Please join the Shire of Hartstone for a weekend of everything excellent the Kingdom of Æthelmearc has to offer.
Saturday, April 23rd, we host the inaugural Kingdom A&S Faire in Wellsville, and Sunday, April 24th we are happy to host our glorious army for a Regional Fight Practice in Hornell, NY. Fighting starts at noon and will run until dusk or 5-6 pm, whichever happens first. The official event announcement can be found here.
We are hoping for excellent weather so this can be at one of the local parks; but if the weather turns inclement, as it’s wont to do, we will be inside at the Hornell Elk’s Lodge-3rd floor. This is the same indoor venue as our regular practices and last year’s Regional fight practice. We will determine which park we choose based on ground conditions as it gets closer to the time of the practice. (Please check out the event page on Facebook for more details as they become clear, and we will endeavor to update the Gazette and the announcements list as well.)
Both Fencers and Heavy fighters are welcome and encouraged to attend. The Shire will have refreshments available for you as you learn from, and train with some of the best fighters this Kingdom has to offer.

Duchess Dorinda Courtenay attended the Hartstone Muster and filed this report.
On Sunday, January 18, over 90 people heeded the call of His Royal Highness, Timothy, and traveled to Hartstone for a regional practice. These good folks started their Pennsic training by hiking up three long flights of stairs to a large area with a wooden floor and a room full of sword brothers and sisters. What followed was six hours of fun.

The day started with some warm-ups and authorizations as people gathered. The Shire of Heronter had two new fighters join the ranks of the Æthelmearc Rattan Army as both Rachel and Loegaire mac Conaill mhic Siadhhail picked up their initial authorizations along with at least one other fighter. Loegaire came to the Kingdom a few weeks ago from a different organization and immediately fell in love with rattan fighting. This practice gave both of them their first taste of SCA melee fighting, and they loved it. Matthew from Alfred also authorized, and Davus of the Rhydderich Hael successfully completed his rapier authorization in parry item. This practice not only gave people the chance to get their needed authorizations, but it also served as a learning opportunity for the Marshals in Training.

The warlords split the floor as the rattan fighters took the floor for thirty minutes while the fencers went downstairs to discuss tactics. Every half hour, the groups exchanged places. This format gave each a chance to spend time actually fighting as well as time discussing what to improve. An afternoon of teaching and practice left both groups exhausted, but better than when they started. None were more exhausted than Prince Timothy and Lord Sittius of Hartstone, who switched back and forth between rattan and rapier all day, although by doing this they did manage to avoid some of the stair climbing!

An afternoon of repeatedly climbing three flights of steps and thirty minute segments of fighting would normally leave people in a sorry state, but a marvelous crew from Hartstone provided food and drink for all. In addition to the standard pretzels and pickles, there were delicious meat pies and other foods to keep folks happy and healthy. This group of folks worked all day to take care of the 85 fighters and fencers who traveled in.

Both groups spent time on standard “fight to the last man standing” scenarios as well as resurrection scenarios later in the day. Fencers also worked on “how do we deal with being outnumbered” – a scenario we have been facing on a regular basis on the fencing field. Finally, the day ended with pick up fights for those who hadn’t been able to match up during the melee scenarios.

The day was a huge success, and can best be summed up by Loegaire’s post after the practice: “I love Æthelmearc!”
Unto the noble populace of the mighty Kingdom of Æthelmearc,
Greetings to you all. For those who do not know me, I am THLady Beatrix “Bea” Krieger, Squire to Earl Yngvar the Dismal, and First Lieutenant to the Regional Commander of Myrkfaels, THLord Thorsol Solinagua. I am writing to you today to announce a change in the schedule to the regular heavy weapons practice in the Shire of Hartstone, and cordially invite every fighter in Aethelmearc to please take part.
The point of this change is to help improve fighters throughout the region and build up good melee combatants, good single fighters, and competence in various forms, good tournament warriors, and good barrier fighters.
Every practice will begin at around 6-6:30pm on Friday evenings (at one of our local places, currently at the Elks Lodge in Hornell, New York) with about an hour to an hour and a half long session of warm ups and pickups. At about 7-7:30pm, we will do one of the following:
First Friday of the month-Melee practice.
Second Friday of the month-Barrier fighting.
Third Friday of the month-the Hartstone Round Robin Tournament.
Fourth Friday of the month-Funny weapons or odd weapons or different forms practice (if there is a form you never use, want to learn, or just want to try, this is the time to bring all your toys and try them out).
If there is a fifth Friday practice in that month (as there is in January), we will do whatever floats your boat type practice (barriers, melee, open practice, etc.) and just see what people feel like doing.
Each practice will have about an hour to an hour and a half of this format fighting, and then a session of teaching, pickups, and discussion, followed by a drink at the Elks Lodge around 9:15, and dinner at Paddy’s Pub at about 9:45pm (if you want food, we must be in Paddy’s before 10pm).
Newbies are very much encouraged on attending, and private lessons with fighters will be happening as well as the other main portions of the formatted practice. If we can, I’d like to get marshals present to do authorizations if need be.
This format for these practices will begin on January 2nd, 2015, the first practice of the new year, at the Hornell Elks Lodge, 60 Broadway Mall, Hornell New York 14843. Please use the back door to enter (be prepared to climb stairs to get in).
I hope this format will entice fighters to attend practices beyond their borders, and fight new people. I plan on traveling within my region and (if I am able) beyond, and learning all I can in the coming new year. I hope to see many of you in the next few months at practice.
