Although the people of Æthelmearc and the Known World may be despondent at the postponement of our beloved War until next summer, the people of Pennsic have rallied like the army they are to the call of those in need!
At a time when medical bills and unemployment drive appeals to food banks to new heights and regular donors are unable to help, the #100kfromtheSCA initiative was created to combat the food shortage crisis in the Butler/Portersville area surrounding the Pennsic site with donations from Scadians across the world.
Now the people of Æthelmearc have one more reasons to look to our rulers with love and pride. At the command of Their Royal Majesties Maynard and Liadain, Kingdom Exchequer THNoble Rhys Penbras ap Dafydd donated Æthelmearc’s ENTIRE Pennsic Party fund for 2020 — totaling some $775 dollars — to the Portersville Food Pantry.
This disbursement from the hands of our gracious Monarchs brings the total to nearly $14,000, according to Cindy Burns, astonished food bank administrator.
One can only wonder if the rulers of the other signatory nations of the Pennsic Treaty will follow suit, or will the Virtue of our beloved monarchs stand unchallenged? VIVAT REX, VIVAT REGINA, VIVAT AETHELMEARC!
All those who wish to donate to them directly may due so by Paypal or Venmo via this link or by check to: Portersville Food Pantry, PO Box 102, Portersville, PA 16051.
Both the United Way and Portersville Food Pantry are 501(c)(3) charities, and all gifts are fully tax-deductible.
Every August, businesses in Butler County, Pennsylvania, where Pennsic is held, make much of their annual income from Scadians. With Pennsic canceled, that won’t happen this year. In addition, for many years the Portersville Food Pantry has been the beneficiary of literally tons of food collected by Paladin’s Pantry at the end of every Pennsic. That also won’t happen this year.
To assist Butler County in weathering this loss along with the hardships imposed by Covid-19, an inter-Kingdom group of SCA members, including our own Master Morien McBain, have come together to create the #100KfromtheSCA initiative. Check out the website to learn more.
Greetings to the kind and generous people of Æthelmearc!
As you know, two hurricanes in quick succession have devastated major areas of the U.S. Many of our SCA cousins in Ansteorra (Texas & Oklahoma) and Trimaris (Florida) have suffered heartbreaking losses.
While there are numerous real-world charities to which you can send your donations (and many of you probably already have), we ask that you consider also specifically helping members of the Society.
SCA members have, no doubt, lost items specific to our hobby like garb, armor, pavilions, and scrolls, but right now what they need most is cash to help them rebuild and repair their homes, and replace destroyed vehicles, furniture, and clothing. SCA-specific donations can come later, once the flood and wind damage has been repaired and people’s lives are no longer so disrupted.
A donation box will be available at the troll table at Coronation this weekend in Ballachlagan. Please consider bringing a little extra cash to give to those in need. With the blessing of Their Majesties, I have been communicating with the Disaster Relief Coordinator in Ansteorra, and this week I reached out to the Disaster Relief Coordinator in Trimaris, though they are still taking stock of things since it’s only been a few days and almost the entire Kingdom was affected. The proceeds of the donation box will be split between the two kingdoms’ disaster relief funds.
Not going to Coronation? Donation boxes will also be available at Agincourt and Crown Tourney/20 Year as well.
Note that these must be private donations from individuals, not from SCA groups. If your group has an SCA bank account and would like to donate some of those funds to hurricane relief efforts, please contact the Kingdom Exchequer, Master Tofi, for guidance.
Coronation will soon be upon us, and with it, a wonderful opportunity to support those who are new to our hobby. Our next King and Queen, Gareth and Juliana, would like to give each newcomer a drinking vessel (mug, goblet, cup, etc.) during Royal Courts as a way to welcome them to the Society. Will you help Them in this endeavor?
Donations do not need to be new but should be in good condition and serviceable as feast gear.
Attention, Talented Artisans of the Society for Creative Anachronism
In the Society for Creative Anachronism, we are a collective of volunteers, each serving in their own way at one point or another so that all may have a chance to play, enjoy, learn and have fun. It is on this mantra that the SCA has gone on for 50 years now, and shall continue to do so.
As we Celebrate 50 Years of the Society, many of our SCA family will be considering attending the SCA 50 Year Celebration Event, June 17th through the 27th of this year and many of them will be giving their time and service to the event, staffing the Gate, serving on the Watch, Marshalling the Lists.
We wish to show appreciation to the Volunteers who give of themselves, from the newest member giving their first hour of service to the Multi-Peer who serves alongside that newest member. The Society works because our Volunteers continue to turn the wheels and drive us forward to fun, adventure, knowledge and my personal favorites, Family and Friendship.
Everyone who volunteers on site during the event will receive a ticket for each hour they serve. These tickets can be dropped into boxes that will labeled with the items you’ve donated: items that our volunteers would proudly use or displayed long after the event is over.
And Artisans, this is where you are most needed. We come seeking donations from the Amazingly Talented populace of the Known World: we are asking you to please consider donating handmade items that people would Buy/Trade/Commission for themselves.
No matter your rank, Laurel or student; professional crasftsperson or astonishingly talented amateur: we’re asking all of you to help us recognize the volunteers in service to the Society’s 50th Year Celebration. Please, put forth your beautiful work to be a cherished gift for a Volunteer.
If you’re considering a specialized item (something that must be custom sized or fit, for instance) or you aren’t sure how to submit it to the cause, please contact my Coordinator, THL Justice McArtain, at firstname.lastname@example.org
All donations can be mailed to His Lordship Justice ahead of the Event or delivered at the SCA 50 Year Celebration Event if you are attending.
Any additional information / description of your item you wish to include (including pictures of our work if it’s a ‘after raffle’ item.
As a thank you to everyone who contributes, His Lordship Justice will be doing a raffle of his own.
Two artists will be drawn to receive a Gift Card each to get more supplies (or whatever you want to do with the money).
We thank you for your time and hope that you will reach out to offer your talent to support the Volunteers who give of theirs for this once in a lifetime Event.
