Documented from the Scrolls of the Reign of Anna Leigh, Queen of Æthelmearc: The Business of Rhydderich Hael 40th Anniversary and Baronial Investiture, December 1, Anno Societatis LIII, in the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael, accompanied this day by Her Heirs, Gareth and Juliana. As recorded by Maestro Orlando di Bene del Vinta, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald, with assistance from Lord Salvadore de la Torres.

In the morning, Her Majesty gave leave to Their Excellencies to conduct their last baronial court.

At the conclusion of their baronial court, Her Majesty then called Baron Magnus de Lyons and Baroness Miriel du Lac into Her court. She thanked them for their service and duty to their barony, and did divest them of their baronial coronets and release them from their duties as the 11th baron and baroness of the Rhydderich Hael.

Juliana and Padraig

Next, Her Majesty summoned Padraig O’Branduibh and Juliana Rosalia Dolce di Siena to hear their claim to the baronial thrones of the Rhydderich Hael. Her Majesty then heard words from the baronial officers confirming that an election was held in accordance with established laws and policies and that it was the will of the populace that Padraig and Juliana serve as the next baronage. Having heard testimony, Her Majesty did then invest Padraig and Juliana as the 12th Baron and Baroness of the Rhydderich Hael and did receive their oath of fealty.

Her Majesty then gave leave to Their Excellencies to hold their first baronial court.

Her Majesty then heard words from Ambrosius MacDaibhidh, who spoke of how his attention to fun sometimes overshadows his attention to accuracy and did acknowledge an error in scoring at the Kingdom Archery Championship, in which THL Cynwulf Rendell was declared the winner when, in fact, Lord Ronan O’Conall had carried the day. Her Majesty then called for Her archery champion, Cynwulf Rendell, thanked him for the time he did serve as archery champion, and did divest him of his regalia and relieve him of his station. She next called for Lord Ronan O’Conall and did invest him as the Æthelmearc Archery Champion and bid him take his place in Her court. Scroll by THL Eleanore Godwin.

Her Majesty then presented Master Donnan MacDubhsidhe with a pin recognizing his service as a former rapier champion to Queen Elena.

Court was suspended.

In the evening, Her Majesty called forward the children and allowed them to select a toy from the kingdom toy chest.

Next, Her Majesty gave leave to hold baronial court.

Her Majesty then received Lady Thalia Papillon, who presented Her Majesty with toys to be included in the kingdom toy box for the children. Lord Chebe

Next, Syele Pfeifferin was addressed by Her Majesty, who spoke of the many deeds of service given to the Crown, particularly in her acts in creating garb; and for this service did Her Majesty create Syele a Baroness of the Court. Scroll forthcoming.

Her Majesty sought audience with Her Order of the Millrind and, stating that she has heard their words, did call forward Duke Maynard von dem Steine and induct him into the Order for his years of service to the kingdom and the martial community. Scroll by Phelippe Pippi Ulfsdotter.

Duke Maynard

Duke Sigenoth the Blissful next appeared before Her Majesty, whereupon he stated he was willing to receive the accolade, and so Her Majesty called for the Order of the Pelican. In testimony, Duke Maynard von dem Steine rose for the Order of Chivalry and spoke of how Sigenoth is someone who is looked up to, who inspires others to grow, and is a standard of excellence. For the Order of the Laurel, Sir Ian Kennoven spoke of Sigenoth’s dedication to the arts. For the Order of Defense, Master Jacob of Dunmore spoke of the ways in which Sigenoth had a personal influence on his own growth in the Society. As a royal peer, Duchess Dorinda Courtenay told of how Sigenoth is an inspiration to all of us, noting that he is the voice that says, “it can be done.” And for the Order of the Pelican, Duke Matthew Blackleaf spoke of the decades of Sigenoth’s amazing breadth of service. Having been satisfied by these words of the peers of the realm, Her Majesty then called for Sigenoth to be arrayed in the regalia of the Order of the Pelican and did receive his oath, and did induct him into the Order of the Pelican. Scroll forthcoming.

Master Sigenoth

Lord Matthias Al-Tabai was then called before Her Majesty and named as Her inspiration for the day, and did receive a token from Her hand.

Awards, Court Reports, Investiture, Royalty

Documented from the Scrolls of the Reign of Timothy & Gabrielle II, King and Queen of Æthelmearc: the Business of Their Majesties’ Court at Pax Interruptus, 27 June Anno Societatis L, in the Barony of Thescorre, accompanied by His Highness, Magnus Tindal, Prince of Æthelmearc, and Their Excellencies, Aquila and Bronwyn, Baron and Baroness of Thescorre. As recorded by Master Dagonell Collingwood, White Horn Herald.

In the morning:

Their Majesties gave leave to Their Excellencies to hold their final baronial court.

Court 1Lady Elen Woderose was inducted into the order of the Keystone in recognition of her service to the Barony of Thescorre as event steward and pursuivant, and her service to the Kingdom in all matters heraldic. Her scroll was crafted by Master Caleb Reynolds.

Baron Aquila d’Athos was made a companion of the order of the Sycamore for his work in wood, leather, embroidery and forging. His leather pouches and belts, his forged nails and his feast gear boxes were recognized as works of art. His scroll was crafted by Lady Vivienne.

Lord Marius Sittius was called forward to join the order of the Keystone for his work in support of fencing in the Shire of Hartstone, including organizing practice, recruiting fencers, and helping them obtain gear. The Lady Arsalan Egiseg, who crafted the scroll for Marius, acted as herald, reading forth the words of his recognition first in Latin and then in the common tongue.

Abigail Kelhoge was raised to membership in the order of the Sycamore, and thereby awarded arms, for her lovely calligraphy and illumination as well as her costuming skills. Lady Abigail’s scroll was the work of Mistress Ekaterina Volkova.

Lady Genevote Nau d’Anjou was inducted into the order of the Sycamore for her knowledge and skills in the fibre arts and for her enthusiasm in sharing her knowledge across the Kingdom. HRM Gabrielle has personally expressed appreciation for Lady Genevote’s instruction on the creation of a two coloured lucet cord. The scroll was crafted by Baroness Anastasie.

Lord Andrew of Thescorre was made a member of the order of the Golden Alce (on the fourth of June, A. S. 50) for his martial skills. It was noted that he has recently served his Barony first as heavy weapons champion and then as thrown weapons champion. He was presented a scroll by the hand of Master Caleb Reynolds.

Randal of Berwik was called forward to receive a scroll for his induction into the Order of the Golden Alce dating from December 14, AS XLVIII.

Court 2

Their Majesties then asked their Excellencies, Aquila d’Athos and Bronwyn nic Gregor, to stand before them and thanked them for their long service and care for the Barony of Thescorre. Athos and Bronwyn were divested of their coronets and given leave to depart. Then did the populace of Thescorre petition their Majesties for Her Excellency Sadira bint Wassouf to be appointed Baroness of Thescorre, and so did their Majesties welcome Sadira with her son, Wassouf, her daughter Nuzhah, and her son-by-marriage, Kevin, together with her retainers. Lady Nuzhah did sing before the King and Queen of her mother Sadira and of Thescorre. Then did Gabrielle and Timothy of Æthelmearc speak and create Sadira once more Baroness of Thescorre, and place upon her head the coronet. And into her hands did they place the coronet of the Baron of Thescorre, to be held in trust for the Barony whilst she is Baroness. Then Baroness Sadira did swear her fealty to their Majesties and take her place on the baronial throne.Court 3

Their Majesties then recalled Aquila d’Athos and Bronwyn nic Gregor to appear before them and created them Baron and Baroness of the Court, and did confirm their Arms by Grant.

In the evening:

Their Majesties gave leave to Her Excellency to hold court to transact baronial business.

Then did their Majesties give Sir Byron and Sir Ariella leave to speak of the Golden Chain tourney held that day. And by their witness it was known that two fighters stood above the rest in that tourney and contested long and hard, with many bouts ending in “double kills” until at last THL Bluestar Child emerged the victor over THL Thorsol Solinauga.

Court 4Their Majesties summoned Jari Antenson before them and spoke of his service, and that he has always a pair of willing hands to set up pavilions and tents, dig sump holes, and in general provide aid and support in the physical set-up and take-down of events. For this work, and the pleasant mien in which he performs it, was he awarded arms. Lord Jari’s scroll was crafted by Baroness Anastasie de l’Amoure.

Baroness Laurencia of Carlisle was invited into court, as she had business before their Majesties. She did bring them a gift, but before she could present it, the Order of the Fleur was called forth, and Laurencia was, for her great skill in the Fibre Arts, created one of their number. Her scroll was crafted by Meisterin Felicitas Flußmüllnerin.

Baroness Sadira requested leave to reopen her court to award the victors of the tournaments sponsored by her barony that day. This was done, and also was THL Andrew of Thescorre proclaimed victor in the Seven Pearls Thrown Weapons competition.

Their Majesties summoned their Order of the Millrind to appear before them, and pronounced it lacking one. Baroness Helena al Zarqa called forth and—for her long service in many fields of endeavour, including organizing events, acting as chronicler, marshall of fence, minister of arts and sciences, and garbing the populace—made the newest member of the order of the Millrind.

Her Majesty requested that Sir Wulfstan of Hartstone come before her to receive from her hand tokens to convey to all those gentles of the Shire of Hartstone who made the new list ropes that were used at the recent Crown Tourney.   She then called forward Lady Venetia Elisabetta to receive a token for being her Majesty’s inspiration at Pax Interruptus that day.

There being no further business, Their Majesties’ Court was closed.

Their Excellencies Aquila d’Athos and Bronwyn nic Gregor approach their last court as Baron and Baroness of Thescorre. Photo by Steffan Wolfgang von Ravensburg

By Duchess Branwyn ferch Gwythyr

The general peace of the Barony of Thescorre was broken the last weekend in June at Pax Interruptus XXXIX. With the attendance of Their Royal Majesties Timothy and Gabrielle, and His Royal Highness Magnus Tindal, despite the heavy and constant rain, the stepping down of Their Avian Excellencies, Aquila d’Athos and Bronwyn nic Gregor, and the investiture of a new baroness, Sadira bint Wassouf, were witnessed.

Friday Evening Torchlight Tourney

As is traditional, a torchlight tourney was held on the Friday evening of Pax, run by His Grace Duke Khalek. The evening was beautiful, though chilly, and within the circle of many-colored torches, 9 combatants showed their mettle.

A challenging tourney with increasing opponents faced the participants, and though Beatrix Krieger and Ciaran Faxi Ullson were neck-in-neck for most of the tourney, Ciaran emerged the winner.

Morning Court

The Investiture was ushered in with a light rain, but this did nothing to dim the proceedings.

P1030245

Their Majesties allowed Their Excellencies Aquila and Bronwyn to conduct their business, after which They conducted some business of Their own. Following this, Their Majesties thanked Aquila and Bronwyn for holding Their lands in Thescorre, and Their Excellencies returned the baronial coronets of Thescorre to Their Majesties’ hands. Their Majesties then granted Court Baronecies to them for their service.

Baroness Mistress Sadira bint Wassouf, was formerly the second Baroness of Thescorre with her husband Saleem, who sadly passed away two years ago. She was called into court, followed by three camels of dubious heritage and attended by her daughter Baroness Nuzha bint Saleem, who sang a beautiful piece she composed for this day.

Baroness Sadira then took her oath, and received both coronets of Thescorre, becoming the eighth Baroness of Thescorre.

Martial Activities

As the rain grew heavier, the heavy fighters, undaunted, took the field for a Gold Chain Tourney run by Their Excellencies, Baron Sir Byron and Baroness Sir Ariella.

P1030276

Eight knights formed a circle around which eleven unbelted combatants fought five bouts with each. At the close of this stage, the knights gathered together to discuss their opponents, and determined The Honorable Lord Thorsol Solinauga and The Honorable Lord Bluestar as the finalists.

These two lords then fought each other, but were unable to best each other conclusively for many bouts, until at last, Lord Bluestar was victorious.

The tournament was followed by a brief set of melees, and then pole-arm and spear practice in pairs until the cold and wet finally drove them from the field late in the afternoon.

Perhaps with more forethought, the fencers took the hall for their activities, rather than remaining on the increasingly soaked field.

Nine fencers tested their mettle against each other, ending the day with a fun and challenging game.

Six archers braved the weather to compete in a tournament, of which the winner was Cynewulf Rendell.

Pax was also host to the Thrown Weapons portion of the Seven Pearls Tourney, in which the champions of all seven baronies in the Kingdom of AEthelmearc compete against each other annually.

This year, the winner of the Seven Pearls Thrown Weapons Competition was Andrew of Thescorre.

Entertainment and Dining

Though there were children’s activities and youth fighting scheduled, a dearth of youth made it difficult to continue with them, and so they were cancelled.

However, some brave youths could be seen playing on the playground and making their own fun.

A good number of merchants attended Pax, and the wool cloth especially went quickly, as people tried to escape from the chill.

Baroness Mistress Katja and her kitchen staff created an excellent finger-food lunch wrapped in cloth napkins, which included beef rolls, chicken pies, bean pies, pickles, cheese, cherries, and two kinds of sweets.

“Gentles seemed to appreciate that they could grab a bagged lunch and go without standing in a long line, and several people thanked me for including an ingredients list with each bagged lunch.
Although the weather was cruddy, Baron Eric and I had wonderful help from several gentles to set up the lunch tent before the rain began and swift help taking it down during the afternoon downpour, for which I am very grateful!” said Katja.

Evening Court

Their Majesties, His Highness, and Her Excellency held court in the evening, where they and their heralds met the challenge to be heard above the roar of the storm.

Baroness Sadira receives the new mathom. Photo by Steffan Wolfgang von Ravensburg.

Baroness Sadira reluctantly received a brand new and improved mathom*, filled with the tokens for the populace of Thescorre to wear: The Heads of Bob the Raven, so that the Barony can go “Bob-bob-bobbin’ along” to Pennsic.

Their Majesties expressed their appreciation for the many people who attended despite the weather, and Her Majesty gave a token to Lady Venetia, who had done many tasks for Her even with a broken toe.

The autocrat, Lady Elen Woderose, felt that the event went very well, and thanked the many people who made it work. “It went swimmingly! … Thescorre (and the SCA in general) pulls together beautifully when plans have to change on the spot. Never underestimate the populace. … Every single time I needed a hand, I got about three or four. The love of my liege lords and ladies really glued this event together, and that glue was waterproof.”

*The mathom is a long and storied tradition of The Barony of Thescorre; based on The Lord of the Rings, it is a gift which no one wants, but once you have received it you have to keep it until someone else accepts it. Frequently the next recipient is tricked into receiving it.
