Blackstone Mountain, Blackstone Raids, Court Report

Documented from the Rolls and Files of the Coram Regibus of Thomas Byron II Rex and Ariella II Regina, King and Queen of Æthelmearc: Being a True Record of the Business of Their Royal Court at Blackstone Raid XXIX, 23 April, Anno Societatis LVI, in the Barony of Blackstone Mountain. As recorded by Gwendolyn the Graceful, Brehyres, Meistr-y-gân, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald, assisted by The Honorable Lady Kathryn MacLuing, Millrind Herald.

King Byron and Queen Ariella, accompanied by Cunedda Kell and Alanna of the Horseclans, Baron and Baroness of Blackstone Mountain, invited Their Cousins, Pietro Nicolo da San Tebaldo and Aurelia Rosetti, Barone and Baronessa of the Cleftlands, to join Them in Court.

Their Majesties then sent the kingdom’s youth in pursuit of toys from Lady Forevelth Dunde.

The Crowns welcomed those gentles attending their first Royal Court, whereupon Her Majesty presented them each with a coin of the reign.

Their Majesties gladly received words of friendship from Their Royal Cousins Midrealm, King Ullr and Queen Annalise, brought to Them by the Barone and Baronessa Cleftlands.

Understanding that Baron Ichijo Honen and Baroness Cerridwen de Skeine, having entered retirement, still had business to attend, Their Majesties invited Their Excellencies to join Their Court. Their Majesties then empowered Baron Ichijo and Baroness Cerridwen temporarily with the authority of Blackstone Mountain, and gave unto them and their successors, Baron Cunedda and Baroness Alanna, leave to perform the business of both of their courts.

At the conclusion of the Court(s) Baronial, Their Majesties received Master Hrolfr a Fjarfelli to announce the results of the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Faire. Master Hrolfr shared that the populace had voted for Baron Snorri skyti Bjarnarson and The Honorable Lady Astriðr Vigaskegg in equal measures. Their Majesties also announced that Lady Avitoria Vidua had earned the Queen’s Prize, and Lady Aurelie de la Rose had won the King’s Prize.

Their Majesties summoned Caulder Rustningsmannen before them. Praising his skills, especially in the fields of leatherwork, armoring, and fighting, They were moved to Award him Arms. Scroll by Lady Forveleth Dunde.

Their Majesties next requested that Master Morien MacBain present himself to the Court in his capacity as half of the Sylvan Bard dynamic duo. Master Morien entertained the populace with his pair of poems dedicated to His Majesty and Her Majesty, to great acclaim.

Next did the Crowns desire to speak with Biarna of Blackstone. Speaking with admiration for her scribal arts, They saw fit to name her to the nobility, and Award her Arms. Scroll by The Honorable Lady Eleanore Godwin.

Their Majesties brought Lugaid Ó Cellaigh before them to speak with him of his service. Noting that his quiet and constant effort was worthy of recognition, They were moved to Award him Arms. Scroll by Master Dagonell of Collingwood, the Juggler.

Following this, Their Majesties sought Lord Samuel of Great Oaks and Alexander O’Faolain. Their Majesties recounted again how the quick action, selflessness, and bravery of these two gentles, at the Tournament of the White Hart, saved the life of a child. For this singular act of courage and chivalry, Their Majesties bestowed upon each of them the Golden Escarbuncle.

Their Majesties next called forward Gnæus Iulius Celsus. Praising Celsus’ skills with thrown weapons, and the bow, They were well pleased to Award him Arms. Scroll by Baron Robaird O’Suillheabhain, known as Brother Bobby.

Hobbit of Blackstone was next brought into the Royal Presence.Their Majesties took note of his willingness to help at events, including setup and teardown. In recognition of these noble acts, They saw fit to Award him Arms. Promissory Scroll by Lady Murdia Drusilla Vellia Portia.

Their Majesties desired that Lorelei of Blackstone attend Them. In recognition of her remarkable artistic skills in one so young, They named her a Companion of the Order of the Silver Sycamore. Scroll forthcoming.

Her Majesty sought Richard the Black to recognize his dedication to fighting, in spite of the day’s heat, and name him her inspiration of the day.

Their Majesties invited all scribes who contributed to the Court that day to take a selection from the scribal “goodie basket” in gratitude for their skills and in hope that it will assist them in future creations. Their Majesties further thanked all who attended and made the day memorable.

There being no further business, Court was closed.

Faithfully Submitted,

Gwendolyn the Graceful, Brehyres (OL)

Blackstone Raids, Covid-19

Good morning!

We got lucky.

After discussions with his Grace, Duke Christopher, Deputy Kingdom Seneschal for Pandemics, and with Roane County, WV going back into Moderate (thank you Universe!!), folks are allowed back in the cabins to sleep inside. Masks are no longer required inside for those who are vaccinated. (Unvaccinated folks are required to wear masks at all times at events.)

Again, all groups who are in the cabins had to submit safety plans to the Autocrat and are still *required* to keep to those plans.

Have a lovely and safe weekend, folks.

Blackstone Mountain, Blackstone Raids, Covid-19

From the Kingdom Seneschale regarding Blackstone Raid:

Greetings from Illadore,

After discussion with SCA Corporate, it has been decided that *UNLESS* the county makes it back to Moderate or Low transmission (as determined by the CDC Covid County Tracker for Transmission), folks **will not** be allowed to sleep inside in cabins (unless they are single families and already living together.)

Individuals can bring tents and put them up on the property. Please contact the local Autocrat if you need more information. There are also local hotels still available within a half hour of the site as well.

I know this is not ideal. It is our hope that Roane County, WV’s numbers will improve by Thursday.

Thank you,
Illadore de Bedegrayne
Kingdom Seneschal

Blackstone Mountain, Blackstone Raids

Herein begins the Record of the Court of Gareth and Juliana, 2nd of Their Name, at Blackstone Raids, in the Barony of Blackstone Mountain, April 26, AS 53, as reported by Maighster Kieran MacRae, with the assistance of The Honorable Lady Kathryn MacLuing and Lady Nichola Beese.

First Morning Court:

Court was held outside on the ports of the Hall as the sun sank into the West. As the populace stood, His Majesty Gareth asked His Lordship Oliver Sutton be called forth. Clad in white, THL Oliver was escorted forth by his household. His Majesty spoke brieflly to Oliver, then called for the Order of the Chivalry. His Majesty spoke of what makes a Knight is the gentle who strove for it, and that to him, THL Oliver was already a knight in thought and deed. He then asked the assembled Chivalry to take Oliver away.

Yet, Oliver’s knight, Sir Thorgrim Skullsplitter asked Their Majesties for a moment. He reminded Oliver that the journey they started together was now complete, and he could teach Oliver no more. Oliver was divested of his squire’s belt and chain, but Sir Thorgrim then handed the belt back, telling Oliver to pass it to his first squire, after adding Oliver’s coat of arms to the belt and continuing the lineage.

Then Oliver was led away, and the Court of Their Majesties was suspended.

Second Morning Court:

Court was reopened Saturday, April 27, AS 53 at the conclusion of the Gage Meet ‘n Beat held on the field that morning. THL Oliver Sutton was called back into court, and was asked by His Majesty if he had considered his decision to join the Noble Order of the Chivalry. THL Oliver agreed that it was his decision to be elevated.

Upon the request of His Majesty to hear from the Nobles who would speak on Oliver’s behalf, the following came forward:

  • His Grace Timothy of Arindale sent words as a Royal Peer, conveyed by Sir Kadan Chakalgan, speaking of Oliver’s commitment to family.
  • Maighster Kieran MacRae spoke as Laurel, speaking to Oliver’s skill as a scribe.
  • Master Morien MacBain spoke as Pelican, and began listing the seven deadly sins, with which we are all familiar, but noted that not once did he see an example of sloth in Oliver.
  • Master Clewin Kupferhelbelinc spoke as Master of Defense, and extolled Oliver’s ability to maintain a sense of fun and joy along his martial path.
  • Sir Throgrim Skullsplitter spoke as Oliver’s Knight. He spoke of his justice and franchise, and the strength of courage and bravery to do what needs to be done, just because it needs to be done.

At the conclusion of all worthies speaking on Oliver’s behalf, Oliver was presented with spurs, a white belt bearing the lineage of his knights, the ancestral knight’s chain, with its lineage being read by Sir Finn O’Shannon, along with two other knight’s chains from his household and his consort. Oliver then was dubbed to be a Knight by His Majesty Gareth, and as there was no scroll yet, Maighster Kieran provided words. Sir Oliver Sutton was then announced to the populace, and there was much rejoicing.

The Court of Their Majesties was then suspended.

Evening Court:

Upon reopening of court later that evening, Their Majesties gave leave to Their Excellencies Ichijo and Cerridwen to hold Their Baronial Court.

At the conclusion of Their Excellencies’ Court, the Royal Court of Their Majesties was resumed.

Their Majesties called the children assembled to come forward, and then Crotos was called to take the toy chest and get a head start before those assembled youth descended upon him for the riches contained therein.

Their Majesties then called forward all those for whom it was their first event, or first event with a Royal Court, so that they may be thanked personally for their attendance, and given a handmade ceramic cup to remember their day.

Their Majesties called for Fina the Huntress to come before them. Her work as a newly warranted Mistress of the Lists, and helpfulness at events in general had caught their attention, and thus she was awarded Arms. Scroll limned by Baroness Shirin al-Sussiyya and illuminated by Baron Caleb Reynolds.

Their Majesties next invited Jackey of Sable Maul to come forward. For her service water bearing on the melee field, and her attention to taking care of AEthelmearc’s army, she was awarded Arms. Scroll by Lady Murdia Drusilla Vettia Portia.

Cedric de Lothian was then called by Their Majesties and given an award of Arms for his work in the archery community, having become a marshal and procuring traditional targets for the populace to hone their skills. Scroll by Baroness Graidhne ni Ruaidh.

Their Majesties next invited Rafe Glydthir to come forward and be recognized for his martial skills on the heavy weapons field. He has also been seen to be very helpful out of armor. He was thusly awarded Arms. Scroll by Master Ælric Ravenshaw.

Their Majesties called for Erzabet Fauconneau to come forward and be recognized for her skill in creating pottery, mugs, tasting cups, and glazes to use on them, adding beauty to the kingdom. She was awarded a Sycamore in recognition. Illumination artist unknown, calligraphy by Baroness Shirin al-Sussiyya.

Those members of the Order of the Sycamore were asked to stand, to see what good company the new inductees were in, as well as look at those not standing and determine if a letter recommending them should be made to grow the order even further.

Their Majesties called forth Sir Marek Viacheldrago before them, and extolled him on his period correct Danish armor, and his encouragement of others to likewise have period correct Danish armor. For these efforts Their Majesties inducted Sir Marek into the Order of the Golden Stirrup. Scroll by Baroness Graidhne ni Ruaidh.

For these noble deeds, he was inducted into the Order of the Cornelian. Scroll by Aurelia Argentia Prima.

Their Majesties wished THL Kathryn MacLuing to come before them from behind the dais. They noted how Kathryn constantly provided scroll blanks, largess, for both the Barony of Blackstone and the Kingdom for no other reason than it just needed to get done. She also is a hard working herald, volunteering time and energy to help Court run without a hitch. For this she was awarded the Æthelmearc Award of Excellence. Scroll forthcoming.

Their Majesties then gave leave for Lady McKenna Henderson to speak of one who has been very important to her, who has mentored her, and been like a father figure to her. Their Majesties then gave permission for her to bring Master Alaxandair O’Conchobhair before them. Master Alaxandair was praised for his years …and years… of service as webminister for the barony, kingdom, and Society, and also has helped with numerous ‘magical’ technological issues when needed. He is known for stepping up when it is required to do so, and Their Majesties would make him a Baron of Their Court this day. Scroll by Sebastienne la Rousse.

Lady McKenna Henderson tried to leave, but Their Majesties would have none of that. McKenna nervously listened as Their Majesties spoke of her hard work taking care of matters involving the royalty and the Æthelmearc Army. She serves when called to do so and does not shy away from responsibility. Her longtime service was recognized as Their Majesties made her a Baroness of Their Court as well.

Her Majesty then asked that THLord Deryk Archer to come forth. Her Majesty thanked him for the archery targets that She so enjoyed that day. She was also advised that Lord Deryk was aided all day in keeping records and scoring all day by Torvi fra Bergstopt of the Shire of Montevale and asked him to bring her to the court. Her Majesty named them both Her inspiration of the day and bestowed upon each a Golden Escarbuncle.

Blackstone Raids

Documented from the Rolls and Files of the Coram Regibus of Thomas Byron Rex and Ariella Regina, King and Queen of Æthelmearc: Being a True Record of the Business of Their Royal Court at Blackstone Raid XXV, 30 April, Anno Societatis L, in the Barony of Blackstone Mountain. As recorded by Gwendolyn the Graceful, Brehyres, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald, with the assistance of Lady Katherine McClung, Millrind Herald, and Lord Arias Beltran del Valle, and Baroness Anastasie de Lamoure, Silent Herald.

Their Majesties invited forward those children in attendance. With the permission of their parents, the children were encouraged to see Lady Astrid vigaskegg for activities and treats to amuse them during Court.

Their Majesties brought before Them Baron Ichijo Honen and Baroness Cerridwen de Skeine. Before giving them leave to conduct the business of their Baronial Court, Their Majesties demanded that the Baron and Baroness duly swear their fealty to the Crown. Such fealty being given and received to Their Majesties’ satisfaction, Their Excellencies held their court.

Their Majesties next invited Count Sir Jehan de la Marche to approach. His Excellency offered his own personal fealty to the Crown, and thereupon asked the Court to witness as he renewed his relationship with Master Morien MacBain as both squire and apprentice.

Their Majesties then received Octavius Flavus, a visitor from distant lands. This gentle carried with him words of wisdom from a far shire, which he had transformed into a scroll of his own illumination, calligraphed by Beatrix. Their Majesties accepted it with pleasure and promised to provide Their own message for Octavius to take with him on the next leg of his continuing journey.

Their Majesties next sought Lord Borislav of Novogord. Her Majesty spoke of the many steps fighters must take to perfect their armor and weapons, the dedication necessary to fight in all weathers and at all times, and the skill developed over time in the face of such dedication. In recognition of Borislav’s efforts and skills, They named him a Companion of the Golden Alce. Scroll forthcoming.

Next Their Majesties summoned The Honorable Lord Tegrinus de Rhina, and questioned him regarding his service to his group as Knight Marshal, as well as performing setup, teardown, and other labors for groups throughout the kingdom. To recognize his long service, They named him a Companion of the Keystone. Scroll by Misress Arianna of Wynthrope.

Lady Crystal MacUrsus was brought before Their Majesties, who noted her labors on behalf of events such as the Tournament of the White Hart and others in her group. Gremian Ulfhednar was next summoned to attend Their Majesties. Again, Their Majesties remarked on the service he provided to White Hart and other events, performing setup and cleanup alike. Being moved by reports of his dedication, Their Majesties saw fit to name him a Companion of the Order of the Keystone, thus Awarding him Arms. Scroll by Mistress Maria Christina de Cordoba.

Their Majesties called for Tiberius of Sylvan Glen, who was also not in attendance. Once more, Dame Hrefna Úlfarvinnsdóttir came forward to carry Their words of praise to him, as well as Their wish to name him a Companion of the Silver Buccle. Scroll by Baroness Ekaterina Volkova.

Then was Lady Onora Inghean ui Donmhnaill asked to attend Their Majesties. Their Majesties praised this noble lady’s clothing and embroidery, including the clothes she was wearing at the time. Faced with the obvious evidence of her skills, and knowing the reports of her good works, Their Majesties saw fit to name her a Companion of the Sycamore. Scroll by Baroness Ekaterina Volkova.

Their Majesties next required The Honorable Lord Gareth Whytebull to enter Their presence. They spoke of His Lordship’s constant service to his Barony, region, and the fighting community as a whole. Mindful of the acclaim of others to this same accomplishment, Their Majesties called before Them Their Order of the Millrind and inducted him into its rolls. Scroll by Meisterin Fredeburg von Katzenellenbogen.

Before releasing the Order, Their Majesties called for Lady Odette D’Arques to attend Them.  This lady’s service as exchequer, cook, and housing coordinator were among the many reasons Their Majesties were moved to Grant her Arms and name her also a Companion of the Millrind. Scroll by Baroness Alexandra di Campagnella.

Her Majesty then spoke of the one who inspired Her on this day: Bear, who had newly authorized as a Thrown Weapons marshal. He had supplied the butts for the day’s range and spoken with Her Majesty of his plans to transform his estates into an archery and thrown weapons range for all. Her Majesty presented him with Her token in appreciation for the inspiration he provided.

Their Majesties also thanked the event staff who made the day so enjoyable for all, and the cooks who provided food for Them despite additional restrictions and constraints governing Their Majesties’ diet on the day.

Their Majesties also thanked all scribes and regalia wrights who contributed their talents and largesse to enhance the Court’s proceedings. They further invited any and all who might take up the scribes’ pen to speak with or contact the Sylvan Signet, as the Scribes of Æthelmearc have particular need of reinforcements and wish to grow their community again.

There being no further business, Their Majesties’ Court was closed.

Faithfully Submitted,

Gwendolyn the Graceful, Brehyres

Blackstone Raids, Thanks, Their Majesties

Their Royal Majesties have asked the Gazette to share the following with the populace:

Unto the Hospitable Barony of Blackstone Mountain and the Staff of Blackstone Raids Do Byron and Ariella, Rex et Regina, send sincere thanks!

We greatly enjoyed our time at your event last weekend and observed many enjoying the same! Your preparations for Us were extensive with food, drink, and accommodations beyond anything we might expect. Thank you to those who provided such delicious food all weekend and carefully followed our Whims. Having the tent set up on the field as well as all ranges and the battlefield was wonderful. Event staff was courteous and helpful to Us and our Entourage, even while running such a large and long event. We spoke with neighbors from other Kingdoms — Atlantia, the Midrealm, and the West — who were also smiling and having a great time. Our Kingdom is proud of how you host Blackstone Raids!

Yours,
Byron, Rex
Ariella, Regina

Documented from the Scrolls of the Reign of Timothy & Gabrielle II, King and Queen of Æthelmearc: the Business of His Majesty’s Court at Blackstone Raids XXIV in the Barony of Blackstone Mountain, 25 April Anno Societatis XLIX, accompanied by Their Excellencies Ichijo and Cerridwen, Baron and Baroness of Blackstone Mountain. As recorded by Their Silver Buccle Herald, Kameshima-kyō Zentarō Umakai, with the assistance of Lord Arias Beltran del Valle.

In the afternoon, on the field:

His Majesty spoke at some length of the pride he felt at the skill and prowess of the Æthelmearc army, and of the virtues of chivalry that so many of them showed. In particular, he called forth THL Arnþorr inn sterki, whose displays of chivalry were an example to many. His Majesty then summoned his Order of Chivalry and commanded THL Arnþorr to choose a time and place where he might sit vigil and contemplate elevation to that Order. Scroll forthcoming.

His Majesty invited Lord Hartmann’s lady, Lady Ragna Haakonardottir of Skara, to join her lord in Court. Baron Edward Harbinger, Æthelmearc’s Archer General, came forward to announce that the Archery Peerage Fundraiser had raised $170 for the Kingdom Storage Trailer fund.

While He had Baron Edward in His Court, His Majesty implored His populace to take up bows and crossbows, for there was a very real possibility that the victor in the upcoming Pennsic War would be decided by the Mass Populace Archery Shoots, and Æthelmearc will need all the archers that she can muster.

There being no further business, His Majesty’s Court was closed.

Announcements, Æthelmearc, Blackstone Raids, Chirurgeonate

Greetings Æthelmearc Army,

In your preparations for Blackstone Raids on the weekend of April 24-26, I would like to ask something of you. Every year Baroness Constance and the waterbearing staff make very sure that there is hydration available. The staff of Blackstone Raids provides a budget for water and supplies for the water bearers which goes against the bottom line of running the event.

So here is my challenge to the fighters, fencers, archers and throwers of the kingdom. In your packing, plan to bring something to help the staff.

What is needed?Waterbearers

  • Gallon jugs of water
  • Jars of Pickles
  • Bags of Oranges
  • Bags or bins of pretzels
  • Watermelon/Grapes

If you arrive Thursday or Friday you can drop them at the main lodge. If you arrive Saturday you can drop them off at the water bearers tent on the battle field.

Help support the whole army and keep them well-nourished and hydrated!!

 In Service,

Baron Liam
Deputy Commander
Aethelwald
