A&S Faire, arts & sciences

This years’ Æthelmearc Arts & Sciences Faire and Queen’s Prize Tourney will be hosted by the Shire of Nithgaard (event details) Saturday, April 29, 2023. The format will be, as has been in the past, to have room for all who choose to display their works as well as enter in the Queen’s Prize Tourney. This sure will be a day to celebrate the artisans of our Sylvan Æthelmearc!

To show her appreciation to the artisans entering the Tourney, Her Royal Majesty Kallista will honor her favorite entry with the Queen’s Prize.

And by special request of our ÆthelBrewers, we were able to find a site that is dripping wet this year! You have no idea how excited and happy I am to accept alcoholic beverage entries on-site at this (any!) event – parking-lot car trunks and off-site hotel rooms are *something* but ideal it’s not!

(Then) Royal Majesties Byron and Ariella showing quite an interest in Lord Snorrie’s metal stamp project (or perhaps it was the coins?) at the A&S Faire and Prize Tourney in Blackstone Raids, 2022.

How does the A&S Faire differ from traditional competitions?

In contrast to the Kingdom A&S Championship as well as regional A&S competitions, the Æthelmearc A&S Faire is not a judged competition. It does not include judging rubrics nor a populace vote. The A&S Faire and Prize Tourney is set up with two components: an A&S display for anyone to share their amazing work with our populace and the Queen’s Prize Tourney, where, in addition, entrants are offered an opportunity to meet face to face with a panel of advisors. The A&S display is open to anyone who likes to showcase their work. No requirements, no theme, no pre-registration required.

The Queen’s Prize Tourney is intended to provide a platform for anybody to receive constructive feedback on their work in a friendly and non-competitive environment and to stimulate enthusiasm and motivation within our A&S community by sharing our art. It is an excellent opportunity for up-and-coming artisans to show their work and get to be known by more experienced artisans, as well as an opportunity for more experienced artisans to gain meaningful feedback about their projects.

Sponsors

The populace enjoying the A&S Faire and Prize Tourney entries, this one the Kievan Rus outfits by Lady Aurelie de la Rose, at Blackstone Raids 2022.

Participants in the Queen’s Prize Tourney must register ahead of time and must be sponsored by a Laurel or Fleur (or the equivalent to the Fleur from another kingdom), who should provide meaningful mentorship to the entrant. This can take many forms, and is dependent on the entrant and their sponsor. Some entrants seek a mentor who is much more engaged, with regular check-ins leading up to the Faire. Some entrants may not feel the need for in-depth engagement. This should be discussed before a sponsor/entrant agree on the sponsorship.

If an artisan wishes to enter but does not know of a sponsor to approach, we are glad to help match them up; likewise, if anyone would like to be a sponsor and is seeking an artisan(s), we will work to pair folks together.

Each sponsor is asked to bring a gift for each entrant they sponsor, so that each entrant receives a prize.

Entrants

Queen’s Prize Tourney entrants are allowed up to three items which should show a cohesive body of work. Entrants will have one or two groups of reviewers, scheduled for one hour each, who will ask questions about the item(s), documentation, the research process, etc. After each review session, the entrant will receive feedback forms from each reviewer. Written documentation is encouraged, but not required. To facilitate multiple advisors per review session, we ask that entrants bring three copies of their documentation. We encourage entrants to sit with their display for most of the day to give Their Majesties and the populace a chance to chat with them as well. We ask you to register via our online entrant form and to securely upload some basic info, some photos, and your documentation.

Youth artisans are highly encouraged to enter the display and/or the Queen’s Prize Tourney! The comment sheets for youth entrants will be different from those for adult entrants, designed with their age group in mind. Ideally, a youth entrant should be able to express how much of the project they did alone and how much they had help with, what the project is, how it works, and what they believe they learned throughout the process.

Advisors

We will need advisors for a successful A&S Faire. Advisors must be Fleurs or Laurels and are expected to spend a good part of the day in face-to-face advising of the entrants. In order to prepare for the day and match advisors with entrants, we ask that advisors preregister. Likewise, we ask sponsors to sign up via our form.

Feel free to approach us with any questions you may have by email or by finding us online. The registration deadline for in-person entry, advising, and sponsoring is April 27. The registration for online entry, advising, and sponsoring is April 20.

We hope to see many of you at the Arts & Sciences Faire and Queen’s Prize Tourney!

A&S, A&S Faire

It is with great pleasure that the Kingdom Office of Arts & Sciences can relay that Their Sylvan Majesties King Maynard von dem Steine and Queen Liadain ni Dheirdre Chaohamnaigh are pleased to announce the second installment of the Arts & Sciences Virtual Queen’s Prize Tourney!

The Prize Tourney will be run similar to last year, see the website for details. After the resounding success of Kingdom’s Champ, the Kingdom Office of Arts & Sciences is happy to offer face to face discussions between the candidates and their advisors.

Three Early 15th c. Bourrelet Headdresses [Best Documentation] by Lady Ilaria of Delftwood.

The intent of the Queen’s Prize Tourney is to provide a platform for anybody to receive constructive feedback on their A&S work in a friendly and non-competitive environment and to stimulate enthusiasm and motivation within our A&S community by sharing our art. Therefore, the Tourney is not a traditional competition. Instead, you be meet with a panel of advisors to share and discuss your entry to help you in grow your skill and knowledge… and helps us teach something new about your passion.

La seconde estampie royal, from the Manuscrit du Roi, on a vielle by Tiffany of Myrkfaelinn

With travel restrictions easing and small meetings with the proper recommended precautions being a possibility, we strongly encourage any and all entries that need to be sniffed, tasted, or quaffed for proper feedback! The online nature of the Tourney also gives us a chance to share your bardic entries and gives us the unique opportunity to give research papers the attention they deserve.

As is traditional, Their Royal Majesties will pick Their favorite entries. Additionally, to show our appreciation to those artisans who go the extra mile to document their projects in such depth and detail that not having them in hand does not seem a handicap, the Kingdom Office of Arts & Sciences will again sponsor an extra prize for documentation that went above and beyond the usual.

White Scarf Scroll [His Majesty’s Choice] by Gesa von Wellenstein.

Prior entry in another competition or display also does not disqualify you from entering: we love to see continued progress on existing projects.

Their Sylvan Majesties and the Kingdom Office of Arts & Sciences are all looking forward to inspiring new and existing work from our A&S community!

Details can be found here
Like last year, prospective participants are asked to fill out a web form with some basic info and (few) photographs of their work and their documentation. The main site has a link to the form or you can find it directly from here

The 2018 Faire in progress.

What makes The Arts & Sciences Faire and Queen’s Prize Tourney unique? It is not a competition: advisors provide feedback and critique, but there is no score; feedback is designed to be qualitative, not quantitative. The Arts & Sciences Faire is an opportunity for up and coming artisans to show their work and be interviewed by more experienced artisans, and is also an opportunity for more experienced artisans to gain meaningful feedback about their projects. To show her appreciation to the artisans entering the Arts & Sciences Faire, Her Royal Majesty will honor her favorite entry with the Queen’s Prize.

To encourage mentorship, each entrant must be sponsored by a Laurel or Fleur (or the equivalent to the Fleur from another kingdom). This can take many forms, and is dependent on the entrant and their sponsor.

The format of the Faire is similar to that for the Kingdom Arts & Sciences Championship; entrants are allowed up to three items which should show a cohesive body of work. Entrants will have two groups of advisors, scheduled for one hour each, who will ask questions about the item(s), documentation, the research process, etc. After each review session, the entrant will receive feedback forms from each advisor. Entrants will be given their review schedule in the morning, but should be prepared to sit with their display throughout the day. Written documentation is encouraged, but not required.

Youth artisans are highly encouraged to enter the Faire! The comment sheets for youth entrants will be different from those for adult entrants, designed with their age group in mind. We understand that there is usually parental help and guidance through the art process, which is a great way to help mentor a budding artisan! Ideally, a youth entrant should be able to express how much of the project they did alone and how much they had help with, what the project is, how it works, and what they believe they learned throughout the process.

Would you like to be an advisor to our entrants? We are looking for advisors for a successful Faire. Advisors must be Fleurs or Laurels and are expected to spend the better part of the day in face-to-face advising of the entrants.

  • You can sign up to be an advisor online and on-site, at the Arts & Science Faire.
  • In order to prepare for the day and match advisors with entrants, we ask that entrants preregister.
  • Likewise, we ask sponsors to sign up via our form.

Feel free to approach us with any questions you may have by checking our FAQ online, by email, or by finding us at your favorite event. We will be hosting A&S consultation tables at many future events throughout the Kingdom and look forward to seeing you there.

We hope to see many of you at the Arts & Sciences Faire!

In service,
Hrólfr and Elska, Kingdom Ministers of Arts & Sciences

A&S Faire, Court Report, Queen's Prize Tourney, Rhydderich Hael

The account of the Court of Sven and Siobhan, King and Queen of Æthelmearc at the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Faire and Queen’s Prize Tournament held on June 23, AS 53 (2018), hosted by the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael, as reported by Baroness Ekaterina Volkova, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald, assisted by THL Zofia Kowalewska, Ice Dragon Pursuivant.

Their Majesties gave leave to Their Excellencies of the Rhydderich Hael to hold their court.

His Majesty then spoke of the wonderful day and how excited He was to see so many participants in the Faire showing off their skills.

THL Sophie Davenport, Silver Buccle Herald was invited into court. She informed Their Majesties that she had been lacking a deputy to cover Region 4 of the Kingdom but had found a suitable applicant. THL Zofia Kowalewska was then invested as White Horn Herald. THL Sophie then announced that the regions 3 and 5 are also in need of a deputy and to please contact her if you are interested in the positions.

THL Padraig o’Branduibh was the called into court. His Majesty spoke of skill and dedication on the archery and thrown weapon ranges as well as acts of skill with rapier that has all been attributed to Padraig. For this he was inducted into the Order of the Golden Alce. Scroll by THL Eleanore Godwin.

Their Majesties then invited Lady Thalia Papillon before them. Her Majesty spoke of reports of a quiet and unassuming lady who is fierce with bow and arrow, is deadly upon the rapier field and has taken to learning the duties of a Mistress of the Lists. All that could not go unrewarded and she was added to the ranks of the Order of the Golden Alce.

Those members of the Order of the Golden Alce were asked to stand so that the populace could see if there were any who were not standing but should be included into the order. Her Majesty then asked that if an oversight was seen, to please write in letters of recommendation.

The members of the Silver Sycamore present were asked to come forth. Her Majesty spoke of the arts and the youth of the Kingdom and how the two go well together. She then noticed that there was one who had not come forward with the order. Wentliana Verch Meuric was called forth. Her Majesty said she had seen this young woman helping in the kitchen throughout the day, has researched and taught classes on period “fizzy” drinks. For this she was inducted to the order. Scroll by Isabella Montoya.

All children present were then called forth. Their Majesties understood that sometimes court can be hard to pay attention to, so they provided a box in the back of the hall from which each child could pick out one toy to play with. They were then asked to calmly walk back and make their selections.

Their Majesties inducted Eadaoin Gaelach Rua into the Order of the Sycamore in absentia for her skill in the bardic arts. Scroll by Lady Felice de Thornton.

Baroness Theresa du Domremy was then invited into court. Her Majesty spoke of this lady’s sill in documenting, creating and wearing of hat. For all this and more she was added to the Order of the Sycamore.

The Order of the Sycamore was then asked to stand so all may see who present should be recommended to the Royalty for recognition.

For her dedicated service to the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael as webminister and dance mistress, Lady Manarola was inducted into the Order of the Keystone in absentia. Scroll by THL Aibell Shuluaine.

The presence of THL Hrolfr a Fjarfelli was demanded. When he presented himself, Her Majesty spoke of all the work he is doing in the Dominion of Myrkfaellin as exchequer, archery marshal, your combat marshal in training, autocrat and anywhere else help is needed. For all this he was inducted into the Order of the Keystone. Scroll by THL Mairghread Stiobhard inghean ui Choinne.

Members of the Order of the Keystone were then asked to stand for the populace.

His Majesty then spoke of all the beautiful works of art that Their Majesties are privileged to give out at every court and it is the dedication and generosity of the scribes of the Kingdom that enables that to happen. He then asked that all scribes who had produced a scroll since the beginning of the year to stand and be thanked.

Baroness Ekaterina Volkova, event autocrat, was then called into court. She thanked all those who attended as well as those who volunteered their time to help make the event happen.

THL Renata Rouge, Kingdom A&S Minister, was called forth to speak of the activities of the Faire. She thanked all for coming and especially those that volunteered to act as assessors throughout the day. There were even some from another Kingdom who came just to assist with the assessing. She then spoke of those who put their work out for others to see and comment on. 16 individuals entered the Faire, 6 of whom had never done so before. These individuals were then called so that they could receive a gift from their sponsors.

It was then announced that THL Astridr vigaskegg had been selected as Populace Choice for her display that included period jello shots, candied egg yolks and cheesecake.

Her Majesty then spoke of how one of the duties of Queen is to be Patroness of the Arts and she had great fun visiting with all the entrants and learning about their arts. But there was one that moved her and she announced that THL Abigail Kelhoge was selected for the Queen’s Prize for her display and research into the making of parchment from animal hides. Scroll by Lord Rhys Penbras ap Dafydd.

Lady Fionnghuala Leasa na Linne then asked for time and presented Their Majesties with a herd of camels that she hoped would help to entertain the children of the Sylvan Lands.

Her Majesty then said that another great joy she has is finding those who throughout the day inspire her to new heights. On this day she chose Nycaise D’ozier la Tailleresse, called Tailor, as her inspiration for her dedication to authenticity in clothing.

A&S Faire, Rhydderich Hael

A&S display at the Maker Faire.

From the Minister of A&S, THL Renata Rouge, and Faire Autocrat Mistress Ekaterina Volkova:

Two more days to register for the Æthelmearc Arts & Sciences Faire and Queen’s Prize Tourney!

But Ren, my documentation isn’t done. I don’t know what I need to put in it…

STOP. Take a deep breathe, my friend. This is a lower-stress A&S event. It isn’t Ice Dragon; you will not lose points because of a lack of documentation. In fact, this is the perfect opportunity to get feedback from experienced artisans in the Kingdom about how to write your documentation. And if you are not as strong with your writing skills, you get to TALK about your project, process, and arts in a supportive, encouraging environment.

But Ren, my arts are just not good enough!!

SAYS WHO? What better way to get suggestions on how to take it to the next level than a consultation with experienced artisans? We’ve had past entrants who have been in the SCA less than a year, peers, and everyone in between. Every artisan is welcome and every artisan is respected, and I guarantee that every one of us other artisans have felt “not good enough,” too.

But Ren, my project isn’t finished!!

That’s completely okay — in-process projects are just fine! You will be getting feedback before the project is finished, which can greatly help you in the next steps.

Okay, I’m almost convinced. Is it difficult to register?

The hardest part is hitting send, I promise.
Email me your name, local group, sponsor name (if you don’t have one, I have several who have been looking for artisans just like you!) and what art you are entering.

For more about the event, see the A&S website here and the Kingdom event announcement here.

For those who also enjoy martial activities, there will be fencing and fighting at the event. Because this is first and foremost an Arts and Sciences event, any gentle wishing to put on armor of any kind is required to put a piece of art or science that that have made on display.  This does not enter them into the Faire, but does encourage participation in the Arts and Sciences.  You must put your item on display before checking in with the MoL and she will require proof of your display.  Limited art supplies will be available day of the event, but please consider bringing something with you.

The site is pet friendly!  However, please be advised that while pets are allowed on the grounds and in the hall, it is requested that all animals be leashed and kept away from the kitchen and dayboard.   Please pick up after your animal. The autocrat reserves the right to ask all ill-behaved animals to leave.

Schedule:

  • 8:30 am: site opens
  • 9 am: Faire/QPT check-in open
  • 10 am: Faire Consultation starts, lists open
  • 12 pm: Lunch break
  • 1 pm: Consultation resumes
  • 3 pm: Consultation ends
  • 3:15 to 4 pm: Fleur meeting
  • 4  to 4:45 pm: Laurel Meeting
  • 4 pm: Dayboard ends, Faire/displays tear-down, lists close
  • 5:15 pm: Court
  • 7 pm: Site closes
See here for the lunch menu.

A&S Faire

Unto the gentle folk of Æthelmearc, Good Greetings!

Now that the Ice Dragon has passed us by, as we prepare for the Coronation of Timothy & Gabrielle, and as Spring is upon us, it is time for the 2nd Annual Æthelmearc Arts & Sciences Faire!

This celebration of the Arts & Sciences will be held on 6 May in the Shire of Nithgaard. It will feature a large are for artisans of all levels to display their work and to share in their knowledge.

This year will also see the 2nd Annual Queens Prize Tourney. While there are no scores and no winner, the Tourney does give the lesser-known and recognized artisans of Æthelmearc an opportunity to display their work and to have face-to-face advice from the Fleurs and Laurels. It is a low-pressure opportunity to experience the face-to-face judging that is used in Kingdom A&S Championship held in the Fall.

We hope that many artisans will avail themselves of this opportunity to learn and teach.

Details on the Faire and The Queens Prize Tourney can be found here. There you will find the event announcement, an FAQ sheets, and registration forms for the QPT.

Of course, there will be also be an opportunity for fencers and fighters to have some fun outside of the hall.

We hope to see many of you at the Faire!

In service,
Fridrikr & Orianna, KMOAS

A&S Faire, Nithgaard

On May 6th, the Shire of Nithgaard will host the second Æthelmearc Arts & Sciences Faire. This will be a day to celebrate the artisans our Sylvan Kingdom. We will have room for all who choose to do so to display their works.nithgaard

The A&S Faire web page can be found here.

We will also be running the second annual Queen’s Prize Tourney, for those who hold a Grant of Arms level award or lower in the Arts & Sciences. The tourney does not have scores or a winner, but offers those who enter advice from members of the Orders of the Laurel and the Fleur.

It is our hope that the Queen’s Prize Tourney will give these artisans the opportunity to both learn and teach, and will give the Kingdom an opportunity to see their work. Each entrant is required to be sponsored by a member of the Laurel or the Fleur. Each entrant is required to be present at the event. Each sponsor is asked to provide a small thank you gift to each of the entrants he or she sponsors.

We will need advisors (previously called “judges”) for the tourney. Advisors must be Fleurs or Laurels and are expected to spend the better part of the day in face-to-face advising of the entrants. You can sign up to be an advisor at the A&S Faire website.

For those of a more martial inclination, there will be outside areas available for fighting and fencing during the day.

The web page contains links to:

  1. the event announcement
  2. an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) sheet concerning the event and Queen’s Prize Tourney
  3. registration forms for Entrants and Sponsors in the Queen’s Prize Tourney and also for Advisors
  4. a form for Entrants seeking Sponsors to sponsor them
  5. a form for Sponsors seeking Entrants to sponsor.

We hope to see many of you at the A&S Faire!

In service,
Fridrikr & Orianna
Kingdom Ministers of Arts & Sciences
