Blackstone Mountain, Court Reports, Crown Tournament

Documented from the Rolls and Files of the Coram Regibus of Thomas Byron II Rex and Ariella II Regina, King and Queen of Æthelmearc: Being a True Record of the Business of Their Royal Court at Their Crown Tournament, 7 May, Anno Societatis LVII, in the Barony of Blackstone Mountain. As recorded by Gwendolyn the Graceful, Brehyres, Meistr-y-gân, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald, assisted by Drotinn jǫrundr hinn rotinn, Silver Buccle Herald.

Prior to opening the Procession, King Byron and Queen Ariella requested the presence of all combatants and consorts. Their Majesties expressed Their joy that all had been able to attend, despite the hazards of weather, and that Their own trek had deepened Their appreciation for the commitment already demonstrated by all who had persevered to be present.

Their Majesties also desired more personal words with The Honorable Lord Angus the Bull and his consort, Agnes Zwei Brücken. Finding it improper that a gentle of such grace as she should enter the tournament without title, Their Majesties were pleased to Award her Arms, so that she could further inspire as a member of the nobility. Scroll forthcoming. Court was then suspended.

At the conclusion of the Tournament, one stood victorious: Arnᚦorr inn Sterki. His Majesty placed the Heir’s crown upon Arnᚦorr’s brow, investing him with the office of Prince. Their Majesties passed unto Prince Arnᚦorr the crown of the consort, with which His Highness crowned his lady Ceinrech na Hinnsi, that she be known henceforth as Princess. The Heirs made oath of fealty to the Crown, and Court was once again suspended.

In the evening, Their Majesties and Their Highnesses, accompanied by Cunedda Kell and Alana of the Horseclans, Baron and Baroness of Blackstone Mountain, entreated Lorelei of Blackstone to allow the youth of the kingdom to pursue her for toys to pass the time in Court.

Their Majesties then extended leave to Baroness Alana, as Event Steward, to address the populace and offer thanks to all who worked, many at very short notice, to make the event a success. She shared the good news that Rose, who had been waylaid on her journey the night before, was home and safe once more. Their Majesties asked Her Excellency to pass on the well wishes of the Kingdom and the gratitude of the populace that she suffered no lasting harm.

Their Majesties invited Countess Margerite to speak on behalf of the Ladies of the Rose and Garnet. Her Excellency observed that the tournament had been a day full of many acts of chivalry, including The Honorable Lord Willem MacLear, who received a token from her hand. Her Highness also called forward Lord Bjarki Rikardson, to present him with Her token in recognition of his displays of honor upon the field. Her Excellency Margerite went on to say that there was one whose conduct was so surpassing exemplary that he was the clear choice to bear the Shield of Chivalry: The Honorable Lord Angus the Bull. Thus, with the Crown’s thanks, Posadik Zvonimir Zavodchikov was able to pass the Shield unto His Lordship Angus, and was relieved of his dutiful service as its former bearer.

Next, Their Majesties bade Thorin Marekson to present himself before Them. Citing his courteous demeanor and constantly helpful manner, They were moved to Award him Arms. Scroll illumination by The Honorable Lady Sumayya al-Ghaziyya, with wording and calligraphy by Mistress Illadore de Bedegrayne.

Their Majesties also sought Islief Marekson to speak with him of his equally unfailing service and courtly consideration. Judging his conduct in all ways to be that of a noble, They declared it right and proper that he, too, be Awarded Arms. Scroll by Nikolai Vasiliev Malkovich.

Following this, Their Majesties requested the presence of Viscount Sir Bear the Wallsbane, representing himself, Duke Malcolm MacEoghan, and Duchess Ilish O’Donovan. His Majesty remarked upon the perennial and indispensable nature of their bi-annual publication, “Bear’s Betting Man’s Guide to Crown Tourney.” Knowing that Their Majesties were not alone in thinking these pamphlets a great boon to the Kingdom, They bestowed upon His Excellency and Their Graces the Award of Excellence, in token of which, His Majesty presented them each with a deck of tarot to aid in their divinations, and pouches containing the collected coins struck for all the Crown Tournaments to date, to assist in the application of their speculative pursuits.

Their Majesties then desired that Lady Rannveigr Hrajshvelgsneys Alfvinsdottir make herself present to Them. Praising her many, years of service, not only in Æthelmearc but in the Midrealm, not only in Blackstone Mountain but in Port Oasis, not only as server, tollner, or steward, but in kitchens, classrooms, and everywhere between, and mindful of her service from an early age, They named her a Companion of the Order of the Keystone. Scroll forthcoming.

Their Majesties next wished to be attended by Lady Brienne Lachlan the Scorned, to speak to her also of the service she gives freely and joyfully to all. Her work capturing images from court, field, and hall, as well as the many hours she has spent assisting her Barony as its chatelaine, recommended her to Their Majesties and moved Them to create her a Companion of the Order of the Keystone. Scroll by The Honorable Lady Eleanore Godwin.

Lord Nicolo Loredan da Venesia was next called before the Royal Presence. To Nicolo, Their Majesties spoke of his dedication to the art of defense, both as practical skill and in its careful study and historical provenance. In recognition of his research and artistry in historical rapier study, They named him a Companion of the Order of the Sycamore. Scroll by The Honorable Lady Gesa von Wellenstein on wording by Baron Caleb Reynolds.

Their Majesties then welcomed Baroness Sigrid Schreiber into Their Presence. They noted her propitious skill in the art of portraiture, and her long dedication to her skills’ perfection. Understanding that there were others who had taken similar note of Her Excellency’s talent, They called for Their Noble Order of the Fleur D’Æthelmearc to witness the induction of their newest Companion. Scroll by The Honorable Lady Nichola Beese.

At this time, Their Majesties required the attendance of Their Noble Order of the Millrind. Noting with pleasure that many, many members of the populace were among this number, They nevertheless desired to bring additional Companions forward to join this august body:

First, They called upon Sir Beatrix Krieger, for her unfailing willingness to leap in and help wherever needed. Scroll wording by Master Po Silvertop, calligraphy by Master Jon Blaecstan, and illumination by Maîtresse Melisandre of the Gryphon Wood.

Next, They desired Lady Thalia Papillon to step forward, and Granted her Arms as a Companion of the Millrind for her varied forms of service, including archery marshal, mistress of lists, event steward, and both guard and retainer to the Courts of Æthelmearc. Scroll by The Honorable Lady Gesa von Wellenstein on wording by Baron Caleb Reynolds.

Finally, but not least, They entreated Baron Cunedda and Baroness Alana to join the Order as its Companions for their unflagging service to the Barony of Blackstone Mountain, as custodians of the Barony and as its leaders – twice. Promissory scrolls a work in progress by Baroness Ekaterina Volkova.

Her Majesty spoke of the many gentles who gave up their time in order to assure that the day could progress, but chiefest among these, Her Majesty wished to recognize The Honorable Lady Odette D’Arques as Her inspiration of the day.

Their Majesties recognized all scribes who contributed to the Court that day and invited them to partake of supplies to replenish their inventories.

There being no further business, Court was closed.

Faithfully Submitted,

AEdult Swim, Court Reports

Being the Chronicle of the Courts of Timothy and Gabrielle, King and Queen of Sylvan Æthelmearc, held on the fifteenth day of February, AS 54 (2020), at the world-renowned Ædult Swim practice, in the Shire of Abhainn Ciach Ghlais. Submitted by Lord Snorri skyti Bjarnarson, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald.

The fifteenth Court of Their Majesties’ reign was a discreet affair. Their Majesties, having generously chosen to allow Their populace all the fighting time possible, called to order several small, roving courts in the afternoon.

This Roving Court first sought out the Lady Fede de Fiore and her peerless paramour, Lord Cassiano da Castello. The Queen spoke glowingly of all the various services this pair had done for her this reign, a constant presence as guards and retainers, as ready and willing hands before and after events, and as crafters of clothing. For these services, and many others, She saw fit to award them each with an Æthelmearc Award of Excellence, and gifts from her own hand as tokens of such.

Next, the Roving Court looked for and found Lord Jakob Krahe and Lady Jan Al-Tha’lab (called Fox), after they were lured into a back corner by a masterful subterfuge from Master Silvester. Their Majesties spoke gratefully of the work of Lord Jakob as their Captain of the Queen’s Guards, and for his dedication and care in performing this duty, made him a Baron of Their Court. They then turned to Lady Fox, and noted her many years of quiet, dedicated service, not only to the Royal household and the Duchy of Arindale, but also to the Sylvan Kingdom as a whole, as a provider of food and drink, and especially battlefield refreshments. For these, and sundry other small, and thought unnoticed, services, They named her a Baroness of Their Court.

There being no further business, the Sylvan Court of Æthelmearc was closed, and the Royal Household, with sundry retainers, courtiers, and various visiting dignitaries and Royalty, proceeded hence to Hoss’s, for victuals and deserts – with sprinkles for those such as were appropriate.

Respectfully,

Lord Snorri skyti Bjarnarson

The following is the report of the Court of Timothy and Gabrielle, King and Queen of  Æthelmearc, held on the 26th day of October Anno Societatis 54 in the Shire of King’s Crossing at The Tavern Brawl, Baron Brandubh O’Donnghaile, Tabor Herald.

Their Majesties welcomed all to Their Court and summoned Lord Godfrey de Bayeux from Their Guard. They then invited all children present to come forth. They tasked Lord Godfrey with the Royal Toy Box, and then loosed the Children to each select a prize.

All newcomers to the royal court were then invited to come forth and Their Majesties gifted each with a cup so that they could remember their time at the event, and come back to share a drink.

Baroness Elena de la Palma was then invited forward. She spoke about the effort of the AE Leads. The AE Leads is a committee within the Kingdom which is dedicated to encourage the growth of our society. One of the initiatives that is being championed is tokens of appreciation. The AE Leads Committee will be providing tokens at each event so that all members of the populace can use them to show their appreciation to any that they see providing service. Baroness Elena invited everyone to look at the Troll Tables at upcoming events for the tokens of appreciation and take as many as you wish to give to any gentle in thanks for their service.

King Timothy and Queen Gabrielle then invited Lord Jodocus van Cleeff to attend Their Court as the Autocrat of the event. Lord Joost thanked all who attended the event, and all of his staff who made the day a success, especially Their Graces Gareth Kincaid and Juliana Delamare for running the all-day side board. The cooks in turn invited all present to stop by the kitchen for leftovers.

Master Juan Miguel Cezar, the Thrown Weapons Marshal for the day and Lord Alfonso de Santo Domingo, the Archery Marshal of the day, were called forth. The marshals then announced the winners of the day’s tournaments on their ranges: For Archery, the Spiderwebs shoot was won by Lord Edwyn ab Eouan, and the Pumpkin shoot was won by Lord Meinulfr Grimsson. For Thrown Weapons: the Pumpkin throw was won by Lord Edwyn ab Eouan, the Apple throw was won by Lord Meinulfr Grimsson, the Skull and Crossbones throw was won by Lord Jodocus van Cleeff, and the Overall winner on the thrown weapons range was Lord Godfrey de Bayeux. The Marshals also ran a combined archery and thrown weapons challenge, and the winner of the throw and shoot challenge was Lord Edwyn ab Eouan.

His Majesty then called for the Mistresses of the List to come forth Viscountess Lucilla de Courtenay, and Meestress Odriana vander Brugghe. His Majesty Timothy had conducted a Heavy Weapons Round Robin Tournament, and he thanked the good Ladies for their invaluable assistance. They then announced that Sir Oliver Sutton had been the winner of the Tournament that day.

Baron Robert Hawksworth was then invited to speak for the Fencing Bear  Pit tournament that he marshalled. Baron Robert announced that he had been impressed on multiple fronts by the winner, and announced that Master Benedict Fergus atte Mede, had won the tournament, and also stepped out of the tournament to marshal the bouts.

Mistress Chrestienne de Waterdene was then invited to speak of the Arts and Sciences happenings of the day. She thanked the many and various artisans who had entered the Arts and Sciences display that day, and also thanked Maestro Zanetto da Como who had organized the classes and the teachers that day.

Their Majesties then called forth Lord Heinrich Holzapfel von Herxheim. Their Graces Gareth and Juliana had Awarded him Arms in absentia, and so they presented him to the populace as Lord Heinrich.

Lord Alfonso de Santo Domingo was summoned back into Their Majesties’ Court. Beyond serving as a marshal, Lord Alfonso had demonstrated his skill as an archer, and so Their Majesties recognized his achievement of the rank of Master Bowman. Scroll by Lady Murdia Drusilla Vettia Portia.

Timothy and Gabrielle then called for Lady Ceindrech verch Elidir to attend Them. They spoke of her service large and small – from copying the Æthelmearc song books to service as a youth marshal. They then summoned forth Their Order of the Millrind, Granted her Arms and named Ceindrech to their number. Scroll by Lord Owen Tegg and Lady Nicola Beese.

The scribes who had contributed to the glory of Their Majesties court were then invited forward. Each had spent hours of their time and resources to prepare the magnificent scrolls for Their Majesties’ Court, and each were given a token from Their Majesties’ hand.

Their Majesties did then demand that Lord Owen Tegg stay in Their Court and summoned Their Order of the Fleur d’Æthelmearc to attend. Agincourt, Court Reports, Debatable Lands, Queen's Rapier Champion

Being the Chronicle of the Courts of Timothy and Gabrielle, King and Queen of Sylvan Æthelmearc, held on the nineteenth day of October, AS 54 (2019), at Agincourt, in Their Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands. Submitted by Lord Snorri skyti Bjarnarson, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald.

The morning came bright and glorious, and so it was Their Majesties’ pleasure to have their court called into session on the fencing lysts. The day’s combatants were introduced to Them, and Queen Gabrielle did give to each combatant kind words, and a red rose, symbolizing Her love for them as Her subjects and the honor they did Her by fighting to be Her champion. Once all combatants had been introduced, Her Majesty spoke, and wished them all well, and to fight with honor. The tournament did then begin, and there being no further business, court was suspended until such time as Their Majesties desired.

Some time later, Their Majesties, desiring words with Lady Katheryn Täntzel, traveled to the archery lysts, and bade their court be called into session. They spoke of her long service to barony and kingdom as a member of the archery community, and said that there was an order that had consented to her inclusion. Their Order of the Scarlet Guard was called forward, and Lady Katheryn was made The Honorable Lady Katheryn, Scarlet Guard, and she was bade join her new order for congratulations. Later that day she was presented with a lovely scroll from Their Majesties, crafted by THL Gesa Wellenstein. There being no further business at that time, court was again suspended.

Accordingly, later that day Their Majesties again wished words with a gentle upon the fields of combat, and returned to the fencing lysts to reopen their court. Li Chang was called before them, and Their Majesties spoke warmly of his dedication to fencing and contributions to the Society as an artisan, and so Awarded him Arms with a scroll by Lady Murdia Drusilla Vettia Portia.

That evening, the day’s fine fellowship, valiant martial pursuits, and excellent weather, Their Majesties did again call all gentles there present to attend Their court with trumpet blast and loud oyez.

Their Majesties first summoned forward all children there present. When they had assembled, His Majesty spotted a young man who was an erstwhile courter of his eldest daughter. This young man, called Ben, was summoned before the court, and given the kingdom toy chest. With scant instruction, His Majesty gleefully bade young Ben to run, and sent the kingdom’s children in fast pursuit.

Upon completion of the Baronial court, Their Majesties called for all newcomers to approach the throne. These good gentles were welcomed, and given cups made by the kingdom’s artisans, and bade return often to fill them with the Society.

It was then Her Majesty’s pleasure to remind all assembled about Mistress Jenna’s tokens, to be given by anyone for acts of kindness and service they witnessed.

Her Majesty’s words on that subject being finished, the summons went forth for all redheads there present to come forward. Baroness Mistress Anna Eisenkopf spoke of the Taker of Souls Tournaments held that day, and gave accolades to The Honorable Lord Boden as the day’s heavy combat victor, and Lord Mathias al Tabai as the day’s victor of fence.

A missive from Master Antonio de Luna, Kingdom Thrown Weapons Marshal, was read. In it, he commended the following subjects for their skill at knife and axe:

Lord Duncan MacCoulagh, with an average of 84 of 120, has earned the rank of Huntsman.

The Honorable Lord Kumagaya Kentarou Masamoto with an average of 110 of 120, has earned the rank of Marksman. This being the highest average ever recorded in Æthelmearc, it is especially worthy of note.

All these skilled lords were bidden seek out Master Antonio for a token from him to commemorate their achievement.

There being no further informal business to address, Her Majesty Queen Gabrielle stood and addressed Her court, concerning the day’s tournament held for Her to choose Her champion. She spoke glowingly of all the fencers who had competed to gain her favor, but said that one rose above all others in her esteem that day, and so Master Po Silvertop was called forward. He was invested as Queen’s Rapier Champion with a scroll by Lady Vedis Aradottir of Coppertree, and accoutered with the cape and sword of that honor, and so took his place behind Their Majesties as a Kingdom Champion.

At that time, Their Majesties demanded the presence of Lord Halfdan Rauþkinn. Their Majesties did then call for Mistress Irene von Schmetterling. She was escorted forward by her lord, and knelt before the Sylvan Throne. Their Majesties spoke of her prowess and steady improvements in the fencing lysts, and so called for Their Order of the White Scarf, as well as any Ladies of the Rose, Garnet, or any other Royal Consorts there present. Mistress Irene was then inducted into that order, and a suitable scarf tied about her arm.

Queen Gabrielle then rose, and spoke with great admiration of a young Baron of the Court who had stepped in to run Her tournament that day, and did so with good cheer and great competence. She names Baron Robert Hawksworth as Her Inspiration that day, and awarded unto him a Golden Escarbuncle, tinted red for service.

Finally, Their Majesties called up all scribes there present who had contributed a scroll to the day’s courts, and each was given a token of appreciation from Their hands.
