Agincourt, Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands, Court Reports

Here begins the Report of the Court of Gareth and Juliana, King and Queen of Æthelmearc, at Agincourt in the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands, October 23, AS 56, jorundr hinn rotinn, Silver Buccle Herald, reporting, with the Assistance of Baron Arias Beltran del Valle, Sigil Herald, THLady Nichola Beese, and Ebyjousie.

On the fencing field.

Their Majesties called Lord Li Chang before Them. Lord Li has been learning much about the art of Chinese combat so that he might apply it to his fencing, and has gained much skill on the field. For this Their Majesties were pleased to induct him into Their Order of the Golden Alce. Scroll by Morikawa Rei.

On the field later in the day.

Their Majesties summoned Thorinn of the Debatable Lands to appear before Them. Thorinn has been reported to be helpful around his barony, and he further assisted with the bar at Æthelmearc Royal encampment at Pennsic. He is also known to be an archer. For these and more, Their Majesties did Award him Arms. Scroll by Gesa von Wellenstein.

Their Majesties next sought Lady Rose O’Tierrany. Her skill in the scribal arts has grown much over the past few years and she has created many scrolls for both her barony and the Kingdom. For this she was added to the rolls of the Order of the Sycamore. Scroll by Arianna of Wynthrope.

In the evening. Joined by Their Excellencies Brandubh and Hilderun, Baron and Baroness of the Debatable Lands.

Their Majesties gave leave to Their Excellencies to hold Baronial court.

Their Majesties invited all those who were attending their first Royal Court to attend Them. They gave mugs made by the artisans of the Kingdom to the newcomers and invited them all to drink in good health and enjoy the society and all it has to offer.

Their Majesties next gave leave to Their Silver Buccle Herald, jorundr hinn rotinn, to perform some heraldic business. Baron Brandubh O’Donnghaile, Sigil Herald was called to present himself. Baron Brandubh has served as Sigil Herald to the last 3 Silver Buccles, and has aided the College of Arms immensely, however it was now time that he be allowed to step down from that office and take a much deserved break. Thus Baron Arias Beltran del Valle was called to present himself. Baron Arias did agree to take up that office and serve the Æthelmearc College of Heralds as Sigil Herald, the Senior Deputy Herald.

Their Majesties next inducted Katrina Beese into the Order of the Silver Alce in absentia for her pursuit of the fencing arts and archery. Promissory Scroll by Arianna of Wynthrope.

Their Majesties next sought Lemony of the Debatable Lands. She has also been shooting archery and fencing. Their Majesties found this to be a good thing, and so inducted her into Their Order of the Silver Alce. Promissory Scroll by Arianna of Wynthrope.

Their Majesties next summoned before Them a sacrifice. Baron Arias Beltran del Valle had a recent track record of being the kind of person who volunteers for things so he was volunteered. Their Majesties next invited the youth assembled to join Them. They instructed the sacrifice to take the toy box to the back of court and assist the youth in taking goodies.

Their Majesties next invited Their Thrown Weapons Champion, THLord Kumagaya Kentarou Masamoto, to discuss the tournament he held to determine his successor. There were many fine throwers on the field that day, including one who was throwing for the first time, yet still managed to be the only person to successfully attack the enemy camp, Phil of Misty Highlands. However in the end there could only be one victor, Tristyn of Gryffyn’s Keep, who was named Kingdom Thrown Weapons Champion and invested with the regalia of the office, as well as was presented with a prize pouch containing coins from the Moneyer’s Guild, and was invited to join the Royal Court. The Scroll is a scribal west production featuring Nichola Beese, Sorcha MacKenzie, and Graidhne ni Ruaidh.

Their Majesties next invited THLady Kathyrn Täntzel, who ran the tournament to determine the new Archery Champion for Lord Rónán Ó Conaill, who could not attend the event, to speak about the tournament. Of the many fine archers on the field one proved to have the finest aim of the day, Yakub al-Musafir was named Archery Champion and invested with the regalia of that office, as well as was presented with a prize pouch containing coins from the Moneyer’s Guild, and was invited to take his place among the champions. The Scroll is a scribal west production featuring Nichola Beese and Graidhne ni Ruaidh.

Mistress Graidhne ni Ruaidh and THLady Nichola Beese were invited to conduct some personal business in Their Majesties Court. Mistress Graidhne spoke about how THLady Nichola does all the things and wants to learn all the things so she placed a woven belt that was green on one side and yellow on the other around her waist and named THLady Nichola her apprentice.

Their Majesties next summoned Niall Mac Raedwulf to appear before Them. Niall is an archer who also serves by assisting with setting up and moving things for events, he has also assisted with streaming courts so the those that can not attend them in person can still participate. For this did Their Majesties feel moved to Award him Arms. Scroll by Gesa von Wellenstein.

Their Majesties next Awarded Arms, somewhat in absentia, to Reinhard Regenbogen as while not personally present he was able to attend Court through the previously mentioned streaming of Lord Niall. Reinhard has served his Barony as a webminister, and he sings with the Debatable Choir and at bardic circles. Scroll illuminated by Robaird Michael Patrick Timothy James O’Suilleabhainn with calligraphy by Liadin ní Chléirigh na Coilleand words by Lijsbet Hoefman.

Their Majesties next Awarded Arms in absentia to Lartia Cerva. She helps with parade demos, works with needle and thread as well as weaving and other fiber arts. Scroll by Mary Elizabeth Clason.

Their Majesties next sought Scheiny of Dalhraidia. Scheiny is an enthusiastic weaver and member of the fiber guild, and has been active during the online meetings. For this They Awarded her Arms. Scroll by Murdia Drusilla Vellia Portia.

Their Majesties next summoned Finé Failain to attend Them. Finé has been shooting archery, making hats, and making garb, Their Majesties are pleased by this and so did Award her Arms. Scroll by Arianna of Wynthrope.

Their Majesties next summoned Turlough Feolain to appear before Them. Turlough has been spotted shooting archery, brewing mead, and doing woodworking, these are skills Their Majesties like in Their populace. Thus did They Award him Arms. Scroll by Arianna of Wynthrope.

His Majesty addressed the populace and spoke of how for each of the Award of Arms that had just been given someone wrote a letter recommending them to Their Majesties, and He asked that everyone be on the lookout for those that deserve awards and write letters about them.

Their Majesties next inducted Lady Vika Vyborgskaia in the Order of the Cornelian in absentia for her constant courtesy and encouragement of new MOLs and her work in developing the Debatable Lands Stellar Tournaments. The scroll is a Scribal West production featuring Nichola Beese and Edana the Red.

Their Majesties bade Master Jussi Laplein, who was performing the service of delivering Their Majesties words to his Lady, stay with Them for a little longer. Master Jussi performs many services that go beyond his duties as a member of the Order of the Chivalry, he assists with setting up and tearing down the MOL tables and tournament lists, he trains new fighters and works with our youth fighters. For this did Their Majesties induct him into Their Order of the Keystone. Scroll by Forveleth Dunde.

Their Majesties called for Lady Astrid of Helios Fury to appear before Them. Lady Astrid has been helping as a retainer and as a water bearer at Pennsic for quite some time. These actions please Their Majesties and so They were moved to add her to the rolls of Their Order of the Keystone. Scroll by Ekaterina Volkova.

Their Majesties next called for Lord Patrokles Athenaios. His skills as a heavy fighter have been growing and he has performed well on the field, thus Their Majesties were pleased to name him a Companion of the Golden Alce. Scroll by Helena Mutzhasen.

Their Majesties called for Lady Catherine O’Herlihy to present herself before Them. Lady Catherine is known for assisting in many ways. she retains and she water bears at Pennsic. She has even run Water Point at Pennsic, even with a broken bone. Their Majesties had heard much from Her from a certain group, and so did induct Lady Catherine into Their Order of the Millrind. The Scroll is a Scribal West production featuring Nichola Beese, Aurelia Argentia Prima, Graidhne ni Ruaidh and Armiger Sebastian.

THLady Muigheal ingean Dubhghaill was summoned by Their Majesties to present herself before Them. Helpful is her middle name. She exemplifies Service with a smile, and leadership that causes others to follow along. She makes events happen such as Their Majesties previous Crown and Æthelmearc Twenty Year, and Their last Coronation. For this Their Majesties were pleased to make her a Baroness of Their Court. Scroll by Rachel Dalicieux.

Her Majestiy wished to speak to Phil of Misty Highlands. Though this was his first event he tried all the things and was a joy to behold his discoveries. For this did Her Majesty name him Her inspiration for the day and award him a Golden Escarbuncle.

Their Majesties invited all the scribes, guards, and retainers who made court happen to present themselves. Their Majesties then presented them all with payment in the form of coins from the Moneyer’s Guild.

Their Majesties thanked everybody who attended and made the event happen, and invited those that could to attend other events that Their Majesties would be attending, such as Tavern Brawl net week where the Kingdom Arts and Sciences competition will be held, Corn Maze, and Gulf Wars.

Here closes the court of Their Majesties.

Agincourt, Court Reports, Debatable Lands, Queen's Rapier Champion

Being the Chronicle of the Courts of Timothy and Gabrielle, King and Queen of Sylvan Æthelmearc, held on the nineteenth day of October, AS 54 (2019), at Agincourt, in Their Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands. Submitted by Lord Snorri skyti Bjarnarson, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald.

The morning came bright and glorious, and so it was Their Majesties’ pleasure to have their court called into session on the fencing lysts. The day’s combatants were introduced to Them, and Queen Gabrielle did give to each combatant kind words, and a red rose, symbolizing Her love for them as Her subjects and the honor they did Her by fighting to be Her champion. Once all combatants had been introduced, Her Majesty spoke, and wished them all well, and to fight with honor. The tournament did then begin, and there being no further business, court was suspended until such time as Their Majesties desired.

Some time later, Their Majesties, desiring words with Lady Katheryn Täntzel, traveled to the archery lysts, and bade their court be called into session. They spoke of her long service to barony and kingdom as a member of the archery community, and said that there was an order that had consented to her inclusion. Their Order of the Scarlet Guard was called forward, and Lady Katheryn was made The Honorable Lady Katheryn, Scarlet Guard, and she was bade join her new order for congratulations. Later that day she was presented with a lovely scroll from Their Majesties, crafted by THL Gesa Wellenstein. There being no further business at that time, court was again suspended.

Accordingly, later that day Their Majesties again wished words with a gentle upon the fields of combat, and returned to the fencing lysts to reopen their court. Li Chang was called before them, and Their Majesties spoke warmly of his dedication to fencing and contributions to the Society as an artisan, and so Awarded him Arms with a scroll by Lady Murdia Drusilla Vettia Portia.

That evening, the day’s fine fellowship, valiant martial pursuits, and excellent weather, Their Majesties did again call all gentles there present to attend Their court with trumpet blast and loud oyez.

Their Majesties first summoned forward all children there present. When they had assembled, His Majesty spotted a young man who was an erstwhile courter of his eldest daughter. This young man, called Ben, was summoned before the court, and given the kingdom toy chest. With scant instruction, His Majesty gleefully bade young Ben to run, and sent the kingdom’s children in fast pursuit.

Their Majesties then gave leave to His Excellency of the Debatable Lands to hold his court.

Upon completion of the Baronial court, Their Majesties called for all newcomers to approach the throne. These good gentles were welcomed, and given cups made by the kingdom’s artisans, and bade return often to fill them with the Society.

It was then Her Majesty’s pleasure to remind all assembled about Mistress Jenna’s tokens, to be given by anyone for acts of kindness and service they witnessed.

Her Majesty’s words on that subject being finished, the summons went forth for all redheads there present to come forward. Baroness Mistress Anna Eisenkopf spoke of the Taker of Souls Tournaments held that day, and gave accolades to The Honorable Lord Boden as the day’s heavy combat victor, and Lord Mathias al Tabai as the day’s victor of fence.

A missive from Master Antonio de Luna, Kingdom Thrown Weapons Marshal, was read. In it, he commended the following subjects for their skill at knife and axe:

Lord Duncan MacCoulagh, with an average of 84 of 120, has earned the rank of Huntsman.

Lord Maddoc MacRoyri with an average of 102 of 120, has earned the rank of Marksman.

Lord Vilhjalmr Jorgennson with an average of 103 of 120, has earned the rank of Marksman.

The Honorable Lord Kumagaya Kentarou Masamoto with an average of 110 of 120, has earned the rank of Marksman. This being the highest average ever recorded in Æthelmearc, it is especially worthy of note.

All these skilled lords were bidden seek out Master Antonio for a token from him to commemorate their achievement.

There being no further informal business to address, Her Majesty Queen Gabrielle stood and addressed Her court, concerning the day’s tournament held for Her to choose Her champion. She spoke glowingly of all the fencers who had competed to gain her favor, but said that one rose above all others in her esteem that day, and so Master Po Silvertop was called forward. He was invested as Queen’s Rapier Champion with a scroll by Lady Vedis Aradottir of Coppertree, and accoutered with the cape and sword of that honor, and so took his place behind Their Majesties as a Kingdom Champion.

At that time, Their Majesties demanded the presence of Lord Halfdan Rauþkinn. They spoke to all present of this lord’s skill at the making of banners, and at brewing, and that he gave freely of his time as a teacher, and so added his name to the rolls of the Order of the Sycamore, with a scroll by Lady Alysoun of the Debatable Lands.

Their Majesties did then call for Mistress Irene von Schmetterling. She was escorted forward by her lord, and knelt before the Sylvan Throne. Their Majesties spoke of her prowess and steady improvements in the fencing lysts, and so called for Their Order of the White Scarf, as well as any Ladies of the Rose, Garnet, or any other Royal Consorts there present. Mistress Irene was then inducted into that order, and a suitable scarf tied about her arm.

Queen Gabrielle then rose, and spoke with great admiration of a young Baron of the Court who had stepped in to run Her tournament that day, and did so with good cheer and great competence. She names Baron Robert Hawksworth as Her Inspiration that day, and awarded unto him a Golden Escarbuncle, tinted red for service.

Finally, Their Majesties called up all scribes there present who had contributed a scroll to the day’s courts, and each was given a token of appreciation from Their hands.

Rules for the A&S Competition at Agincourt

Agincourt

Greetings!

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting longer (obviously), and if you’re sitting and asking yourself whether you should enter the Agincourt A&S competition and display held on October 20, let me answer that: you should! What do you get? You get to have fun, hang out with like-minded A&S people, showcase your work, and educate populace about what amazing things are possible in A&S.

For several years the Agincourt A&S competition and display was ran by THL Sumayya, who, sadly, has moved to the Midrealm earlier this year. It was run ably, admirably, and pretty much perfectly, so this year we are going to try something different.

In an attempt to improve on perfection, we are introducing a brand new martial component. Should you be unable or unwilling to take a swing at it, a stand-in champion will be provided. The winner of the martial component will be determined by skill and luck (but mostly luck) and will receive a small prize. However, no additional points will be awarded to the A&S entry.

As we in the Society are very good at experimental archaeology and making things, the focus this year is shifted, ever so slightly, from things to context – that is, less emphasis on what, and more on where, why, and how does it fits into the grand scheme of things.

In order to encourage the context, here are the categories this year:

  • Shipwrecks
  • Things that never were
  • The Romans did it better
  • Fit for a king
  • And, in honor of the battle of Agincourt, Projectiles.

The vast majority of A&S projects can fit into the first four categories, the rest will fit into the fifth, as, with enough thrust, anything is a potential projectile. Each category will have a winner who will receive a scroll to commemorate the occasion. (For example, if you decide to submit a scroll blank featuring the grotesques from the book of hours of Joanna the Mad of Castille, you can enter it either under “The things that never were” because of the grotesques or under “Fit for a king” because of royal affiliation.)

If you feel that your A&S awesomeness cannot be contained by a mere category, the Traditional Agincourt Triathlon is still on! To qualify, please submit three entries in three different categories. No entry can be entered in multiple categories. The only exception is the entry that fits in all five categories, and it has to be approved in advance. (So if you have a perfect model of a mythical royal ship that was sunk by a Roman projectile, please contact me.)

Artisans are welcome to enter all kinds of creations; food is perfectly acceptable, however, a list of ingredients and potential allergens is requested. Research papers are welcome and encouraged. Documentation is encouraged, but not required. Novice artisans are encouraged to enter. Those who do not wish to compete may display their entries.

And, remember, our Known World just got bigger! The entries are no longer limited to Western Europe, so if you want to share your Japanese, West African, or Inuit entry, as long as it’s pre-1600, it’s fine.

The same rubrics as for the A&S faire will be used, and are available on request.
Most people entering the A&S competitions know what their deficiencies are, and unfortunately, it seems to be the rubric that tends to attract most comments. Unless the judging is face to face, which is not always feasible, it is rather frustrating to get back a sheet of comments which, while correct, are not particularly helpful. So, to make things more straightforward, you get to drop a rubric of your choice. The rubrics and the scoring sheets will be available at the A&S desk, and you get to cross out the one you feel is not helpful. (For example, if you always get dinged on use of correct materials and are tired of explaining that the price of gold is prohibitive, mercury salts are a health hazard, and grave digging is illegal, just drop that rubric. If documentation is your nemesis, and you have an exemplar, but not the 20 page paper on the history of the thing, feel free to drop the documentation rubric, with one caveat – you still need to provide enough information for the judges to know what is it they are judging. Very basic documentation blank sheets will be provided.)

However, if the scores are tied, the dropped rubric may be scored for the purposes of tie breaking only.

No automatic alt text available.

Prize scroll full of glory by Mistress Luceta di Cosimo

What do you get if you win? Glory. Huge amounts of high quality unadulterated glory you can bask in like Godzilla on the beaches of Tokyo. In fact, as such huge amounts of glory cannot be possibly carried by hand, it will be packaged in a Shiny Scroll and, to make the burden of winning easier, the grand prize (a $50 Amazon gift card).

If you feel that glory is not for you, consider submitting your work to the display or judging the entries. Judges are requested to: be nice, have grant of arms or higher A&S award, have an open mind, and be willing to drink tea and eat cookies (the latter is not a requirement )

If you have any questions, please contact me. Hope to see you all there.

Remember! Glory!!!

Please direct your questions and concerns to Luceta at lucetadicosimo@yahoo.com.

Here continues the Record of the Reign of Gareth and Juliana, King and Queen of Sylvan Æthelmearc, at Agincourt, September 23, Anno Societatis 52, in Their Shire of Sunderoak; as recorded by Lord Arias Beltran del Valle with the assistance of Lord Ronan O’Conall.

Their Majesties first gave leave to Their Excellencies Brandubh and Hilderun, Baron and Baroness of the Debatable Lands, to hold their court.

Their Excellencies’ court having been concluded, Their Majesties invited before them Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope to discuss the tournament held earlier in that day to determine Their Royal Majesties’ Youth Champion. Mistress Arianna informed Them that from the field of 6, two rose above the others, and Fox and Fritz were named Youth Champions in their divisions.

Mistress Arianna asked further leave of Their Majesties to discuss efforts to support those subjects of the Kingdoms of Ansteorra and Trimaris most recently affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. She thanked the populace for their donations thus far, and informed them of further opportunities to donate at future events.

Their Majesties then called forth Lord Robert MacEwin of Thornhill. They tasked him, with the assistance of the other Lord Robert present, to take the toy box away to be found by the children of Æthelmearc, who were then asked to assemble before Their Majesties. Seeing their opportunity, the two Lords Robert sped from the room before the children of the Kingdom were sent to give chase by Their Majesties.

Their Majesties next invited Master Jacopo di Niccolo to attend them. Master Jacopo spoke of the tournament held that afternoon to determine Their Majesties’ Archery Champion. He summoned his Lordship Alrekr Bergsson and Lord Ronan O’Conall, the final two competitors on the day. Lord Ronan finished in second place, and was acknowledged by Their Majesties and granted a token in recognition of his skill.  But his Lordship Alrekr had emerged victorious on the day, and for this was he name Their Majesties’ Archery Champion. He was then granted the trappings of the champion and invited to join Their retinue in Court.

Their Majesties next called for Takamatsu-san Gentarou Yoshitaka. Their Majesties were of a similar mind, and so named him a member of the Order of the Keystone for his service as archery marshal in Their Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands and his time spent working in Their kitchens and as a herald, and his efforts in building a camp gate for the Barony. Their Majesties summoned Lord Otto Boese before them. They thanked Lord Otto for his willingness to take on the role of exchequer in Their home Shire of Misty Highlands, and for making himself available to paint shields for Vikings at Miklagard and helping to set up and tear down other events. Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope was then invited again before Their Majesties. They spoke of Mistress Arianna’s tireless devotion to the Kingdom over many decades, most notably as Kingdom Youth Marshal, and as one who serves where it is needed and is a role model for others to follow.  For these reasons were they moved to claim her as one of Æthelmearc’s own and did give her right to an Augmentation of Arms to be determined in consultation with Their Heralds. Scroll by Master Kieran MacRae.

Their Majesties then invited Master Jacopo di Niccolo to return once again to Their presence. Her Majesty spoke about the success of his tournament to choose the next archery champion, not simply as a way to determine his successor, but also as one of the most entertaining tournaments They had witnessed. For this was Master Jacopo named Her Majesty’s inspiration for the day and given a Golden Escarbuncle.

Their Majesties then bid all those who had worked on those scrolls awarded this day stand and be recognized amongst the populace. They also recognized Mistress Elisabeth Johanna von Flossenburg and Baroness Sybilla Detwyller for their efforts in creating their garb for the day.

There being no further business, the Court of Their Majesties was then closed.

Documented from the Scrolls of the Reign of Marcus & Margerite, King and Queen of Æthelmearc: the Business of Her Majesty Margerite at Agincourt, October 29, Anno Societatis LI, in the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands. As recorded by Maestro Orlando di Bene del Vinta, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald.

In the morning Her Majesty called for THL Kieran MacRae to answer if he would sit vigil this day, receive council, and respond to the question as to whether he would accept membership among the Order of the Laurel. Noting his existing relationship to another, Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope was called into Her Majesty’s presence who then released THL Kieran from her service as her apprentice. Then, THL Kieran was escorted by the Order to a place prepared for his vigil.

In the afternoon, upon the field, Her Majesty gathered Borderwatch before Her and spoke of their selfless service at the Great Pennsic War to Æthelmearc Royal, and so inducted the household into the Order of the Keystone.

Her Majesty’s Rapier Champion, Lord Jacob Martinson, was then called forward, and told of the tournament that day to determine Her Majesty’s next champion. 53 combatants entered the tournament, and Lord Durante de Caravaggio emerged as the victor. And so, Lord Durante was called before Her Majesty and named Her rapier champion, regaled with the accoutrements of this station, and invited to join Her Majesty’s court.

Lord Murdoch Stewart likewise could not hide from the royal gaze and was brought before Her Majesty. Lord Kawamura no Ryotaro Yoshichi was invited to approach Her Majesty, who spoke of his travels across the known world and of the fame he has gained for his prowess with blade. Thus, She recognized and awarded this skill with his induction in the Order of the Golden Alce. Words by Duchess Dorinda Courtenay. Scroll forthcoming

Next, THLady Minamoto Kumamoto Sakurako was called before Her Majesty and did tell the populace assembled of a tale of two fencers who, upon seeing the physical injury sustained by THLady Sakurako during the 7 Pearls Rapier Tournament did choose to give up tactical advantage upon the field and instead sit upon the ground to fight, matching THL Sakurako’s fighting position. For these acts of courtesy upon the field, Her Majesty awarded both Dona Emily of Dunvegan and Lord Padraig Ua Ceileachair a Cornelian in absentia.

Lady Cioaodh Gunn was then summoned before Her Majesty, and spoke of her works as seneschal, autocrat, cook, and retainer. She spoke of her indispensable work at War Practice, and so called forth the Order of Millrind and did induct Lady Cioaodh into said order. Scroll by Baroness Ekaterina Volkova. Additional words by Master Creador Twinedragon.

Her Majesty then required the attendance of Dona Gabrielle de Winter. She recounted Dona Gabrielle’s long service to the rapier community, to the College of Silva Vulcani, and to the Kingdom. Her Majesty then called for the Order of the Pelican and issued to Dona Gabrielle a writ of summons, and commanded her to return at a later date where she will answer the question as to whether she will join that same order.

Having additional business with the Order of the Pelican, a call went forth seeking Baron Robert O’Conner. Words of his deeds had reached the ears of the Crown, raised by many a noble of this Order and beyond. Unable to ignore such a clamor, Her Majesty extended a writ of summons to Baron Robert, and likewise charged that he return at a later date where he will answer the question as to whether he will join the Order of the Pelican. THLord Kieran MacRae next was summoned to Her Majesty. She asked if he had considered well the council given to him this day, and if he still desired to be counted among the members of the Order of the Laurel, to which his lordship responded in the affirmative to both questions. Prince Timothy of Arindale then arose and spoke as a royal peer, stating THL Kieran represents Æthelmearc “old school” style; that he participates in so many activities within the Society, and that he does everything with honor and courtesy.

photo by Lady Aine ny Allane

photo by Lady Aine ny Allane

Sir Kadan Chakilghan Ger on Echen then spoke as a member of the Order of Chivalry on how prowess is defined as skill or mastery of an activity not just limited to fighting. He noted THL Kieran’s prowess in music, in calligraphy, in fighting, and in fact, anything he chooses to undertake. Kameshima-kyo Zentarou Umakai of the Order of the Pelican rose next and spoke of a shared drive to do service. He spoke of the long history between the two as friends, and bore witness of THL Kieran’s gentleness, and kindness, courtesy, and honor. He stated that his lordship learns eagerly, and teaches generously, gives unselfishly of his time and energy, and receives humbly the same from others. Duchess Dorinda Courtenay spoke for the Order of Defense on the difficulty of the road to peerage, and how that road is most difficult toward the end. She spoke of THL Kieran’s ability to handle pressure well, and his display of patience and grace; traits indicative of a peer. Lastly, Master Creador Twinedragon stood and spoke on behalf of the Order of the Laurel. He recounted THL Kieran’s love and support of the arts and how he teaches to all who cannot get away fast enough. He spoke of how he offers kind words and guidance to others, and how he has clearly demonstrated mastery in calligraphy.

Having heard the words of these Peers of the Realm, Her Majesty did call that this man be regaled in the vestments of the Order. A hood was brought forth and placed over his head, a medallion of his new station was hung about his neck, and a wreath of golden laurel leaves were then placed upon his brow. Being thus regaled, Her Majesty received his oath and did proclaim him Maighstir Kieran MacRae, Companion of the Order of the Laurel. Scroll forthcoming by Baroness Ekaterina Volkova and THLady Sophie Davenport.

photo by Lady Aine ny Allane

Her Majesty then spoke to the assembled populace of a lord who inspired Her this day. She spoke of his act of selflessness during Her rapier champion tourney in which this Lord gave up his spot in the second round so that another, Countess Ariella of Thornbury, might advance in his stead. Her Majesty then awarded Lord Magnus Bastiano de Vigo with a Golden Escarbuncle in absentia and named him Her inspiration this day.

Her Majesty then offered gratitude for the scribes and wordsmiths this day who had contributed their works so that the works of others might be recognized, and She offered the assembled scribes and wordsmiths a token from Her hand.

There being no further business, this court of Her Majesty was closed.

Faithfully submitted,

A&S, Agincourt, archery, Debatable Lands, Heavy Weapons, Queen's Rapier Champion, rapier, thrown weapons, Youth combat

On October 29th, A. S. LI, the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands held its annual Agincourt event on a gloriously warm and sunny day. Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope reports on the activities held there.

Morning Court

The day began with a brief court. Queen Margerite called forth THLord Kieran MacRae, who received a Writ for the Laurel at Pennsic to present himself at Agincourt. Her Majesty asked if he was ready to sit vigil, to which he responded in the affirmative. However, Queen Margerite noted that Kieran was in fealty to another and must be free before contemplating elevation to the peerage. His Laurel, Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope, was called forward to receive back his green belt and release him from his fealty, after which the Order of the Laurel escorted THLord Kieran to his vigil.

Heavy Weapons Combat

Agincourt has always featured heavy fighting, with combatants choosing to portray either the French or the English as they honor the famous battle of 1415 at which Henry V of England annihilated a much larger and better armed French force.

This year, 38 fighters took the field, including eight combat archers. The fighting began with a Warlord Tourney, from which THLord Tegrinus de Rhina and THLord Rouland of Willowbrooke emerged as the winners, becoming the captains of the French and English Sides, respectively. The French took all of the day’s victory points:  Field Battle, Woods Battle, Combat Soccer, and Hold the Barricade, and as commander of the French side, THL Tegrinus was the overall Warlord Tourney Winner for the day.

The day ended with a series of intense Tavern Brawls, in which Lord Ulrich von Baden, who had previously distinguished himself with a dive-in-and-slide goal that scored the final point for his side in Combat Soccer, was named Last Man Standing.

Rapier

This year Agincourt was honored to host the Queen’s Rapier Champion Tournament. It began with the traditional presentation of fencers to the Queen, each one receiving a rose from Her hand. A huge list of 53 fencers competed, with the tournament fought as round robins in four lists with the top two in each list advancing to the quarter-finals. A noble gesture was made by Lord Magnus bastiano di Vigo, who ceded his spot in the quarter-finals to Countess Ariella of Thornbury that she might have the opportunity to do more fencing and increase her enjoyment of the day. In recognition of this act of kindness, Her Majesty, Queen Margerite, named Lord Magnus her inspiration of the day and bestowed upon him a Golden Escarbuncle at the evening’s court.

The final four fencers were Lord Durante de Caravaggio, Master Clewin Kupferheleblinc, Baron Eric Grenier de Labarre, and Don Po Silvertop. The finals came down to Master Clewin vs. Lord Durante, with Lord Durante winning the coveted title of Queen’s Champion, succeeding the outgoing Champion, Lord Jacob Martinson.

There was also a Free Scholars of the AEthelmearc Rapier Academy tourney run by THLord Jorundr hinn Rotinn, and an “Out of the Box” tourney run by Lord Markus Skalpr Grimsson, in which kills could only be made by shots to the head, arms, hands, legs, and feet. Both tourneys were won by Lord Ru Cavorst.

Video below of the quarter-finals through the finals of the QRC is by Brehan Lapidario.

Youth Combat

Agincourt likewise saw the Kingdom Youth Combat Champions’ tournament. Two enthusiastic young gentles fought three rounds with each of three weapons forms. In the end, Queen Margerite could not choose between them, and so she named Timothy of Arindale the Younger her Division 2 Champion, and Karl her Division 1 Champion. After the youth tourney, several adult sparring partners came forward to cross swords with the new champions, including THLord Rouland of Willowbrooke, Master Jussie Laplein, Prince Timothy of Arindale, and Lord Robert Pour Maintenant.

 Archery

Archery was, of course, at the heart of the original battle of Agincourt, and it was only right that the English did prevail in the shoot run by Master Alaric MacConall, though by a margin of only 2 points. Ronan O’Conall and Duncan MacCoulagh each made 10 point shots that gave the day to the English. Lord Takamatsu Gentarou Yoshitaka also ran a shoot by the victorious English to loot French cheeses, which was won by THLord Alrekr Bergsson with Baron Tofi Kerthjalfadsson coming in second.

Thrown Weapons

The Debatable Lands Baronial Champion tournament was the highlight of thrown weapons at Agincourt. The outgoing Baronial Champion, Master Clewin Kupferhelbelinc, ran the competition, which was hard contested. In the end, Lord Sanada Masamoto Kenshin O’no Kuma proved victorious and was named Champion, with Earl Thomas Byron of Haverford as his second.

Arts and Sciences

For a second year, the event included an A&S competition run by THLady Sumayya al Ghaziya. Entries ranged from scrolls and cooking to research and ceramics. The winner of the single category entry was Lord Ian Campbell of Glen Mor for his ceramic tiles, while Lady Luceta di Cosimo won the multiple entry category for items including cookies and research into medieval burial practices. Lord Ian was inducted into the Fleur d’Æthelmearc at court later that evening. A slideshow of some of the entries is shown below

Evening Court

After a Baronial Court where the winners of each competition were announced and rewarded, and various baronial awards were bestowed, Queen Margerite held court attended by Prince Timothy and Princess Gabrielle, as well as the Crown Prince and Princess of the Middle, William and Isolde. In addition to the accolades noted above, highlights from the evening court included the induction of Lady Cionaodh Gunn into the Order of the Millrind; the elevation of THLord Kieran MacRae to the Order of the Laurel, and Writs of Summons for the Pelican to Doña Gabrielle de Winter and Baron Robert O’Connor.

Food and Entertainment

Of course Agincourt would not be complete without food. THLady Ottilige Rappoltsweiler and Edelvrowe Lijsbet du Keukere organized a lunch buffet of chicken, blancmanger, vegetables and fruit, while Meesteress Odriana vander Brugghe and her crew provided the evening feast. Supper began with a toast to the late Lady Adriana Ramstar, after which there were readings from the Canterbury Tales. Then dish after dish arrived including various meats, pies, rice, Brussels sprouts, and a large marzipan and cake soteltie of the Shield of Chivalry made by Lady Zianna beguy urdina de Zabaleta.

The evening was capped off with a performance by the ever-bawdy commedia troupe, i Genisii, whose show included a seasonally appropriate undead Pantalone attempting to control his daughter Octavia by means both foul and humorous.

Thanks to all of the photographers listed above, as well as Lord Markus Skalpr Grimsson, Lord Takamatsu Gentarou Yoshitaka, Master Morien MacBain, Lord Sanada Masamoto Kenshin O’no Kuma  and Baroness Aemilia Soteria for providing information about various activities for this event report.

Agincourt Feast Will Be A Canterbury Tales Experience

Agincourt, Canterbury Tales, Debatable Lands

By Meesteres Odriana vander Brugghe, Head Cook.

The Agincourt feast this year is based on the Canterbury Tales. I have taken a few liberties with the menu to ensure proper balance and variety of dishes. We will be doing a few things differently this time around and hope that you will enjoy the experience.

When you enter the hall, you will see that the tables have been arranged in a “U” formation. The Royalty will be seated at a table located at the bottom of the U. This is an approximation of what may be seen in medieval illuminations.picture-one

The tables will be covered in white linen and a small pitcher, bowl, and a linen towel will be placed every few feet. This is for handwashing prior to dinner.

In accordance with period practice, seating will be done by precedence. When you sign up for dinner, we are requesting that you provide your title to facilitate creating the final seating chart. picture-two

This is not something that we do often and there may be some concerns because it’s new to most people. When we organize the seating, we will be keeping families together so that small children are not seated separately from their parents. Seating by precedence gives you the opportunity to spend time with old friends and acquaintances as well as meeting new people and sharing a meal with them.

Because of the available seating in the hall, we will be seating people both on the inside and outside of the tables. It will look something like this:agincourt-seating

A herald will announce the diners, including High Table. As each person is announced, she or he will then be lead to their seats by a server. Once everyone is seated, diners are encouraged to take advantage of the water, pitcher, and towel to wash their hands before dining. Handwashing before a meal was done before feasts during our period of study in order to assure their fellow diners that their hands were clean (diners were expected to come to the table with hands and nails clean). Handwashing would often be done at a separate basin or the pitcher and basin would be brought to each guest in turn based on his or her rank.

The handwashing water is the handwashing water described in Le Ménagier de Paris using the recipe created by Christianne Muusers.

To make water for washing hands at the table. Boil sage, strain the water and let cool to a little more than tepid. Or take camomille and marjoram in stead [of sage], or rosemary, and boil with orange peel. Bay leaves are also good.

Once handwashing is complete, the feast will commence.

The Readings & Menu

Before each course, there will be a reading from the Canterbury Tales. The reading will be from the introductory poem for the character whose tale the course is based upon. This is entirely done for time considerations.

Here Begynneth the Book of the tales of Caunterbury

(read by Master Morien MacBain)

When April with his showers sweet with fruit

The drought of March has pierced unto the root

And bathed each vein with liquor that has power

To generate therein and sire the flower;

When Zephyr also has, with his sweet breath,

Quickened again, in every holt and heath,

The tender shoots and buds, and the young sun

Into the Ram one half his course has run,

And many little birds make melody

That sleep through all the night with open eye

(So Nature pricks them on to ramp and rage)-

Then do folk long to go on pilgrimage,

And palmers to go seeking out strange strands,

To distant shrines well known in sundry lands.

And specially from every shire’s end

Of England they to Canterbury wend,

The holy blessed martyr there to seek

Who helped them when they lay so ill and weal

Befell that, in that season, on a day

In Southwark, at the Tabard, as I lay

Ready to start upon my pilgrimage

To Canterbury, full of devout homage,

There came at nightfall to that hostelry

Some nine and twenty in a company

Of sundry persons who had chanced to fall

In fellowship, and pilgrims were they all

That toward Canterbury town would ride.

The rooms and stables spacious were and wide,

And well we there were eased, and of the best.

And briefly, when the sun had gone to rest,

So had I spoken with them, every one,

That I was of their fellowship anon,

And made agreement that we’d early rise

To take the road, as you I will apprise.

But none the less, whilst I have time and space,

Before yet farther in this tale I pace,

It seems to me accordant with reason

To inform you of the state of every one

Of all of these, as it appeared to me,

And who they were, and what was their degree,

And even how arrayed there at the inn

And with a knight thus will I first begin.

The First Course

The Franklin’s Portrait

(Read by Count Thomas Byron of Havorford)

There was a franklin in his company;

White was his beard as is the white daisy.

Of sanguine temperament by every sign,

He loved right well his morning sop in wine.

Delightful living was the goal he’d won,

For he was Epicurus’ very son,

That held opinion that a full delight

Was true felicity, perfect and right.

A householder, and that a great, was he;

Saint Julian he was in his own country.

His bread and ale were always right well done;

A man with better cellars there was none.

Baked meat was never wanting in his house,

Of fish and flesh, and that so plenteous

It seemed to snow therein both food and drink

Of every dainty that a man could think.

According to the season of the year

He changed his diet and his means of cheer.

Full many a fattened partridge did he mew,

And many a bream and pike in fish-pond too.

Woe to his cook, except the sauces were

Poignant and sharp, and ready all his gear.

His table, waiting in his hall alway,

Stood ready covered through the livelong day.

At county sessions was he lord and sire,

And often acted as a knight of shire.

A dagger and a trinket-bag of silk

Hung from his girdle, white as morning milk.

He had been sheriff and been auditor;

And nowhere was a worthier vavasor.

The Cook’s Portrait

(read by Meesteres Odriana vander Brugghe)

A cook they had with them, just for the nonce,

To boil the chickens with the marrow-bones,

And flavour tartly and with galingale.

Well could he tell a draught of London ale.

And he could roast and seethe and broil and fry,

And make a good thick soup, and bake a pie.

But very ill it was, it seemed to me,

That on his shin a deadly sore had he;

For sweet blanc-mange, he made it with the best.

The Summoner

“A buckler he had made him of a cake”

Second Course

The Manciple

(read by Baron Brandubh O’Donnghaile)

There was a manciple from an inn of court,

To whom all buyers might quite well resort

To learn the art of buying food and drink;

For whether he paid cash or not, I think

That he so knew the markets, when to buy,

He never found himself left high and dry.

Now is it not of God a full fair grace

That such a vulgar man has wit to pace

The wisdom of a crowd of learned men?

Of masters had he more than three times ten,

Who were in law expert and curious;

Whereof there were a dozen in that house

Fit to be stewards of both rent and land

Of any lord in England who would stand

Upon his own and live in manner good,

In honour, debtless (save his head were wood),

Or live as frugally as he might desire;

These men were able to have helped a shire

In any case that ever might befall;

And yet this manciple outguessed them all.

Second Course Menu

Blomanger: Rice, cow’s milk , chicken, and saffron.

Tart de Bry: A tart of eggs, cheese, sugar, saffron, salt, and ginger. A gluten-free version of this dish will be available.

Final Course

The Miller’s Portrait

(read by Maister Liam Mac an tSoir)

The miller was a stout churl, be it known,

Hardy and big of brawn and big of bone;

Which was well proved, for when he went on lam

At wrestling, never failed he of the ram.

He was a chunky fellow, broad of build;

He’d heave a door from hinges if he willed,

Or break it through, by running, with his head.

His beard, as any sow or fox, was red,

And broad it was as if it were a spade.

Upon the coping of his nose he had

A wart, and thereon stood a tuft of hairs,

Red as the bristles in an old sow’s ears;

His nostrils they were black and very wide.

A sword and buckler bore he by his side.

His mouth was like a furnace door for size.

He was a jester and could poetize,

But mostly all of sin and ribaldries.

He could steal corn and full thrice charge his fees;

And yet he had a thumb of gold, begad.

A white coat and blue hood he wore, this lad.

A bagpipe he could blow well, be it known,

And with that same he brought us out of town.
