During evening court [on Friday]:

Their Majesties, having been seated upon Their seats, bade the assembled populace to seek their comfort, then summoned to them Her Grace, Duchess Siobhán inghean uí Liatháin. They asked her if she had considered their invitation to join the Order of the Laurel, and Her Grace replied that she had indeed well-considered it, and wished wholeheartedly to proceed. Their Majesties then sent her off with the members of the Laurel there present to sit vigil.

There being no further business, court was suspended until such time as Their Majesties desired.

The next morning, His Majesty and many other gentles did assemble at the Estates of THL Cynwulf Rendell and THL Eleanore Godwin, and court was called to order by Baroness Ekaterina.

Upon resuming His Court, His Majesty Timothy thanked all those that were able make the journey so that the court and proceedings could happen.

His Majesty then called for THL Eleanore Godwin. His Majesty spoke of the dedicated work she has done for Barony and Kingdom in promoting the arts, producing scrolls and encouraging and making Archery and Thrown Weapons happen. For all this she was inducted into the Order of the Millrind. Scroll forthcoming.

His Majesty then addressed THL Cynwulf Rendell and thanked him for allowing the Court of Æthelmearc to come into his home. The Order of the Pelican was then called and asked if they agreed that this good man should join their ranks. The walls reverberated with affirmation and the King called for testimony of witnesses. Viscountess Susan of Foxmeadow, spoke for the Royal Peers and praised Rendell’s generosity, charity and open and welcoming nature. Ladies Simonetta d’Alfassi and Siobhan Readnait read the words of Belgraunde the Bladegatherer on behalf of the Populace. Mistress Cori Ghora spoke as Jewel of Æthelmearc and said how Rendell was a treasure to the entire Society. Baron Carolus Loke of Bae Blaidd Gwael read the words of Earl Yngvar the Dismal, Knight of the Society. Baroness Isolda filia Georgii read the words of Master Dorinda Courtenay, Master of Defense. Master Charles of Alden’s words on behalf of the Order of the Pelican were then shared to all.

His Majesty, finding the actions right and proper then called for a medallion to be placed around Rendell’s neck. A cloak was then brought forth and the lineage of the cloak from Mistress Cori Ghora to Mistress Jenna MacPherson of the Lion’s Tower and to him. Next a Cap of Maintenance was presented. His Majesty then accepted Cynwulf Rendell’s oath and the scroll by THL Zofia Kowalewska was read proclaiming him to be the newest member of the Order of the Pelican.

There being no further business, the court of His Majesty was suspended.

That evening, after a day of passable weather, fine fellowship, fierce martial pursuits, sumptuous foods, and noble arts, Their Majesties did again call all gentles there present to attend Their court.

Their Majesties, having been seated upon their most noble throne Armando, and bidding the populace to seek their comfort, spoke to the populace about the excellence of the event, and the fineness of the Shire of Heronter. Having addressed the populace, They called for Fela Flußmüllnerin. They spoke warmly of her contributions to the Arts and Sciences of our Kingdom, notable in one so young of age, and awarded unto her a Silver Sycamore. Scroll by Lady Katharina of the Twin Moons, with text by Baroness Amalie Reinhardt.

Next, they had summoned to Them Kai O Kennavain. Speaking admiringly of this young man’s impressive service at his young age to the Society, they awarded to him a Silver Buccle. Scroll by THL Sasson della Sancta Victoria with text by Lady Meg.

The youth awards then being accomplished, Their Majesties called for all children present to approach the throne, and entrusted the care and distribution of the Kingdom toychest to their fifth and sixth heirs, Douglas of Arindale and Timothy the Younger. These fine boys, being old hands at this adventure, quickly decamped for the surrounding fields, followed shortly thereafter in mad chase by the assembled youths of the kingdom.

It was then Their Majesties’ pleasure to indulge in a bit of informal business.

Their Majesties first requested the presence of all in attendance who were at their first event. They bid them welcome, and gave them drinking vessels, so that they might find refreshment and fellowship that night.

The Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald, Lord Snorri skyti Bjarnarson, then summoned forth the Marshal in Charge of the previous evenings’ night shoot, Master Bowman Snorri skyti Bjarnarson, who was conveniently the same person. Master Bowman Snorri then spoke of the difficulty of the night shoot, and called forth Lord Bjarki Rikarðarson, the winner, and presented him with his personal token, cast by Lord Tassin Tresseul, on a silver chain to wear about his neck, that all might recognize his dubious prowess at nocturnal remote stabbing.

As archery was the topic of interest at the moment, Their Majesties also had the Marshal in Charge of the day’s archery activities summoned, and Master Hrólfr á Fjárfelli came forward. He named Lord Robert of Haseltine the best crossbowman that day, and likewise gave the name of Lord Godfrey de Bayeux as the best handbowman.

Their Majesties did then inquire about the Arts and Sciences display that was prominently placed in the upper hall, and Lady Jane Arden was summoned to explain the day’s happenings. Lady Jane explained that many and sundry items had been displayed for the inspection and enjoyment of both the populace and the Royalty, and that the populace had chosen two favorites: THL Robert of Furness’ tawed hat and shoes, and the Lady Nycaise D’Ozier la Tailleresse’ embroidered wool tunic. Their Majesties had also chosen a favorite, and that honor went to Viscountesss Eira av Attemark’s landschnekt inspired coif.

His Excellency Baron Caleb Reynolds did then beg a boon of Their Majesties for a moment of their time. He called up Lady Thalia Papillon, and took her in front of all assembled as his Protégé, admonishing all that her successes were her own, but that he would hear of her failures.

Next Their Majesties called forth their Champion of Thrown Weapons, Lord Rikardr in blakki Bjarn, called Bear of House Sable Maul, and inquired if he had indeed run a tournament to determine his successor for Their reign. Lord Bear replied that, with the assistance of Master Antonio de Luna, he had run such a contest, and that a winner had emerged. The Honorable Lord Kumagaya Kentarou Masamoto of the Barony-Marche of Debatable Lands then was called forward. Lord Bear divested himself of the accoutrements of the Kingdom Thrown Weapons Champion, presented them to His Lordship Kuma, and attempted to retire to take his rest. Her Majesty Gabrielle, having been impressed with the difficulty and imagination of Lord Bear’s targets, bade him stay a moment longer. Her Royal Majesty, being moved to name him Her Inspiration that day, then awarded him a Golden Escarbuncle.

The informal business of the court thus dispensed with, Their Majesties had summoned to them Broddr Refsson. Having heard of his knifemaking skill and recruitment efforts, they were moved to Award him Arms, accompanied by a lovely scroll from Lady Aurelia Argenta Prima.

After that, Their Majesties called for Guy of Heronter, words having reached their ears of his prowess at both fencing and service, he was Awarded Arms from their hands, with a gorgeous scroll from Lady Magdelena Txoperena.

Guy AoA

Next Wentliana verch Meuric was bade approach the throne, which she did, quite fittingly, from behind it, where she was acting as retainer to Her Majesty. Having long been impressed by her steadfast service from a very young age, and as she was now approaching her majority, Their Majesties were wont to Award her Arms. Beautiful scroll by THL Zofia Kowalewska.

Their Majesties then called forth Lady Jane Arden. They spoke of how it was fitting that They had already seen her once that evening regarding Arts and Sciences activities, because word had come to Them of her accomplishments in that area, and they had now seen proof. Therefore, They wished to enter this lady’s name into the rolls of the Order of the Sycamore, with a fabulous scroll by Duke Marcus Eisenwald.

Jane Sycamore

The next order of business Their Majesties’ had was with Lady Sarah Ballangee, who was called to Them. Words were spoken of her steadfast helpfulness for over a decade, and so Their Majesties were moved to award her the honors and accolades of the Order of the Keystone. The particularly fine scroll was by THL Vivienne of Yardley.

Sarah Keystone

The Viscountess Eira av Attemark was then asked to approach, and Their Majesties spoke of her constant service in the Shire of Heronter, at demos, sewing for others, hosting arts and sciences days, and cleaning up after events. For all this service They were compelled to add her to the Order of the Keystone, and a striking scroll by THL Gesa von Wellensten was given in token.

After the cheers had died down, Lady Meg MacNeil was called. Their Majesties spoke of her prowess in tournaments and melees, and of her willingness to travel to fight. For all of this, she was inducted in to the Order of the Golden Alce, with a beautiful scroll by the hand of Lady Murdia Drusilla Vettia Portia.

Meg Golden Alce

With smiles, Their Majesties then bade their Herald summon to them Duke Maynard von dem Steine. While His Grace is well-known far and wide for his puissance as a jockey of lengthy rattan, his many forays into the world of the arts were less well known – a deficiency now hopefully rectified. An exquisite scroll by Duke Marcus Eisenwald spoke of His Grace Maynard’s efforts at the minting of coins, the learning of 14th century deeds of arms, brewing, and many other aspects of craft. For these things, and many more, Their Majesties saw fit to induct him into the Order of the Sycamore.

Maynard Sycamore

Following after, Their Majesties had summoned Lady Siobhan Readnait, the red of her face nearly matching that of her hair. They noted her service as an Archery Marshal, retainer, guard, in kitchens, and in the Sisterhood of Bellona. For all this, and more, they inducted her into the Order of the Keystone with a scroll bearing words from Baroness Mistress Juliana Ortolono.

Siobhan Keystone

Next, Mistress Elska á Fjárfelli was called forward. Having already achieved a peerage in her discipline, the Arts and Sciences, Mistress Elska appeared quite confused as to why she had been summoned – and told Their Majesties so. They kindly enlightened her: she had been called to be added to the Order of the Keystone, for her many years of work on Royal Garb projects and service teaching at events made her eminently worthy of that honor. In token of this she was given a scroll made by the hand of Baroness Ekaterina Volkova.

Elska Keystone

Their Majesties, now wishing to indulge in a bit of theatrics, had summoned before them Their Most Noble Order of the Millrind. Once assembled, Their Majesties had Sir Ian Kennoven called into court, to much applause. They spoke of his longstanding service in the kingdom’s kitchens, and placed him firmly amongst the rest of his new Order with a scroll from Baroness Amalie Reinhardt. They then called for Baroness Slaine an Einigh, to even more applause, spoke of her long-term service as a water bearer – and many other acts of service – and added her to the assembled Order with a scroll from Vonda of Finnland. Finally, they called for Noble Rhys Penbras ap Daffyd – to thunderous applause – and spoke of his work as Kingdom Exchequer, as well as many other things, and duly added them as well to the Order with a scroll from the prolific Baroness Ekaterina Volkova. Their Majesties then sent the Millrinds to the back of the hall, there to render hearty congratulations to their new brothers and sisters.

After the front of the dais had been cleared of celebratory Millrinds, Their Majesties called to them Baron Rhiannon Elandris. They spoke glowingly of his work in the arts and sciences over the years, saying that His Excellency’s work was so striking that it was instantly recognizable as his own. For this, they were moved to add his name to the Order of the Fleur d’Æthelmearc, with a handsome scroll from THL Gesa von Wellenstein. This having been done, and vivats rendered with enthusiasm by all assembled, His Excellency turned to leave – only to be further detained by King Timothy. His Majesty then nodded to His Herald, who called for the assemblage of the Most Noble Order of the Pelican. He asked them if it was still their will to add this noble to their Order, and they replied in the affirmative, and so a Writ to contemplate elevation was read for Baron Rhiannon, speaking of his decades of service to the Rhydderich Hael, and the Kingdom’s equestrian community, and there was much rejoicing.

In due time, there was again an empty space in front of Their most noble throne, Armando, which begged to be filled. Their Majesties again called for Her Grace, Duchess Siobhán inghean uí Liatháin. Her Grace entered the court with much pomp and circumstance, preceded by drum and horn, and many worthy nobles, and beautiful ladies wearing clothing of Her Grace’s own make, and followed by guards from Ætt Skyti, well-armed and red-shielded, and other nobles with banners aflutter. His Majesty Timothy asked Her Grace if she had completed her vigil, and wished to proceed. The answer being yes, the Most Noble Order of the Laurel was then called for. Asking them if they still wished this lady to join their ranks, He was met with a resounding yes, and so then called for testimony from the Peers of the Realm as to her worthiness.

Duke Matthew Blackleaf spoke of her fine service and arts for the Order of the Pelican, then Duchess Dorinda Courtenay spoke of Duchess Siobhan’s fine qualities in the eyes of the Order of Defense. Duke Sven Gunnarson spoke glowing words from the Chivalry, then Duchess Cassandra Zoe Paganel’s words were heard speaking as a Royal Peer. Duchess Líadain ní Dheirdre Chaomhánaigh spoke as Jewel of Æthelmearc of the excellence of the lady, and then the words of three Masters of the Laurel were heard, each attesting to the scholarship, skill, and joy of the lady: Meisterin Felicitas Flußmüllnerin, Mistress Katheryn Hebenstreitz, and Mistress Joutsenjärven Sahra.

Once all these words had been heard, a medallion was called for, to mark her station. One made by his own hand was presented by Duke EikBrandr Solgyafi, OL, and placed around Her Grace’s neck by him at King Timothy’s invitation. A Norse covering was called for, to warm her shoulders, and was placed upon her by Meisterin Felicitas and Lady Katelyn of Nordmark. A golden wreath was placed upon her brow to proclaim her triumph, along with a kiss, by His Grace Sven. Finally, the Ancestral Pastry was presented, in its Ark, by Mistress Gail, to be kept and held by her in safety and reverence until it is called for again.

At that time, King Timothy drew forth the Sword of State, and along with Queen Gabrielle, laid hands upon its hilts, as did Her Grace Siobhan, and she spake this oath:

“I will, to my utmost power, stand against all wrongdoing, and uphold peace and justice. I will clothe fatherless and motherless children, virgins, widows, and poor people alike, and make them Finnish fabulous to the best of my ability; and likewise will I be a staunch and loyal supporter of my Crown and Kingdom, and rightly and honorably hold and exercise my mastership, for the honour to the Realm, this I swear, so say I, Siobhán inghean uí Liatháin.”

The Crown accepted her oath, and gave her one in return of support and friendship, and helped her to her feet. A scroll from the Scribes of Drachenwald was read, in the form of a carven wooden tablet, one side adorned with Finnish runes, read by His Grace Sven, the other side a translation of the first adorned with rune-shaped English letters, and devilishly hard to decipher, read with reasonable success by the Jewel Herald, without advantage of a typed crib sheet.

The assembled populace then gave three hearty vivats for Her Grace, Mistress Shanaynay, and the Laurels there led their new member to the back of the hall, there to give congratulations.

Finally, Their Majesties called up all scribes there present who had contributed a scroll to the day’s courts, and each was given a token of appreciation from Their hands. Engaging in a bit of Royal subterfuge, they caught hold of The Honorable Lady Zosia Kowalewska as she made to depart, and bade her bide a moment more. They then called for Their Most Noble Order of the Pelican. After verifying that it was still the will of this Order to take her ladyship into their ranks, Their Majesties presented her with a Writ to Contemplate Elevation to this order.

There being no further business, court was closed.

Respectfully,

His Majesty invited Sir Michael of Northwood to conduct a final piece of business with his squire. Sir Michael reclaimed his squire’s belt from Baron Dominic, and they both noted the long years His Excellency had worn that belt. Thus freed of conflicting loyalties, the Order of Chivalry was commanded to take the candidates to their places of vigil. Scroll by Mistress Roberta McMorland.

Countess Caryl Olesdottir, Mistress of the Pelican, spoke to Thorsol’s willingness to serve in any way he could, stating that the question, “How can I help you?” was indeed, the very personification of Thorsol.

Duke Magnus Tindal, stood and addressed Thorsol’s worthiness to join the Order of the Chivalry. Hearing these words, Their Majesties called for the Ancestral chain of Chivalry for the Kingdom of Æthelmearc. Sir Thorsol Solinauga brought forth the Chain and read the Chivalric lineage of Æthelmearc. Sir Michael of Northwood then presented Dominic with a personal chain of chivalry. Sir Michael and Viscount Edmond then strapped the spurs of a knight upon Dominic’s feet. Eleanor MacMorland placed a belt of white about Dominic’s waist.

A&S Competitions, Harvest Raid, Heronter

By Signora Ginevra Isabetta del Dolce

Sonnet 1

Whilst clouds did cover all the land with rain
Within our halls delights could scarcely hide
The arts of Æthelmearc bore bright refrain
And with their joyous leisure changed the sky
A fretted griffin did Rhiannon bring
To meet with pleasure paints which Jocelyn dared
Hrolfr wove red threads the Queen’s own dress to ring
And Kate and Ginny each a scroll prepared
Here Elska’s work like dragon’s treasured cave:
We tasted mead and conserve; belt we eyed
Eadaoin’s wassail gave us the drink we crave
Fearghus this hoard within his chest might hide
The woven trim was crowd’s quite favourite art
Most highly judged: the Wool was worlds apart

On Saturday, September 30, Anno Societatis 52, much of the Kingdom gathered in the Shire of Heronter on the shores of Lake Chautauqua for our annual Harvest Raid. I had the honor and extreme pleasure of organizing my favorite event activity: the Arts & Sciences display and competition.

I was astounded and delighted by the breadth of entries for the display and competition as well as the thorough documentation that many contributors included with their works.

We had two categories for entries. First, the competition that was held was for completed works in the theme of the harvest. This portion of entries was adjudicated.

Image 1

Harvest-themed offerings. Photo courtesy Baron Rhiannon.

Second was the open display, which was without theme or medium restrictions. Entries could be completed or works in progress. I enjoy having both categories available, as this gives all artists a chance to contribute work.

While all entries were beautifully made and presented, Fiber Arts won the day.

The Honorable Lady Elska á Fjárfelli won the harvest competition with her dyed wool and the Skjoldehamn belt into which it was made.

The skills and artistry of Elska were much appreciated by all.

All members in attendance were welcomed to vote for their favorite among the entries, giving those without the theme a chance to shine.

Lord Hrólfr á Fjárfelli’s card-woven band for Her Majesty Queen Juliana’s apron dress, a beautiful Æthelmearc-themed trim inspired by the Birka Bands, was the highly marked favorite.

The other entries, in various media, were all worthy of our attention and showed myriad skills. I look forward to these artists’ next entries!

A very pleasing array of arts and sciences were offered throughout the day in addition to the competition and display. While many of Æthelmearc’s subjects gathered in the great hall throughout the day working on personal projects, there was also a small library, a scribal playtime hosted by Mistress Roberta, children’s activities including a Viking longship-building competition headed by Lord Lodthinn, and a games table hosted by Lady Maggie.

The arts are alive and well in Æthelmearc. What an honor it is to be a part of them. I look forward to seeing what you are working on the next time we meet.

Æthelmearc Crown in Sugarpaste

Coronation, Harvest Raid, Heronter, Subtleties, Sugarpaste

By Sir Ian Kennoven.

For the Coronation dinner of Marcus III and Margerite of Æthelmearc, held at Harvest Raid in the Shire of Heronter on September 24, I created an edible crown. There are several crown styles available to the monarchs of Æthelmearc, but the Byzantine style looked to be the simplest to reproduce, so that is where I started.  My intent is to do the others at some future date…

Master Janos (majordomo for the reign) provided me a with few pictures of the crown in his care.crown2

I then made a cardstock mock-up and shaping form.

crown3crown4Next, I mixed up a batch of sugarpaste:

  • 1/2 tsp. gum tragacanth
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • 2 tsp. orange blossom water
  • 1 Tb.  egg white
  • 12 to 16 oz. sugar, ground fine

Wet the gum with the lemon juice then add the orange blossom water and egg white.

Rest for several minutes and slowly incorporate the sugar until the desired consistency is reached.

The paste was rolled out and with the mock-up used as a template, the front piece was cut out. I worked the piece flat (smoothed the center areas and textured the borders), but when it was lifted to place onto the form the surface crinkled and much of the detail was lost. The form was too flimsy to work on, so if I make this crown again, I will create a more rigid form to work upon. The sugar was cured for a day in the dehydrator before being removed from the form. The sides were then cut. They slid off the form through the night, but luckily broke along the lines delineating the individual plaques. I now had an eight-piece sculpture instead of four.

They were placed back on the form and cured for another day before being removed so that the back piece could be manufactured.crown5

A template was made and the escarbuncles were quickly cut out of sugarpaste using an X-Acto knife.

crown6Once all the pieces had cured for a few days it was time to gold & silver leaf them. Each section was painted with egg white and allowed to dry. Twenty-four sheets of edible gold leaf and six sheets of edible silver leaf later, they were shiny.crown7

I made a very quick plaster mold from wax cabochons. They shifted on me while pouring the plaster, but enough were workable to make the carnelians. After melting out the wax and allowing the form to cool, it was soaked overnight in water.  I dissolved 1 cup of granular sugar in 1/2 cup of water, tossed in a small red beet from the garden and a tablespoonful of red sandalwood powder. (Editor’s note: red sandalwood, or sanders, is edible, while brown sandalwood used for incense is inedible.) This was brought to around 200 degrees Fahrenheit then the solids were strained out. The syrup was quickly placed back on the heat,  brought to 300 F,  removed from the heat and the bottom of the pan was placed briefly in cool water. The mold was patted dry and a spoon was used to drip syrup into the mold. As they cooled the carnelians were popped out and more were cast.crown8

crown9

Once cooled the sugar carnelians were glued in place with a thinned-out version of the sugarpaste.

This was allowed to rest for a day, then the whole was assembled using the same sugar glue. The crown was placed in the dehydrator overnight.

The seams were then covered in gold leaf and the crown was returned to the dehydrator for another night.

I presented the subtlety to Their Majesties about halfway through the feast.  By the end of the meal, Her Majesty had broken the crown into pieces and distributed them to be eaten by the populace.

Coronation/Harvest Raid Reservation Information

Coronation, Harvest Raid

harvestGreetings!  Just a few reminders from the reservations clerk for Coronation/Harvest Raid:

1.  Most importantly, I take reservations in the order I receive payment for them. I do not hold spaces for anyone. You are all special and you are all my friends. Please send in the checks or drop them off to my house. If you want a notification that it was received, please provide an email.

2.  We do not rent out “a cabin” – we rent out a bed in a cabin. If you want a whole cabin for you and your friends, the best way to do that is to send me reservations for 10-12 people with a note to put them together  I go to great lengths to put compatible people together, and I will do my best for you. If you aren’t comfortable with this, tent/trailer camping is a good way to get your privacy. Some of the bunks are upper bunks. Most of the time, people work it out, but if you have 10 people who all need a lower bunk, that is a problem. Please consider having someone bring a cot.

3.  Refunds – we have had issues with our generous refund policy, as several people reserved with only a medium intention to attend, knowing they will get their money back.  This hurts others who wanted to stay and eat but were turned away, so please do not do this. However, we are not about keeping your money for an event you couldn’t attend. If you cannot attend, please email me as soon as you can to let me know. If we can resell your feast seat or your cabin spot, we will refund your money after the event, however, leaving the event early so “we have freed up a bed for Saturday night” doesn’t really help anyone. We will refund your day fee if you cannot
attend and ask. However, all refunds are done after the event, and I have to mail checks to get signatures, so it may not be lightning fast. Please be patient with me on these. I do not want your money if you were too ill to attend the event, but I hate doing refunds. I love you, hate mailing checks.

4.  Pre-seating – If you have a mobility disability and wish to have space reserved for you on the upper level of the hall, just let me know and I will pencil you into a table.  You will still need to put your sticker on that spot when you check in. If you have a large group and wish me to pre-seat them, I will do that as well, but PLEASE TELL THEM so they put their sticker on that spot and don’t fill in to another. The whole point is to prevent large groups from taking all the tables with a few spots left for that family of 6 who gets there late.

Any questions, please write me at reservations@heronter.info and I will do my best to help you!

Dorinda

Harvest Raid

By Maestro Filipo De Sancto Martino aka That Guy Phil

Secluded in the woods on the shores of Lake Chautauqua, in the jewel of Æthelmearc known as the Shire of Heronter, I mixed a jug of Manhattans by candlelight some ten feet from where a great friend sat vigil. It’s Harvest Raid, baby. It’s an afternoon, two nights, a day, a huge feast, and a wake up at one of Æthelmearc’s premier events. It’s an exclusive SCA getaway. Your social directors out-do themselves every year by cramming as much fighting, fencing, thrown weapons, archery, entertainment, food, drink, and socializing into every minute in a rustic camp cut out of thick wood on the shore of a beautiful lake. For a SCAdian it doesn’t get any better than this outside of Cooper’s Lake. Frankly, if Cooper’s Lake had a VIP campsite secluded from the rest of Pennsic with the best scenery and facilities tailored to a discerning limited and lucky few; Harvest Raid would be that VIP site.

Lake Chautauqua. Photo by Master Filippo da Sanct Martino.

Lake Chautauqua. Photo by Her Ladyship Cordelia Colton

I digress, but that’s what I do.

My apologies for being late on this assignment. The lovely estates of the Casa De Martino and my beautiful family within were more appealing than writing. I did find myself engaged in the great works of the changing demands on one’s lands as the seasons change. So before some would fear that a man who once published thousands of pages be stymied by a short report, or that a man who laughed at people who mocked his ability to spell or use grammar correctly would now hide from the spotlight of a blog, I shall once again put medieval-sounding cliché to work and pound this out like a blacksmith striking a red hot ingot.

I digress, but that’s what I do.

This year was very special as it hosted the Coronation of Their Majesties, Tindal and Etain.

The last courts of Their Majesties Timothy and Gabrielle, which spanned from Friday night to Saturday morning, were very impressive and set the pace for the magic that was to make up the whole weekend. Friday night saw two separate courts.

Baron Tadgh receives the Order of the Gage. Photo by Master Filipo.

Baron Tadhg receives the Order of the Gage. Photo by Master Filipo.

The first took place in the dark of night in the illuminated Fencing Pavilion where Their Majesties Timothy and Gabrielle sent Baron Benedict Fergus atte Mede to vigil to contemplate elevation to the Order of Defense. The second court took place soon after on the stage of the Main Lodge where first Their Majesties Timothy and Gabrielle inducted Baron Tadhg Sotal Ó Néill into the Order of the Gage. His Knight, Duke Maynard Von dem Steine, and his Pelican, Duchess Líadain ní Dheirdre Chaomhánaigh, placed the medallion around his neck. Watching this was THL Ian Kennoven, who was retaining for Their Majesties. Was this a mere coincidence? I think not. Prepare for a classic ambush in court. To his surprise, and only his surprise, he was called before them and became even more surprised when the Order of the Chivalry was called forth to take him off to vigil. And yes, my friends, this was only Friday night. It was relatively early Friday night as much Vigil style activity, snacking, socializing, and cocktails prevailed. I did mention mixing Manhattans in a large glass jug.

A ten-thirty AM Saturday court meant a leisurely Harvest Raid breakfast. Yes, they serve breakfast. Coffee, oatmeal, French toast, and good company in the Main Hall made a good start for the day. It’s nice to settle into the day’s activities without being rushed. I hate running from troll to have to find a changing room and a place to stow the gear while I sip back the rest of my Tim Horton’s black coffee in its glaringly non-period coffee cup. I hate dashing about spilling coffee while saying quick hellos all the time knowing I’m making myself later than I want to be. No worries, mate. This is Harvest Raid. I have time to be social while chilling as if I were in some European bistro.

Court was awesome. TRM Timothy and Gabrielle gave some great people some well-deserved awards. Check out the court report when it comes out. It was grand. I’m not mentioning any names, but one guy’s head became so swollen with pride that his head no longer fit the Court Barony Coronet the King had made with his own hands. You have to be careful, some of these awards can go to your head. The elevations of now Master Benedict Fergus Atte Mede to the Order of the Master of Defense and that of now Sir Ian Kennoven truly portrayed the personalities of each man. They were well done and very inspiring.

During the court, the Oracles of Delftwood appeared to share great cryptic visions and to warn TRMs Timothy and Gabrielle that their time was running short. I believe there were promises of rivers of blood, locusts, and general old school natural disaster doom theory paradigms and such. It was very well written and performed.

The Oracles of Delftwood would appear a few more times as court progressed from the end of TRM Timothy and Gabrielle’s court and segue into the Coronation. The guards, retainers, seamstresses, and court personnel were thanked for their hard work during this reign and were released from duty. His Majesty then released His beautiful, gracious, and generous Queen Gabrielle from service. At as many Coronations as I have seen, this moment is always emotional for all involved.

The Heir, Sir Magnus Tindal, came forth to claim his right to the throne. His Majesty expressed great joy that the Prince would be succeeding him. Kingdom officers stepped forward to confirm Prince Tindal’s right of succession.

With that, King Timothy removed the crown from his own head and placed it upon Tindal making him the 37th King of Æhelmearc.

His Majesty Tindal then called for His Inspiration to join him.

Reclined regally upon a lectica, Princess Etain was carried into court surrounded by an ornate procession of oracles, warriors, retainers, Roman banners, and more. It was a spectacle to behold. The Roman presence was carried off so very well. It was a pleasure to see SCA theatrics merge with pomp and circumstance. Note to you readers out there, it is truly appreciated when people go that extra mile to bring the show to life. The newly established court took positions around the dais. Kingdom officers and the Peers of the Realm all came forward by Order to swear fealty. All the usual traditions and procedures were followed, officially launching the Reign of Magnus Tindal and Etain, Augustus and Augusta Æthelmearc.

Within moments of morning court ending, all SCAdians present launched themselves into the daily activities. Court chairs were pulled down quickly and list ropes soon replaced them. Industrious people of Æhelmearc hustled armor bags, bows, axes, and knives here and there heading towards their various places of play. I sipped on my drink and took in all the enthusiasm and building anticipation and delight in activities about to begin. I was inspired and went to lunch. Don’t judge me. I wasn’t the only one because that line for the sideboard was long. I had never seen the Main Hall that packed for lunch. Considering court had just let out as the food was hitting the tables, may have had something to do with that. Socializing may be the SCA’s greatest activity. The tabled bustled with “top notch” greetings and conversations. It was good to see people enjoying each other’s company. We are truly a social organization.

This day hosted the Kingdom Heavy Championship and another leg of the Æhelmearc 500. During Evening Court, Their Majesties called forth the top five finishers in the Heavy Weapons Championship. They named Duke Duncan Von Holstern the winner and new Kingdom Heavy Weapons Champion. Sir Byron has an excellent account of the tournament and finishes here.

The Æhelmearc 500 (aka AE500) is an ongoing bear pit series now running over a year. The bear pit goes on until one fighter has amassed fifty wins. All the points that each fighter achieved that day are tallied with previous scores from the previous AE500. Duke Maynard reached fifty points first that day and leads in the series’ total point score.

Harvest Raid is legendary for its huge feasts. Duke Cygnus set a bar that many still try to reach. This year’s “feast with out limits or bounds” was prepared by Margaret of Enniscorthy and her staff. There were many fine dishes and everyone walked away full. At one point we needed to bring people back to the tables exclaiming, “We know you are full and cannot eat another bite. You can’t imagine that more food would be coming, but we remind you, ’This is Harvest Raid.’” Some would say that her best dish of the night came out last and that was a sumptuous Goat Stew and some very nice Pork roast.

In the darkened candlelit hall there is magic. The tables are full, the smiles are broad and the stories and laughter flow as freely as the drink. Plate after plate of joy is passed around. I look at the head table and see the Crowns of Æthelmearc. It is all as it should be. There should always be Crowns at Harvest Raid. It just seems right. It’s a noble and legendary event. The children eat a little and then scamper off to play with their new friends. The raised hearth behind my head becomes a perch for small children. Gwendolyn the Graceful walks from table to tale entertaining each with a song. Lodthin Viccarsson and my wife Cordelia discuss each dish. Life is good.

A special treat came from Sir Ian Kennoven who presented to the Crowns of Æhelmearc with an exquisitely ornate and tasty treat. Upon a festively decorated table of fine ornate linens did Sir Ian present a hand made sugar tower filled with candied almonds and two small siege weapons. He invited His Majesty and His two awesome children forward to take turns shooting the mini ballista and catapult at the tower.

The crowd cheered and laughed over the amazing spectacle. When the walls came down, the children came forth and collected broken sugar walls and almonds in bare hands and ran to their family tables to show their spoils of war. It was truly a grand and generous gesture by one of Æhelmearc’s finest.

The children were a big part of the weekend. It was good to see the children playing together at their own games and at a few pre-planned activities. Harvest Raid is a beautiful site and it was great to see the kids playing hide and seek along the wooded paths by the chapel and playing by the lake. His Majesty and His children took time to launch homemade ships into the water. It was nice to see the children be children and enjoy the day. The children were called up during court to receive gift bags, which greatly occupied them. It was fantastic to look outside the hall windows to see the children sprawled upon the patio enjoying toys and treats from Their Majesties.

Harvest Raid is all about the woods, the lake, the Main Hall and the campsites. The Hall where people come together, the fields that hold great tournaments and the wooded paths that free the soul. It is so scenic and in so many ways so surreal. You find yourself so removed from everyday life that what you need to do thousands of miles away drift away like the smoke from campfires. There is something magical about walking from a camp down wooded paths to field with a cloak for warmth and a lantern for light. I have found great peace walking through areas where the moonlight is cut by thick spider webs of tree branches. With an ornate axe at my side and cold ale in my mug I find something lost now found enveloped with in this primordial atmosphere. I am so deep in the moment all worries are cast asunder. I hear the crackling of a bonfire in camp. The laughing and boasting of my friends cuts the cool air and echoes over the lake.

We have been fortunate to camp in the same cabins, in the same spot, for over a decade. Many of the faces have changed through that time. Life calls out to many in different ways and takes them in different directions. They are not forgotten as we tell their stories. We recall past Harvest Raids and share memories of tournaments, great feasts and greater friends. We tell of the boar hunts, and the running of the bulls. We talk about what had better games, the Plague Party or the Viking Party. It was fifteen years ago that my Knight, Duke Maynard was knighted by King Cygnus. We happily recalled his vigil, which included fighting bouts against all comers including the Black Knight who took no blows, vows of silence, and more. We remembered other vigils like that of Sir Tristan. Fifteen years ago I proposed to Cordelia, my beautiful wife and best friend. Many good things have happened in those woods by that lake. So many good times and good friends that it is a mandatory yearly pilgrimage for my family and me.

It’s Harvest Raid, baby, and it doesn’t get any better than this.
