AEthelmearc War Practice, Bardic, Brewing, scribal

One more weekend, and it is time to pack the camping gear, head out of town and enjoy the copious A&S activities at the Æthelmearc War Practice! With the Return of the Great Hall, boy, do we have a line up… There will be Artisan Playtime, there will be Scribal Playtime, there will be Brewing, there will be Bardic – as well as a woodworking demo and whatever other projects the populace brings for show and tell. Reserve some time out of your busy schedule of martial activities and classes for the many Cool Things happening in the Great Hall yet once again!

Brews and Bards in the Barn Social from 4-8pm in the Great Hall

Master Morien MacBain performs on the field.

To start the weekend off with a bang, the Brews and Bards in the Barn social will happen Friday from 4-8 PM in the Great Hall. Sylvan Bards THLady Maggie Rue and Master Morien MacBain plan a bardic circle together with the pouring of libations by the Brewers Guild. Master Morien would invite prospective Bards to partake of his Eleanor of Aquitaine Challenge! He offers a pair of prizes, one for Joglars or Best Performance and one for Trobars or Best Poem or song Composed on-site, during the evening! He will announce the topic at 5PM and composers may either present their work themselves, or designate another to do so. Eleanor of Aquitaine was the great patroness of the troubadours; the trobars were the writers, the joglars were the singers and a person could be both.

The Æthelmearc Guild of Brewers, Vintners, and Meadhers is working hard on restoring the Pennsic Bar and intends to have it up and running to be able to serve cold brews and fruity meads during the Brews and Bards in the Barn revelry. The first part of the evening the Brewers Guild plans a social get-together or round table for all our brewers old and new to meet and greet the many familiar and perhaps not so familiar faces we have not seen since far too long. Have you kept on brewing? Bring something to share. Are you looking for feedback? Definitely bring something to share! We welcome all, and will also have non-alcoholic beverages available.

Artisan Playtime from 1-5 PM in the Great Hall

A plow plane used for cutting the groove for a panel in a frame.

My personal favorite, woodworking virtuoso Master Robert of Sugargrove will bring his collection of hand tools to demonstrate commonly used period techniques. He shared with me: “I usually do a little stock prep – rough scrub plane & finish smooth plane – how we make a flat, true board; then either some dovetail work or mortise & tenon joinery.”

Master Robert likes to get random folks to try plane work; to give them a sense of what is involved in just getting out a board for a project. He hopes woodworkers will stop by with questions, like what type of wood to use, which joint where, how do I lay out for joinery and such, which Master Robert does not think “really anything unusual or cool,” but I beg to differ!

Teaching the populace the proper way to handle a plane.

Scribal Playtime from 1-5 PM in the Great Hall

Is woodworking not really your thing? THLady Eleanore Godwin is coordinating Scribal Playtime during the same time slot of 1 – 5 PM. She recently secured supplies from her locals the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael (thank you, Mistress Cori!) and looks forward to sharing her tables with the populace. Would you like to get feedback on an existing project? Bring it and share! Are you new to the art but curious to try your hand? Choose a bookmark or perhaps a scroll blank and give it a swing! You never know until you try, right?

At Artisan Playtime, everyone is welcome set up a table and chair and share what they are working on, or to stop by and be inspired by what others are working on. Artisan Playtime is a most wonderful way to see artisans in action, to socialize and network – and to get out of the rain / sun / whatever Pennsylvania Spring has in store for us!

KMoAS Consultation Table from 1 – 5 PM in the Great Hall

A reminder, the Kingdom Ministry of Arts & Sciences will arrange for an A&S Consultation Table during Artisan Playtime for those new, and not so new, to the arts & sciences to chat about projects, progress and inspirations. Come hang out with us, ask questions about research, documentation and entering for future events, or just plain enjoy the view of art happening in real time!

Hope to see you there.
Elska

Please Contact Me if you would like to know more.
It is probably not a bad idea to bring a comfy chair.

AEthelmearc War Practice, Court Report

Here continues the Record of the Second Reign of Gareth and Juliana, King and Queen of Sylvan Æthelmearc on the Occasion of War Practice, May 18, AS 54, in Their Shire of Steltonwald; as recorded by THL Arias Beltran del Valle,  with the assistance of Lady Nichola Beese, and the support of Lord Fiachna MacCennetig.

In the morning:

Their Majesties gathered the kingdom on the field of battle and summoned before them Burgos the Tiny.  His renown on the field had only grown of late, with tales of his skill with sword and shield especially making their way to Them.  So pleased were they with his talents, that They summoned to Them Their Noble Order of the Gage, and bid them bear him forth to join their number.

They then called before Them His Lordship Ian Campbell.  Having been previously given the task of setting a date to sit vigil to contemplate elevation to the Order of the Laurel, They asked if he was prepared to complete that duty.  Having answered in the affirmative, Their Majesties summoned to them Their Most Noble Order of the Laurel, and with his other oaths then lifted, bid that Order to bear him away to the place prepared for his vigil.

Next did They call to Their presence Mistress Roberta McMorland.  Appearing as commanded, she confirmed to Their Majesties that she was prepared to consider her elevation to The Most Noble Order of the Pelican.  Then did They call for that Order to bear her forth to the place prepared for her to receive counsel on her pending elevation.

Court was then suspended.

In the afternoon:

Their Majesties invited Her Highness of the East Margarita to join Them in Their Court, and shared gifts of largesse from Their Sylvan Kingdom with Her.

Fritz Kupferhelbelinc was called to appear in Their Court. Many times had he entered the lists to compete in the Kingdom Youth Championship, and often did he win those tournaments to claim the title.  For his continued display of talent on the list field was he awarded a Silver Alce. Scroll by her Excellency Shirin al-Sussiyya.

Their Majesties then called for Dylan, Fox, and Beren to attend them.  They had a chance to witness their prowess in arms during the tournament to decide Their Youth Champions on that day.  Both had distinguished themselves on the field and emerged victorious.  So did They name them Youth Champions of their respective divisions.

Their Majesties then invited those newcomers attending their first event to come forward and be recognized, and each were granted a token to welcome them as they began their journey in the Society.

Meesteres Odrianna vander Brugghe was next invited to Court to speak.  She spoke to Their Majesties and the populace about the Scarlet Apron competition held that weekend, and did thank the many entries for their tasty and creative offerings.  But only one could be named victor, and so did Meesteres Odrianna name that gentle to be Master Dagonell, who was called forth and recognized for his contribution.

Lord Ronan O’Conall then was called before Their Majesties to speak about the Archery Championship shoot that was held that day.  Many lords and ladies came to vie for the honor of being known as Champion, but in the end, he reported that Lord Snorri skyti Bjarnarson emerged victorious.  So did Their Majesties name him Their Archery Champion.

His Lordship Aodhan MacMichael was then summoned to appear before Their Majesties.  He was known to Them as a fierce combat archer on the heavy field, but also made known to Them was his service to support that community.  So were They minded to add him to Their Order of the Keystone. Scroll by her Excellency Helena Mutzhasen.

Their Majesties next called before them Lady Keara Caitlin McLeod. Long had she helped in event kitchens, hosting meetings at her home, and driving dart carts at Pennsic.  They found her work to be worthy indeed, and so did They add her to Their Order of the Keystone for that work.  Scroll by her Excellency Ekaterina Volkova.

Lord Dubhgall Domnall McNayre was similarly summoned to appear in Their Court.  His work, too, had been made known to them for his assistance at events, whether setting up or tearing down, or helping wherever is needed.  For this did They induct him, too, into Their Order of the Keystone. Scroll by her Excellency Ismay Ponde.

Her Ladyship Muirgheal inghen Dubhghaill, was then called before their Majesties. Her work in brewing, research into cooking, and singing with the Debatable Choir as well as assisting the i Genisii Commedia troupe with makeup and hair is well known, and so they did admit her to Their Order of the Sycamore. Scroll by Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope.

Drotinn Jorundr hinn Rotinn was next called before Them.  His work in many areas of the kingdom had been well known to many, but his expertise in period cooking had been earning greater renown.  For this work were Their Majesties of a mind to add him to Their Order of the Sycamore.  Scroll by their Excellencies Brandubh and Hilderun.

Lady Elizabeth Jacobsdottir was next called to appear before Them.  While she takes the field to defend her kingdom, one specific occasion had earned her greater renown, as she was responsible for stopping an attack on the flank of the kingdom’s army at Pennsic last year.  In gratitude of her strong defense did They name her to Their Order of the Golden Thorn.

Lord Robert pour Maintenant was next called before Their Majesties.  Long had he labored on behalf of his kingdom and his barony in many different capacities, from marshal to retainer to simply assisting as tasks come up.  Their Majesties had been made aware of this work, as had Their Noble Order of the Millrind, who was also summoned to them to add Lord Robert to their number. Scroll by her Excellency Shirin al-Sussiyya.

Their Majesties then bade the Order remain, for upon its advice, they felt it to still be incomplete.  So did they also call for the presence of Edward of Freeholt.  His consistent and valuable work behind the scenes at events and on behalf of his local group had earned him the moniker of “the Fixer” as his work was deemed by many to be indispensable when needed.  So too did Their Majesties bid him join the same Order (Millrind).  Scroll by Lord Owen Tegg.

Next was his Excellency Edward Harbinger called to appear in Court. While many who participate in martial activities do so on the list field, his Excellency’s skill on the thrown weapons range had also grown to be great.  This had not escaped their attention, and so were they minded to create him a member of Their Order of the White Horn.  Scroll by Vivienne of Yardley and her Excellency Shirin al-Sussiyya.

Their Majesties next called for the presence of His Lordship Lotharius Qui et Segimundus.  As they had seen the growth of His Lordship Burgos, so too had Lotharius’ skill fighting with two weapons been noticed by both Themselves and their Noble Order of the Gage.  That Order was then summoned to appear again, and were bidden to take His Lordship forth to greet him as one of their own.  Scroll by Mistress Luceta di Cosimo.

Their Majesties then invited to Their Court Their honored Ancestor, Her Grace Anna Leigh. Her Grace has organized the teaching of classes for the day, and had encouraged those present at the event to avail themselves of the wide variety of topics available.  She then offered a special token to those who taught or had spent six hours or more in the classes offered throughout the event.

Before she could leave, Their Majesties bade her hold a moment.  Her Majesty had become much closer to Her Grace during the preceding reign and had come to know of her great skill in many areas, such as the creation of jewelry, especially in Roman style, and the making clothing and accessories, as well.  But others had spoken highly of her work to Their Majesties, and so did They summon to Them Their Order of the Fleur d’Æthelmearc, admitting her to their number.  Scroll by her Excellency Shirin al-Sussiyya.

Before continuing with Their Court, Their Majesties also bid this Order to stay before them, for the Order had also advised them of the work of Lady Aranwen ferch Rhys ap Gwalter, whose work in making glass beads and earned her renown in the artistic community of the kingdom.  Further did she share that work with others desiring to learn it.  So did Their Majesties name her, too, to join the Noble Order of the Fleur d’Æthelmearc.  Scroll by their Excellencies Graidhne ni Ruaidh and Shirin al-Sussiyya.

Their Majesties then called for his Lordship Ian Campbell to attend them once again.  Having contemplated his impending elevation to the Order of the Laurel, They asked if it was still his wish to join that august Order.  He affirmed that desire and so did Their Majesties call for testimony as to his worthiness to join that Order.

Such testimony was provided by Her Grace Anna Leigh as a member of the Order of the Rose, Duke Rurik as a royal peer, Mistress Ælfra and Master Tower as companions of the Pelican, Mistress Philippia of the Order of the Laurel, Sir Hrothgar as a member of the Chivalry, and Master Iago as a Master of Defense.  Their Majesties heard their words and deemed Ian worthy of recognition as a peer of the kingdom.  He was then invested with the trappings of his station and presented as a member of the Order of the Laurel. Scroll was a work in progress.

Don Po Silvertop was next called to appear in Court before Their Majesties. His prowess as a fencer had been known to many, and had earned him respect and admiration from many around the kingdom.  Greatly please were Their Majesties with his skill on the rapier field, and so had others spoken to Them of his progress.  With that in mind did They call before Them the members present of the Most Noble Order of Defense, and did send Don Po with them to find a time where he might consider elevation to that Order.

Their Majesties then called for his Excellency Padraig Brandubh to attend them.  He sits as Baron of the Rhydderich Hael, helping to defend those lands from invasion and support its populace.  But this is just the latest in a litany of work that Padraig has performed to build the populace and the kingdom.  Their Majesties found his work to be worthy of great recognition, as did the members of the Most Noble Order of the Pelican.  So did they summon that great order and ask his Excellency to consider elevation to sit with them at a future date.  Scroll by her Excellency Shirin al-Sussiyya.

With the Order in attendance, Mistress Roberta McMorland was once again invited to Their Majesties’ presence.  She, too, had heard advice on her elevation during the day, and confirmed to Their Majesties her desire to join that Order (Pelican).  Their Majesties then asked for words from those present on her worthiness.

Testimony to that effect was provided by Countess Elena as a royal peer, Master Grendel as a Master of Defense, Mistress Mahin as a member of the Laurel, Sir Dominic from the Order of Chivalry, and Countess Margerite as a Pelican.  Their Majesties deemed those words to be most valuable, and believed her prepared for inclusion amongst the Companions of the Pelican.  So did they invest her with the trappings of that Order and present her to the kingdom as a Mistress of the Pelican.  Scroll was a work in progress.

Her Ladyship Maggie Rue was then called before their Majesties and awarded the Golden Escarbuncle by Her Majesty for her inspirational work for the kingdom.

Her Majesty then asked the young Beren to return to Court.  His victory in the youth lists had already been recognized in Court, but of greater note was his conduct during the fighting, encouraging his opponent to greater deeds despite opposing them at the exact moment.  So moved was she by his courtesy on the field that she named him Her Inspiration for the day and awarded him a Golden Escarbuncle.

Their Majesties then asked that the scribes and artisans who contributed to awards handed out that day to stand and be recognized.

There being no further business before Them, Their Court was then closed.

The Order of the Pelican was then called into court. Once the flock was assembled, Mistress Antoinette de la Croix was asked to present herself. After confirming that both the Order and the good Mistress wanted the inclusion to happen, it was asked if there were any who would speak on Mistress Antoinette’s behalf. Countess Juliana Delamere spoke on behalf of the Royal Peers of the Society. Mistress Alicia Langland, representing the Jewels of Æthelmearc, told of the worthiness of the candidate. Duke Malcolm Duncan Mac Eoghainn spoke as a representative of the Order of Chivalry. The Order of the Laurel was represented by Hrefna fruþikona in heppna Þorgrímsdottir, and Mistress Fredeburg von Katzenellenbogen spoke for the Order of Defense. Finally, Mistress Graidhne ni Ruaidh spoke on behalf of the Order of the Pelican. Upon hearing of the endorsements from the Peerages of the Society, Their Majesties agreed that it was a good and proper thing. A Gollar was called for to mark Mistress Antoinette’s new station. She was then presented with the Ancestral Medallion of the Order of the Pelican in Æthelmearc as well as a personal broach and medallion. Mistress Antoinette gave her oath to the Kingdom as a member of the Order of the Pelican. The scroll, illuminated by THL Vivienne of Yardley and calligraphed by Mistress Alicia Langland, was then read into record.

The Order was asked to remain and THL Ursula of Rouen was called in. The Order as assembled was asked if they still wished for Her Ladyship to be one of them. After receiving confirmation, Their Majesties asked Ursula if she had received counsel and if she desired to be counted among the ranks of the Pelican. She happily said yes. It was then asked if there was a Royal Peer who would attest to her worthiness. Duke Maynard von dem Steine claimed that honor. His Royal Majesty Alric of the Mists claimed the right to speak as a member of the Order of the Chivalry and said that she was his Peer. The Order of the Laurel was represented by Duchess Ilish O’Donnovan, who also agreed that Her Ladyship was worthy of inclusion into the Peerage. When asked if there was a member of the Order of Defense who could speak, Master Emily of Dunvegan spoke on behalf of Ursula. Dame Vivienne Marie de Beauvais then stepped forward and spoke for the Order of the Pelican. Their Majesties, upon hearing the witnesses, agreed that the ceremony should progress. She was given a Norse coat to mark her new station and keep her warm. A Cap of Maintenance was then presented to her. Mistress Antoinette de la Croix then passed the Kingdom Ancestral Medallion to her and a personal medallion was given as well. After receiving her oath, Their Majesties asked that the words marking the occasion be read. Words by Master Quinn Kerr were read and a glittery promissory scroll by Lady Ylaire St. Claire was presented.

Ursula Pel Aine

Their Majesties then called before them the Order of the Laurel. Noting that the Order is smaller than They expected, THL Ishiyama Gen’tarou Yori’ie was summoned into court. He was then instructed to present himself at the Pennsic War, where he will sit vigil and contemplate inclusion into this august Order.

Their Majesties then spoke of the amazing artisans who labor long hours over their art, only to give it away in court so that people may have a remembrance of the day. It was then asked that all scribes stand and be thanked for the continued hard work.

Her Majesty then told of how, after Her many years in the Society, it is rare for her to experience something new. But this day she was able to witness a Japanese Tea Ceremony and was moved by the beauty and artistry of it. For this she did name Lord Amano Zenjirou Nakatsune and Lady Oribe Tsukime as Her inspirations for the day.

It was then announced that there would be a performance by I Genesii immediately after Court.

Their Majesties then thanked all those who came, took classes, fought, and ran the event. Their Highnesses also thanked the populace and said that They are looking forward to the fun to be had over the next year.

Their Majesties of the Midrealm offered their appreciation for the event and thanked Their Majesties for allowing Them to join Their Court. Her Majesty Katherine then presented gifts to the Royal Family in a token of friendship.

There being no further business, court was then closed.

Good Gentles! War Practice is almost here!

…… Okay, maybe not *almost,* but it is close enough to start thinking about the Scarlet Apron Cooking Competition! The challenge for 2018 will require a bit more time to prepare, so we wanted to make our announcement early. We hope you will join us!

The next Scarlet Apron will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Æthelmearc War Practice.

Your challenge: Period Food Preservation! Those wishing to compete should plan on presenting a medieval food item that has been preserved using techniques outlined or described in SCA-appropriate food and cooking resources. We’re looking for food that has been pickled, brined, cured, dried, candied, en confit, or fermented — if it was made to last, we want to see it on the entry table! (Please keep in mind – documentation is required for this challenge!)

Contestants should plan to have a portion of their medieval preserves available to be sampled by the judges and populace, as well as some to remain untouched to be left on display for presentation purposes.

More information will be provided as arrangements are made. In the meantime, please send any questions to Edelvrouw Lijsbet de Keukere (Facebook Messenger is preferred – Keirin Lazauskas-Ralff).

Great Beverage Showcase & Social – War Practice 2018

AEthelmearc Brewers Guild, AEthelmearc Cooks Guild, AEthelmearc War Practice, vintners

by Viscountess Lucilla Theresa de Courtenay

Countess Anna Leigh has conspired to create yet another fun activity at War Practice coming up this spring: the Great Beverage Showcase & Social. What does this entail, you may ask? Very simply, it is part competition, part social event, part inter-guild round table. The Showcase & Social brings together three of Æthelmearc’s guilds to present beverages of all types in a competition involving three different tiers of judging. Entrants will be able to choose the tier in which they compete: the Master level, which will be conducted in much the same manner and to the same standards as a Kingdom A&S; the Artisan level, which will be judged formally, but for which the documentation requirements are not nearly so stringent; the Aspirant level, which will be judged by the populace attending the social event. While the more formal judging is taking place, the populace at large will be enjoying a variety of beverages made available by those who revel in watching other people “enjoy drinking their stuff.”

The Grand Beverage Competition portion of the activity includes three guilds, each responsible for judging within their area of responsibility. The Æthelmearc Guild of Brewers, Vintners, and Meadhers will judge alcoholic beverages created through fermentation.

AEthelmearc Brewers’ Guild

The Æthelmearc Herbal & Apothecary Guild will judge cordials and potable infusions.

Æthelmearc Herbal & Apothecary Guild

The Worshipful Company of Cooks & Bakers will judge non-alcoholic beverages of all types.

Æthelmearc Cooks Guild

There will be prize winners in all three tracks, as well as at both levels of competition: Master and Artisan. The Social portion of the activity allows any beverage maker to showcase their wares without having to worry about documentation or critique, although Aspirants will be able to seek more formal evaluation of their beverages if they choose. Prizes will also be awarded for how the populace and a few VIPs judge the Aspirant beverages.

Her Excellency called on the heads of the various guilds to assist in bringing her vision to fruition. I had an opportunity to speak with these folks and get some perspective on this rather unusual concept for a competition.

Interviewer (I): This is a slightly different take on competitions. How and why did you conceive of this event?

Anna Leigh (AL): Opportunities for beverage makers to participate in many A&S activities have been shrinking due to the rise in the number of dry sites. This is an opportunity to bring the populace of the kingdom together for a good time as well as to celebrate those who willingly provide our libations.

Madoc Arundel (MA) (Brewers Guild): Anna Leigh contacted me about a multi-tier brewing competition. We brainstormed a bit before realizing that this was an excellent opportunity to bring multiple guilds together.

I: What advantages do you see from a competition structured in this manner?

AL: It’s an open and inviting construct. We invite everyone of any skill level, experience, or desire to participate without the pressure of the more formal constructs.

Maggie Rue (MR) (Herbal & Apoth): Allowing people to join in for a populace vote without worry of being judged will provide a “safe” haven for those that feel daunted by rubrics and highly authentic competitions. It also allows people to decide whether or not they wish to be judged on a heavier scale, in turn, allowing those who want to be recognized for their accomplishments to push themselves even harder.

Arianna Dal Vallone (ADV) (Cooks & Bakers): Having a populace category without documentation will encourage more beginners to try. I know as a young SCAdian, documentation was the most intimidating thing for me, and it took me almost three years to work up the courage to enter an A&S competition because of this.

I: How does this event promote your specific guild?

ADV: It will allow cooking enthusiasts a chance to look at a side of the art they tend to ignore or lump in with brewers’ arts.

MR: The herbalists and apothecaries would have been the top places in period for obtaining tonics, medicines, and alchemical potions of a myriad of types; a contest such as this will help the H&A Guild introduce themselves to the rest of the kingdom.

Elska a’ Fjarfelli (EF) (Brewers Guild): The more that people know about what the guilds can do for them, the more people are likely to join in our fun.

I: From your perspective, how will this event promote interactivity between the guilds?

MR: I think an event such as this will allow the guilds to see how much they have in common and how much they should be working together to create a better Society.

ADV: It will begin a dialogue between brewers, cooks, and apothecaries.

MA: Where beverages sit in the A&S spectrum has been a topic of discussion for decades. By involving all three guilds in this endeavor, we show a united understanding of how to promote the research and creation of any beverage, regardless of which guild takes responsibility for it.

I: What do you hope will be the long-term benefits?

AL: By creating a fun opportunity to mingle and meet people, structured around an open and welcoming competition, we’ll generate excitement for the various beverage crafts and help the community grow.

EF: As long as it is integrated with the guilds, feeding into and promoting their structure, I hope to see a renewed interest in historic beverage-making.

ADV: A better communication between the guilds in Æthelmearc, which can only make us stronger. More attention to beverages in our arts and sciences.

MR: I am hoping that this will lead to more inter-guild competitions as well as inter-kingdom competitions, and that the guilds may end up working together to autocrat various events such as academies and collegiums, even going so far as to help work each other’s events to ensure that the Society as a whole benefits.

MA: My biggest hope is that people who are making quality beverages will become comfortable enough with the concept of competition, formal or informal, to be able to be recognized for their contributions.

Countess Anna Leigh’s Great Beverage Showcase & Social will take place Friday evening at War Practice (2018).

An event page has been established on Facebook:

AEthelmearc War Practice, Artisan, Artisan's, Artisans Playtime

Artisans’ Play Time. Photo by Cat Clark.

From Mistress Orianna, Deputy Kingdom Minister of Arts & Sciences:

Greetings all!
Once again we will be having an artisan’s playtime at Æthelmearc War Practice, Saturday, May 20 in the Great Hall.
This is open to any and all who wish to share their art with others — the idea is to provide an opportunity for folks to try your art and share your art with like-minded or budding artisans.
Ideally, we would like a community of artisans who work in the same medium to create a collective but if you are by yourself that is fine too.  And we welcome and encourage our youth artisans to join too!
As much as is possible, all playtimes must be accessible to young people.  Younger children must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult to participate, but sharing what we do with the youth of the Kingdom is important.
If you have any questions or would like to let me know you would be participating, please contact Orianna.
Looking forward to a fun and learning experience!

Scarlet Apron Cooking Contest in Two Weeks!

AEthelmearc War Practice, cooking competition, Scarlet Apron

Cooks of Æthelmearc! The time has come to season your skillets and muscle up your mixing arms – The Scarlet Apron demands a new champion be chosen, so that it may dress a new breast this year!

Join us at noon on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Æthelmearc War Practice, and show your mettle as an entrant in The Scarlet Apron Food & Cooking Competition. Cooks of all experience levels are welcome and encouraged to enter – whether you are new to the SCA or medieval cooking, or you are a veteran of the event kitchen, there is room at our table for you!

This year’s competition theme is “Family Meal Time,” for which entrants are encouraged (but not required) to work with someone in their family – however they choose to define it – to create a medieval version of a modern meal that frequents their dinner tables at home (i.e. lasagna, a roast with trimmings, chicken nuggets and fries, etc.).

These meals must be sourced from reliable cooking texts, which may be from anywhere and any time in SCA period. If using multiple sources from different cultures, it must be plausible that the combination of dishes being served would have been seen on the same table at the same time (for example, it is plausible that many recipes from English and French texts could have been found on the same menu, depending on what time period it was; Likewise, it is not as plausible that a recipe from ancient Rome found its way to the same table as an Elizabethan English dish, and so would be an unfavorable combination for this competition).

Entries should contain an entrée and at least two side dishes, and be accompanied by a brief documentation form for each dish (to be provided – coming soon!). Presentation counts – plan on dressing up your table and your service so it is pleasing to the eye!

Pre-registration is required to participate. There will be an announcement once the web site has been updated for this year’s competition, including a new registration form. In the meantime, start planning your entry, and send any questions to Edelvrouw Lijsbet de Keukere (Keirin Lazauskas-Ralff on Facebook Messenger, or email here).

We are so excited to see what you bring to the table this year!
