an SCA talent you do not already have, what would it be?

Dancing and musical skills. Don’t get me wrong, I love court dancing, and will enthusiastically participate. But I am not what one would call graceful on the dance floor. Alas, I have zero natural rhythm. I’ve even managed to ‘vivat’ off beat during court.

If you had to join the SCA in another “era” (1970, 1980, etc.), what “era” would you pick and why?

Honestly? None. I think I’m very lucky to have experienced the SCA in the mid-90’s/early 00’s. There was a real blossoming of the quality and ability to lean into the educational and historical aspects of the SCA, while still having a good dollop of the freewheeling creativeness that was an integral part of the Society’s earliest days. We now have so many amazing resources and avenues of research, plus an almost unprecedented access to knowledge that didn’t exist for most people before. And the works that our members are creating, and the depths of study they are reaching, and sharing are mind-blowing.

However, and this is purely my own mental block and not because of anyone else, I often find myself paralyzed by indecision because so many resources are out there and accessible now. I find it can feel like our collective standards and expectations have risen to the point where I almost feel beholden to make every project a “big in-depth” project. I find I worry that if it’s not 100% researched and documentable, is it still worth making? And often I really miss the freedom of making cool things that look the part and bring me joy.

(Side rant: Ya know…back in my day the whole of the internet could be printed, yes printed, in one book called the Internet Yellow Pages, and the historic costuming section took up two lines. TWO. These days you do one google search and you have access to whole museum collections of primary sources! Kids these days have no idea how good they have it!)

Don’t be modest, what award or honor would you like to receive above all else and why?

The Golden Mirror. I feel that often times it’s the people around us at events that really sell that feeling of being in another time, and I love historic fashions and all the details that go into making what was a costume become “just clothes”. Being honored with the Golden Mirror would mean that I had, in some small way, helped others experience that magic feeling of being in different place and time, even if just for a moment. That would be a pretty amazing thing.

If you could pick one thing you would like to see more of in the SCA, what would it be?

Equestrian! I know there are places in the Known World where it’s really common, but despite the fact that I am a born and bred Kentucky girl, I’ve never been around horses. I got to visit with the horses and watch SCA jousting for the first time a few years ago at War of the Wings, and oh my gosh it was just the Coolest Thing Ever! More war-horses!

Populace in Focus – Eferiia Lisitsinova

23 Sunday Jan 2022

Posted by aethgazette in Interviews, Populace-in-focus

SCA Name & title: Eferiia Lisitsinova

Years in the SCA: 3 as of this year!

How did you find out about the SCA? I found out about the SCA through my significant other

Where did you start, what was your first event? My first taste of the SCA was through my first event, being Bears Event in 2020.

What is your persona? My persona is based around a somewhat wealthy 13th century Russian woman.

Why did you pick this persona? I picked my persona because of the large amount of Russian blood in my family, and I also absolutely adore the clothing worn, and I like to research the culture and life of the time.

Do you have any group or household affiliations? I am affiliated with the Shire of Hunters Home.

Tell us a little bit about your life outside the SCA. In my life outside of the SCA I spend as much time as possible studying nature around me, discovering the everyday uses for the everyday weeds, roots, flowers, fungi, and berries. I enjoy traditional arts such as oil painting and drawing, as well as digital art and graphic design. I also teach myself how to cook and bake, and love dishing out my new creations with friends and family.

What SCA activities do you or have you participated in? I like to participate in Arts & Sciences activities when possible.

Tell us a little bit about your SCA experience (jobs, offices, duties, etc.) My experience in the SCA is unfortunately very limited due to the pandemic, but I always try to reach out and help in any way, like helping with feasts, troll, and setting up tents. All of my peers are so willing to help me go after my dreams within the SCA and it makes me feel very much at home.

When you started in the SCA what goals did you have? My goals when I first started were all over the place… So out of sheer wonder I wanted to get into every single thing possible!

What are your goals now? My goals now are to really hone in on learning and creating scribal arts and go somewhere really far with it 🙂

What was the most intimidating thing you encountered in the SCA? The most intimidating thing I have encountered (especially as someone very new to the SCA) is the pressure of excellence and the need to be completely historically accurate in the eyes of others. At the end of the day, I want to be the kind of person to guide others in their creative journey rather than make them feel unwelcomed into any aspect of the SCA.

After the unexpected shutdown ends, what is one thing you would like to accomplish in the SCA? After the shutdown, I would love to meet everyone that I may not have been able to before because of the shutdown. Most of all, something I wish to accomplish would be creating new things with tips that I may learn from other scribes or artisans in the SCA, and making strong connections that will last because of it 🙂

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA, or if new yourself what question would you ask and who would you ask it of? A question I would love to ask would be “how do you keep yourself going, even when it seems really hard to?”. I see so many people constantly creating, but for me and anyone else that struggles with motivation and/or burnout, this question is always in the back of my mind.

If you magically woke up with an SCA talent you do not already have, what would it be? It would definitely have to be non-percussion musical instruments. I am a musical person, but mastering woodwinds and string instruments has always been difficult. Hearing people play flutes, recorders, lutes, dulcimers, etc. always makes me feel so happy.

If you had to join the SCA in another “era” (1970, 1980, etc.), what “era” would you pick and why? I haven’t been on this earth super long, but I would choose around when the SCA first started so I could watch it evolve and grow over time.

Don’t be modest, what award or honor would you like to receive above all else and why? One day maybe far, far away it would be wonderful if I could work my way toward Laurel.

If you could pick one thing you would like to see more of in the SCA, what would it be? I would love to see dancing and botany related things, I think it would be really cool to watch, learn, and participate in.

Populace in Focus – Lady Isolda de Leycestre

16 Sunday Jan 2022

Posted by aethgazette in Interviews, Populace-in-focus

SCA Name & title: Lady Isolda de Leycestre

Years in the SCA: About 5 years total, separated by 2 Kingdoms with a 2O year hiatus in-between.  I came back into the SCA in Æthelmearc in the spring of 2019.

How did you find out about the SCA? 20 years ago, my Ex-husband introduced me to the SCA.

Where did you start, what was your first event? I got my first start in the SCA in 2000, the Kingdom of Atlantia at an event called Garb Wars.

What is your persona? My persona is based as a 14th Century Lady and wealthy wool merchant because it’s my love of spinning wool that got me back into the SCA.

Why did you pick this persona? Mostly the garb out of 14th century illuminations fascinates me!

Do you have any group or household affiliations? I belong to The Dutchy of Arindale and I have recently been apprenticed to Master Hrólfr Á Fjárfelli.

Tell us a little bit about your life outside the SCA: Outside of the SCA, I run a small fresh cut Dahlia Farm during the growing season, I love making people smile when they get one of my bouquets.  I also have a monarch butterfly sanctuary with a large walk-in caterpillar raising cage.  My peak monarch hatching season is mid-July and all of August.  The thrill of raising and releasing monarchs every year never gets old!

What SCA activities do you or have you participated in? I’ve mostly been doing A&S activities, that seems to me my niche.

Tell us a little bit about your SCA experience (jobs, offices, duties, etc.) I think my experiences have been great and allow me growth within the SCA.  I’m in a fantastic Household that’s very supportive of what I do and the path I’m on to better myself. I’ve also met a lot of great people in Æthelmearc that make the experience of events that much more joyful and meaningful.

When you started in the SCA what goals did you have? I honestly did not have any goals other than to attend events and have fun!  That’s what it’s all about at the end of the day.

What are your goals now? My goal now is to work towards my Laurel and I hope that I can bring as many people with me as I can.

What was the most intimidating thing you encountered in the SCA?

Not doing something good enough or being period correct enough for some people’s liking. That can have a very negative impact on people, especially if new to the SCA.  But I have been fortunate enough to be in a great circle of friends to make those negatives turned into positives.

After the unexpected shutdown ends, what is one thing you would like to accomplish in the SCA?

My first event I attended after the shutdown I had brought a bucket of flowers for the Queen at the time, and photographer snapped a picture of me with the Queen while I was still dressed in a not so nice looking tunic I wear for pavilion set up. That photo made it into the Æthelmearc news and I was mortified at how I looked!  I know it’s me and a personal thing, but it really bothered me knowing that I could have done better before seeing the Queen.  So, since then I started on a path to make my 14th Century kit of a Lady period correct!  I’ve spent this past summer working on that with sewing and acquiring items that my persona would have had.  The interesting thing about me wanting to be a better person and about my garb being period correct, it has also sparked that into life with other people around me, that’s kinda cool!  I would love to see that continue to spread and people take more interest into period correct garb for their persona. I’ve been helping quite a few folks with making garb to make their kits better. I also started a blog and Facebook page about my garb making adventures called Isolda’s Medieval Wardrobe for people to follow along.  So yeah, I’d like to see that joy and pride spread within the Kingdom.

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA, or if new yourself what question would you ask and who would you ask it of? My advice to someone new in the SCA would be to make sure you are having fun! Find out what your passion is within the SCA and go for it! And don’t be afraid to ask questions!  There are so many great people in the Kingdom that are always willing to help steer you in the right direction.

If you magically woke up with an SCA talent you do not already have, what would it be? Illuminations!! I cannot draw a stick figure to save my soul! I really admire the work and artistry and the craftsmanship that goes into making the scrolls for awards!  That’s some serious talent!

If you had to join the SCA in another “era” (1970, 1980, etc.), what “era” would you pick and why? Gosh, I don’t know if I have an era I would want to join the SCA in. I was too young for the 70′ and 80’s.  Maybe the 90’s when I was in my 20’s and had more energy to do archery and fencing.

Don’t be modest, what award or honor would you like to receive above all else and why? My Laurel. I want to know if I truly got what it takes to go through all the ups and downs, the good times and the hell.  My husband will be the first one to tell you that I do not aggravate well, lol!  I know a lot of what I will need to learn on this path is patience!

If you could pick one thing you would like to see more of in the SCA, what would it be? Dancing! I have not seen any of that since I started in 2019.  It’s also something I would like to learn.

Populace in Focus – Baroness Amalie Reinhardt

SCA Name & title: Baroness Amalie Reinhardt, OP

Years in the SCA: 14

How did you find out about the SCA? When I was in college at the University at Buffalo, I had a friends in my co-ed service fraternity (both local and scattered throughout Æ and the East) and Baron Fergus, a friend of my housemates. While in grad school, the Hael’s fight practice was a few floors down from my office on campus (as a computer lab supervisor), and I’d hang out and watch the fighters & fencers. Yet, I did not play at the time nor became a member of the SCA because of my heavy involvement in Alpha Phi Omega.

Where did you start, what was your first event? My official start in SCA was in 2007, when I moved to a very rural part of Coppertree for a teaching job. I knew practically no one in the area, my involvement with APO was winding down after being a section chair for 5 years, and I needed something to do. As SCA had been an long-time, back-burner interest, it was time to check it out. I would travel to Coppertree to watch the fighters at practice and have some social time. Before leaving the Shire, A&s nights had restarted, too.

When I returned to Syracuse, I sought out the Barony and started attending their weekly A&S meetings. The first Æ event I attended was an Æthelmearc Æcademy in Coppertree in the summer of 2008. I was only there for 1/2 the day. I remember taking a kennings class from Master Fridrikr and a bardic sharing class from Sir Haakon. There was a quiet moment before leaving when I saw a monarch butterfly flutter across a grassy field between buildings, which was the impetus for my poem “Butterfly on the Battlefield” —written 2 days later while proctoring a Regents exam.

What is your persona? My persona is Sinti, circa 1350-1400 in Southwestern Germany.

Why did you pick this persona? Partially honoring some family stories, I remember growing up and partially because nomadic people could pick up customs and culture from the areas in which they traveled/settled.

Do you have any group or household affiliations? I am currently the landed Baroness for the Barony of Delftwood. I was a member of a household for a few years, which disbanded in 2014. Now, my SCA family is Master Alaxandair and Mistress Maria — my SCA parents — and all of my siblings, aunts, uncles, and all the other strange combinations of our awesomely tangled family web.

Tell us a little bit about your life outside the SCA. In everyday life, I help teachers with educational technologies in their schools and classrooms. I also am a merit badge counselor for Scouts BSA and was an advisor for APO at SUNY Oswego prior to COVID. Oh, and of course, I spend time playing games and watching movies with Ixac and spend lots of cuddle time with Elmo and Jupiter!

What SCA activities do you or have you participated in? Arts & Sciences, including some fiber arts (kumihimo & inkle weaving), copper enameling, bardic arts, and calligraphy & illumination. Marshal Activities, including thrown weapons and archery. Webministry. (more below) Heraldic arts – helping others with name and device submissions.

Tell us a little bit about your SCA experience (jobs, offices, duties, etc.)

At the Baronial level, I am currently Delftwood’s Baroness, and have been a former webminister, Minister of the Lists, unofficial scribe (taking minutes for 7+ years), did an extremely brief stint as Chronicler.

At Kingdom level, I am currently the Historian and was the Kingdom Webminister for 5 years.

I am also the current webminister for Their Royal Highnesses Byron & Ariella, the Historian (as it’s easy to be one’s own webminister 🙂), the Kingdom Earl Marshal, the Kingdom Thrown Weapons Marshal, the Kingdom Chatelaine,  ÆLeads, the Kingdom’s Moneyers Guild, and Blackstone Raid. In the past I also have been webminister for the Kingdom webminister’s Office (again, it’s easy to one’s own webminister!), Kingdom Arts & Sciences, TRMs Tindal and Etain, and Blackstone Mountain.

So, as Kingdom Historian, I am currently working on a few different projects. One is creating a Book of Lists, which with the help of Baroness Antoinette and Lady Genevieve, we are working on creating officer lists dating back to the beginning of Æthelmearc. Another major project will be updating the Kingdom’s history paper, so it is brought to the current time. It currently ends in AS LI (2016). (If anyone has anything they wish to be included, please send me an email!)

As Kingdom webminister, I did many things, including keeping the site up-to-date. Under my tenure, the site was revamped, moved twice, kept the email forwarders in order, received officer reports and in-turn sent reports to the Society webminister, created the icon system for the Kingdom Events Calendar with THN Rhys and Mistress Aine (the other 2 Musketeers!), created and maintained the Pennsic Periscope, set up ÆTube, created the pictoral timeline of our Royalty, helped train and mentor webministers (and anyone desiring to learn to build a website), helped institute Zoom with THL Sumayya when the Great Plague came to our lands, assisted with ÆLive and Æthereal Courts, and instituted Google for Æ. I also have a new Zip Code finder ready to go once there is data, as this is one of the most requested features that was lost from our old website.

Also, during the kingdom’s jaunt into Zoom, Sumayya and I were training people to use Zoom and helped with consults from other Kingdoms, answering questions about Virtual Courts and how to effectively use and moderate Zoom rooms (as Æ was first!!).

As the Earl Marshal’s webminister, I also maintain the marshal database. In general, once a website is created, it needs to be maintained. Each site has it’s own personality, so what “goes into it” is based on the site, but the maintenance of these other sites takes only a few minutes here and there. The main builds, though, can range from a few hours to a week or so, depending on how much data is needed to be posted.

When you started in the SCA what goals did you have? To learn. Everything and anything — absorb it all… just like a sponge!

What are your goals now? To continue learning. To continue teaching. To continue being of service and fostering others to do service. (& to not have helium hand) and to continue having fun with what activities I participate in (and encourage others to try them out!)

What was the most intimidating thing you encountered in the SCA?

The webminister position was open in the Barony and I submitted a Letter of Intent (with the encouragement of many of my friends) to be the next Baronial officer and was turned away (coupled with a second retracted offer) in a fashion that would make many people leave forever. I am ever thankful that my friends were there to lift my spirits and that I did not walk away.

After the unexpected shutdown ends, what is one thing you would like to accomplish in the SCA? I would like to attend some larger events outside of Æthelmearc, like Gulf Wars or Birka.

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA, or if new yourself what question would you ask and who would you ask it of?

1. Don’t be afraid of people in shiny hats or people with titles like Duke, Duchess, King, Queen, Sir, Master, or Mistress. Every single person in our Society started playing at one point and were in the same place you are today.

2. Ask ALL the questions.

3. Ask the same questions to multiple people to get a well-rounded view of your answer.

4. Try ALL the things.

5. You don’t need to be good at all the things.

6. Only do the things that you enjoy doing.

7. If you are able, help with set up and tear down. You will make friends and many hands make light work.

8. Ask about / know the rituals for elevations. Be aware of what takes place so there are no surprises to you while watching one for the first time.

9. Always say thank you.

If you magically woke up with an SCA talent you do not already have, what would it be? Pattern drafting. I could then make “all the garb” (and other really awesome fabric-inspired projects)!

If you had to join the SCA in another “era” (1970, 1980, etc.), what “era” would you pick and why? 1980s. I have this vague recollection of seeing fighting somewhere in Thescorre as a kid. I wish my family had stopped to see it that day, rather than rubbernecking in the car. I think I’d have been a member 30 years earlier if that had happened. Then instead of hearing all the stories of what happened in these years, I’d have seen some of it first-hand.

Don’t be modest, what award or honor would you like to receive above all else and why? A Peli… ahem, wait a moment…

A Fleur. I have been doing arts and crafts my whole life. Now, I have learned new art forms because of playing in the SCA and have found some niches — like micrography.
