Kingdom Twelfth Night, St. Swithin's Bog

Being the Chronicle of the Courts of Timothy and Gabrielle, King and Queen of Sylvan Æthelmearc, held on the eleventh day of January, AS 54 (2020), at Kingdom Twelfth Night in the Barony of Saint Swithins Bog. Submitted by Lord Snorri skyti Bjarnarson, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald.

Morning Court was opened with fanfare and ceremony, and Their Majesties, having been seated upon Their thrones, bade the assembled populace to seek their comfort, then had summoned to the Their Excellencies Saint Swithin’s Bog to swear fealty.

After that, Their Majesties had called before them Master Ian Campbell of Glen Mor, who desired to take Master Caoinlean Seanchaidh, called Tower, as apprentice.

Next, Their Majesties sought the presence of Baron Edward Harbinger, and Baroness Anastasie de Lamoure, and both were confirmed as Subjects of the Crown of Æthelmearc, with writs duly signed by the crowns of Æthelmearc and the Midrealm, and acknowledged by the Kingdom Seneschale.

Proceeding onward, Baroness Aine O’Muirghesan was called for, and she begged a moment of the court’s time to present to Baron Magnus de Lyon the Master William Blackfox Award from the Society Chronicler’s office, to recognize excellence in the work of Chroniclers and newsletter contributors.

As Baroness Aine was already present, Their Majesties next called for their Most Noble Order of the Pelican. Asked if they still wished to accept this lady into their order, they replied aye, and so, after being relieved of her yellow belt and chain by Count Haakon Oaktall, Baroness Aine was sent on vigil.

After that, Their Majesties called for Their Most Noble Order of the Laurel, followed by His Lordship Otto Boese. Asked if they still wished to accept this lord into their order, they replied aye, and so, after being relieved of his oaths to Duke Gareth Kincaid, His Lordship Otto was sent on vigil.

Finally, Their Majesties called for Their Most Noble Order of Chivalry, and then for His Lordship Bors of Rouen. After affirming that order still wished him to join them, His Lordship Bors was sent on vigil.

There being no further business, court was suspended.

Evening Court

After a day of fighting, learning, and merriment, Their Majesties processed back into court, accompanied by Their Highnesses Maynard and Liadain, and all manner of attendants, guards, and courtiers, and court was re-opened.

Their Majesties first called forward all children present, and set them on merry chase after the kingdom toybox.

Then Their Majesties invited Lady Annika Iosafova, Their Bagatelle, to come forward and speak to the populace about the day’s largesse derby. Many talented artisans donated gifts, but Their Majesties’ choice, in the end, was a set of a dozen hand-illuminated thank you cards from Lady Vedis Aradottir, entertainingly painted as exact copies of a printed thank you card she had received from the Crown for previous donations.

Next, the throne was approached by the Dread Countess Katherine and Count Alric of The Mists, who begged Their Majesties’ indulgence to have brief words with Their Heirs. Their Excellencies then turned to Their Highnesses, and offered gracious words and gifts in a transparent attempt to sway Æthelmearc to the side of the Midrealm for this summer’s incipient hostilities. Their Highnesses were politely noncommittal.

At the conclusion of that business, Their Majesties called for THL Guillame and Master Emily, to speak of the day’s fighting tournaments, Lord Mathias being announced as victor of fence, and Duke Dietrich, Their Majesties’ Heavy Fighting Champion, the victor in the heavy lists.

After that, Their Majesties desired the presence of Their Minister of Arts and Sciences, and so Her Ladyship Renata Rouge approached the throne. THL Renata said to Them that her tenure as Kingdom Minister was over, and that she had found willing and capable replacements, and Mistress Elska á Fjarfelli and Master Hrolfr á Fjarfelli came forward, and gave their oaths to serve the crown and kingdom well and faithfully.

Next, Their Majesties asked for the winner of the day’s bardic contest be presented to them, and so Lady Eadaoin Ruadh was brought forth. Their Majesties remarked upon the emotion in her singing, and so named her Kingdom Bardic Champion, with a scroll by Mistress Cynthia.

Then Their Majesties called for Katheryn of Saint Swithins Bog, and spoke of her helpfulness and good cheer, and so added her to the rolls of the Order of the Silver Buccle, with a scroll by Gwen Cooke.

Proceeding on, Their Majesties required the presence of Ragnhilda Manadottir, and, speaking of her help running events and demos, Awarded her Arms, with a scroll by Mistress Cynthia.

After that, Their Majesties asked for Daniel of Nithgaard. They spoke of his commitment to the running of his shire, regularly attending meetings and practices, and gave unto him an Award of Arms, with a scroll by Lady Murdia Drusilla Vettia Portia.

Next, Kara Ivarsdottir was summoned. Their Majesties spoke with sadness that this award was over a decade late, but were joyful that they could have it come from Their hands, and so Awarded her Arms, with a scroll by Mistress Ursula of Rouen.

Their Majesties then called for Lord Richard of Foxmor, and called the attention of the populace to his fine works of art, and entered his name into the rolls of the Order of the Sycamore, with a scroll by Lady Aurelie of Nithgaard.

When that was complete, Lady Svava of St. Swithin’s Bog was fetched before Their Majesties. They spoke of her work as a Royal Guard, a retainer, a Marshal, and as a commander of Æthelmearc’s field army, and so made her a Companion of the Keystone, with a scroll by Baroness Shirin of Susa.

After that, Their majesties requested the attendance of Lady Serena Milani. They spoke of her work donating scrolls and helping with the running of her Shire, and so made her a member of the Order of the Keystone, with a scroll by THL Vivienne of Yardley.

Next, Lord Ulf Bareleg was finally found and brought before Their Majesties. They spoke warmly of his efforts to inebriate the entire population of Æthelmearc with his fine libations, and so inducted him into the Order of the Howling Wolf. Furthermore, His Majesty Timothy stated that, by Royal Decree, that award should be known as the Howling Ulf for the remainder of Their reign. Naturally, the members of that Order also appeared, uncalled-for, as is their wont, and led away Lord Ulf for further celebrations, as is their custom.

That business complete, Their Majesties called for Her Excellency Delftwood, Baroness Amalie Reinhart, and spoke of her contributions to the kingdom’s prowess in the martial activity of thrown weapons. They then had summoned Their Noble Order of the White Horn, and added Baroness Amalie to their number, with a scroll illustrated by Sir Arden Scot, and calligraphed by THL Ceindrech verch Elidir.

That done, Their Majesties next had brought forward Her Ladyship Astridr vigaskegg, and spoke of her fine works and contributions to Their kingdom’s arts and sciences community. They then had summoned Their Noble Order of the Fleur d’Æthelmearc, and had Her Ladyship Astridr added to their rolls, with a scroll by Mistress Abigail.

While Their Fleurs were yet present, Their Majesties demanded the presence of Lord Angellino the Bookmaker, spoke highly of his illuminations, and also added him to their ranks of the Fleur d’Æthelmearc, with a scroll by THL Vivienne of Yardley.

In the interests of economy, the Fleurs were bade abide yet longer, and His Excellency Rhyddrych Hael, Baron Padraig O’Brandubh, was called forward. Their Majesties spoke of his skill with woodworking, and had him made a Companion of the Fleur d’Æthelmearc, with a scroll by THL Sophie Davenport.

Keeping to the court’s current theme of awards for Landed Baronages, Their Majesties next called for His Excellency St. Swithins Bog, Baron Gunther Grunbaum, and spoke at length of his fine service and works in the Barony, as an Order clerk for the White Horns, and as a Marshal, and then called for Their Noble Order of the Millrind, and had Baron Gunther added to their membership, with a scroll by Master Jonathan Blaecstan.

After that, Their Majesties spoke of one who has offered service to their reign above and beyond, in constant attendance, quietly dealing with issues, giving help unsolicited, often the first to arrive for setup and the last to leave when the day is done, and acting cheerfully and extraordinarily as Their Chamberlain. For these services, and many others, they had called forth Lord Tassin Tresseaul, and made him a Baron of Their Court, with a scroll by THL Edana the Red.

Then, Their Majesties called for Baroness Aine O’Muirghesan, and a grand procession entered with Her Excellency, being House Highrafters and Yama Kaminari and many other and sundry nobles of station. Their Majesties then called forward Their Most Noble Order of the Pelican, and asked them if it was still their wish to have this Lady added to their number. They responded aye, and then many worthies spoke of Her Excellency’s peer-like qualities, and many items of regalia were brought forth and draped upon this woman to mark her new station, and her name was added to the Order, with a scroll by Master Jonathan Blaecstan, and she swore an oath, and Mistress Aine then proceeded forth with her new Order giving congratulations and approbation, to the sound of many cheers.

Next, Their Majesties asked for His Lordship Otto Boese, who entered the court with another majestic train of nobility, being the vast glorious multitudes of House Sable Maul. Their Majesties had summoned forth Their Most Noble Order of the Laurel, and gave query as to the Order’s intentions. The Order replied aye, that they wished this Lord to join them, and then a great number of Peers of the Realm spoke in his favor, of his fine qualities and great works. Lordly gifts were brought forth, and His Lordship was adorned as befits a peer, and his name was added to the rolls of the Order, with a scroll carved in wood by THL Phelippe Ulfsdotter, and he swore mighty oaths, and all present before the thrones then proceed forth from the hall in merriment.

When the hall had again quieted, Their Majesties called for His Lordship Bors of Rouen, who came forth humbly with his Lady wife and various friends and retainers of rank. The Most Noble Order of the Chivalry was called forward, and Their Majesties asked if they still wished to have this man amongst them. They responded aye, and then many worthies spoke of His Lordship’s qualities befitting a peer. Then many fine items were given to him to mark his station, and then a white belt was put about his waist, and then a chain of links about his neck, and with ritual blow he was proclaimed a Knight, and Sir Bors gave his oath upon the Sword of State, and proceeded forth from the hall with his retinue.

Their Majesties then called forward all newcomers there present, and gave to each of them a cup from Their hands, so that they might return and share a drink with us again.

Sir Vladimir Mechnik then approached the throne, and Begged a Boon of Their Majesties. Sir Vlad owned that he was soon departing our fair kingdom, and wished to be released from his oaths of service to the Crown, so that he might more fully serve in his new homeland, and was thus duly and graciously released by Their Majesties, with great regret.

After that, Their Majesties called for all scribes there present who had contributed to the day’s court, and gave unto each of them a token from their own hands.

Finally, Her Majesty called forward Master Iago Benitez, and spoke admiringly about the wonderful smells of his cooking, and the joy His Majesty felt upon smelling the glorious aromas of Master Iago’s smoked meats upon first arriving at the revel, and named him Her Inspiration that day, and awarded unto him a Golden Escarbuncle, tinted red for service, in absentia.

There being no further business, the Sylvan Court of Æthelmearc was closed.

Bardic, Kingdom Twelfth Night

bardsFrom Master William de Montegilt, Kingdom Bard:

Good greetings to the wonderful bards of Sylvan Æthelmearc! Their Majesties desire a competition be held at Kingdom XIIth Night to choose Their new Bardic Champion. The rules are simple: Anything goes, with two exceptions. The songs titled “Song of the Shield Wall” and “Born on the List Field” will not be considered. Tune your instruments (if you use them) and learn the words! So saith William.

The Taking of an Equerry

Equerry, Equestrian, Kingdom Twelfth Night

By Mistress Shishido Tora (Gozen).

While not part of any Kingdom law, it is customary for Peers to assume a mentoring relationship with a student who aspires to follow the example of their Peer in achieving a level of excellence in their chosen discipline within the SCA. Knights take Squires; Laurels take Apprentices and Pelicans take Protégés. Each have their own belts which indicate their status, and when new people are brought into the SCA this is something that usually is explained to them to avoid the embarrassment of wearing a colored belt indicating a student relationship. The relationship between the Peer and their Squire/Apprentice/Protégé is personalized to the individual and usually includes expectations from both sides. Within the equestrian community of the Known World, there is a special type of student —known as an Equerry.

Historically, the term Equerry was used to denote a senior attendant with responsibilities for the horses of a person of rank. Within the SCA, the term is used to denote a “student” of an Equestrian Peer or Grant Level such as a Lancer (Companion of the Order of the Golden Lance). The intent is to denote that the “student “is learning and being mentored in the ways of the horse and equestrian arts.

In 2000, Sir Jerald of Galloway envisioned taking a squire based on the equestrian arts. Aside from being a Knight, Sir Jerald was also a Viscount and the premier knight of An Tir. He also designed the arms of An Tir during his tenure as Black Lion Herald.  Sir Jerald was an accomplished horseman and was very involved in the equestrian program of the SCA, competing throughout the Known World. He competed five times at Gulf Wars, where along with other members of the Lance of St. Anne, he held the field Tenant. He was an Equestrian Marshal in several Kingdoms and was Special Deputy to the Society Equestrian Officer.

Sir Jerald

Sir Jerald of Galloway

Sir Jerald determined to establish a Peer-student relationship for himself and his “squires” that was not focused solely on rattan style fighting but on the skills of horsemanship in the tradition of the medieval knight. Sir Jerald, as a former Herald Emeritus, did research on the term “equerry” which he used to identify this type of squire for himself. He also wrote his own ceremony for taking an equerry:

I, Viscount Sir Jerald of Galloway, mindful of your Prowess, Chivalry and Dedication to the equestrians of the Knowne Worlde do hereby recognize within you a person of worth and a seeker of knowledge. I have chosen you as my personal Equerry.

As an Equerry you will demonstrate to the Knowne Worlde the Chivalry, Equestrian Skills, and Pageantry of the Mounted Warrior of the High Middle Ages.

Do you understand the purpose of becoming an Equerry?

Do you agree to continue the example you have set forth which has caused the notice and appreciation of myself?

Then it is my pleasure to bring you under my shield, joining your voice with mine so that our combined example might cause others to strive for greater excellence.

Bear this belt with pride, but not in vanity, allowing it to remind both you and others of your continued commitment to myself and the Equestrians of the Knowne Worlde.

Equerry belt 1As noted on the website for the Lance of St Anne, Sir Jerald took the first two Equerries ever created in the SCA on March 17, 2000 at Gulf Wars IX. His Equerries were THL Brenna Caitlin MacGrioghair of Renwick and THL Myra Elvey MacGregor, both of Trimaris. He presented his Equerries with a belt, gules and or checque with Jerald’s personal device –a battle axe–on the tip of the belt.

Sir Jerald passed from this world on September 19, 2007 in his home kingdom of An Tir. Besides his excellent example as a Chivalrous man, Sir Jerald continues to serve as an example and inspiration to many equestrians throughout the Known World. It was his desire that others continue this tradition and that Peers or recipients of Grant Levels awards who had achieved a level of equestrian excellence pass their knowledge onto others and further develop their equestrian skills.

Mu’allemah Yaasamiin al-Raqqasa al’Alaa’iiyiyya created a third Equerry in in the SCA in the Kingdom of Artemisia. In 2002, she took THL Philip de Lisboa as an Equerry to further his knowledge of Equestrian Arts. According to her, Philip serves as her equestrian retainer, looking after her needs as well as those of her horses, and is learning horsemanship from her. He also studied the equestrian martial arts from Yaasamiin. During the Equerry ceremony Yaasamiin was flanked by her King, 4 Artemisian Knights, an An Tirian Knight, and several Laurels and Pelicans who comprised the approximately 25 spectators who stood as witness. As she notes, “He did not fit the Protege nor Apprentice category….. I used the red and gold checky that Jerald used and put a cinquefoil on the tip of the belt where he put his battle axe. ” (A cinquefoil is part of her arms.)

Yaasamiin and Her Equerry, His Lordship Philip

Equerry belt 2The tradition of the taking of an Equerry was continued in Æthelmearc, when Viscount Alexander Caithness took his own Equerry. In 2014, Mistress Ysabeau Tiercelin took Lord Rhiannon Elandris of Glyndrvdwy as an Equerry at Ice Dragon. Following the tradition of Sir Jerald, she presented Rhiannon with a belt—gules and or checque–made by another of her apprentices, Lord Magnus de Lyons.

Last Year, the Society Equestrian Officer, Dame Arabella da Siena, took an Equerry. The tradition continues in our fair Kingdom; at this past Æthelmearc Kingdom 12th Night, Mistress Shishido Tora (Gozen) took an Equerry under the Order of the Golden Lance of Æthelmearc.  THL Morien MacBain became the third Equerry of Æthelmearc, and was presented with a set of checky colored garters. The oath given by Mistress Gozen to her student closely followed the original ceremony of Sir Jerald as a tribute to his example.

Equerry garters

We in the Æthelmearc equestrian community are proud to carry on this tradition, and to foster growth in a part of our SCA activities that takes so much from medieval knighthood.

Kingdom Twelfth Night featured an amazing array of Arts & Sciences activities. Here’s a report on the highlights, submitted by Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope.

At Æthelmearc Kingdom Twelfth Night, in the morning court, the office of Kingdom Minister of Arts and Sciences passed from Mistress Alianor de Ravenglas to Master Fridrikr Tomasson av Knusslig Hamn, assisted by his lady, Mistress Orianna Fridrikskona. Master Fridrikr and Mistress Orianna, both from the Barony of Thescorre, have stated that their goals in the office are to promote the Arts & Sciences within Æthelmearc, expand the opportunities for artists, scientists, and artisans to practice and promote their crafts, and to support the on-going mission of the Æcademy to provide educational opportunities for all of Æthelmearc.

Their Majesties wore some beautiful new clothing to Their Twelfth Night celebration. His Majesty, King Titus, was arrayed in an intricate German Landsknecht outfit with slashed and interlaced breeches in red, black, and white, made by Lady Madeleine de l”Este.

Her Majesty, Queen Anna Leigh, drew all eyes in a beautiful green wool German gown crafted by Lady Teresa Alvarez, who put over 120 hours into embroidering the stunning bodice and sleeves with flowers in white silk. She based the gown on a portrait of Kunigunde Stammbaum der Babenberger from the Babenberg Family Tree triptych at Klosterneuburg Monastery (Hans Part, 1489-1492), shown below. The embroidery on Her Majesty’s gown, farther below, is Lady Teresa’s own design – she used a stylized edelweiss flower because the Babenberg family was from Austria. Lady Teresa was inducted into the Order of the Sycamore at court that evening for her skill in costuming and embroidery.

The Æthelmearc Sylvan Bard Competition

After the morning court, six performers vied for the honor of becoming Sylvan Bard. Pictured below are the competitors along with our Monarchs: Lady Bugga Bilibit, Master Ruaidhri an Cu, Baroness Gwendolyn the Graceful, Her Majesty Queen Anna Leigh, Lady Cairdha Eilis O’Coileain, His Majesty King Titus, Master William de Montegilt, and Lady Aibinn Mhor Inghean Rioghbhardain.

The competition, which was hosted by the outgoing Sylvan Bard, Lady Alianora Bronhulle, and past Sylvan Bard, Don Orlando di Bene del Vinta, featured three rounds. In the first round, entrants were asked to perform a piece on the theme of Courtly Love. All of the bards chose to sing; some did period pieces, others sang filks or original compositions. Then in the second round, the performers were given an hour or two to write a new piece on a theme chosen by the Crown. The competitors gathered in a circle around Their Majesties to learn in secret what that theme would be before going on their way to scribble madly.

Only when the second round performances began was it revealed that the bards were told to write their new pieces on the numerous knightly virtues of… Don Orlando! His birthday had been celebrated only a few days earlier, so Their Majesties bade Don Orlando sit on the steps of the stage so that each bard could perform directly to him.

The competitors were also required to choose a different performance medium from the one they had used in the first round, so for Round 2, most recited poems or told stories, many of them humorous in nature. There was a rhyme improvised on the spot by Lady Cairdha and a “doggerel” by Master William that was greeted with much laughter:

Don Orlando comes from far away
To celebrate with us his natal day,
‘Tis of his knightly virtues I would sing,
But I must choose just one! So says the King.
He sings of courtly love and such,
And eager ladies seek his touch.
Of chastity, Orlando is sans peer,
And so no ladies his amours must fear.
But truly chaste, he does rebuff
Their pleas and sighs and even tears,
Because he knows, though it be tough,
Once a king, always a king,
But once a (k)night is enough.

Master Ruaidhri an Cu then followed. Although he lives in Atlantia, Master Ruaidhri had received permission from Their Sylvan Majesties to join the competition. As he began his second round entry, he said that since he did not have enough time to compose great verse (with an aside of “Damn you, William!”), he’d fallen back on the old Scottish plan of drinking heavily. He then told a story of Don Orlando having taken a vow of temperance, but being gifted with alcohol by an unnamed Baron who Master Ruaidhri admitted was, in fact, present in the room. Baron Gunnar of Endless Hills and Baron Ichijo of Blackstone Mountain, who were sitting together, looked at each other, laughed, and said “That leaves only the two of us…” In the story Master Ruaidhri recounted, the unnamed Baron repeatedly tempted Orlando by sending him gifts of various types of potables, at which the Baron’s wife complained to her husband that Orlando would do the Baron bodily harm for such insults. In the end, though, the unnamed Baron told his wife that it would be fine, as he had put Baron Ichijo’s name on the gifts.

Lady Bugga performed an interpretive dance in honor of Don Orlando’s humility while reciting verse interpersed with singing, for her Majesty Anna Leigh had informed the competitors that she would look with favor on such performances. Indeed, later during a brief intermission in the evening Court His Majesty commanded a round of interpretive dance in the middle of the hall, which was later dubbed a Mosh Pit.

Lady Aibinn told a story of a young man who sought the definition of valor, which he learned was to slay a dragon. So he went to where a dragon was reputed to be, but found only a woman. She told him the dragon was away, but demanded various things of the man before consenting to be “saved. “ This took many years, as each time the man returned the following year with the items she requested, the lady insisted on more, culminating in a requirement for his allegiance. The man then requested her name, which she told him was Valor. As the man swore his fealty, night fell and the lady transformed, revealing herself to be the dragon. The man paused, said, “A knight is sworn to Valor” and completed his oath, at which point the dragon was vanquished, and the lady reverted to human form and departed the dragon’s lair with him forever.

Baroness Gwen then recited a sonnet on the theme of honor, extolling Don Orlando’s skill with both his rapier and his voice:

In January, winter’s frost doth bite;
The wind whips cloak and cuts through woolen hose.
Yet to the season one was born who fights
With blade as sharp as any wind that blows.
It flashes, ever dancing, but fear not,
For honor guides this fencer, and no foe
Could e’er complain of one excessive shot,
But merrily unto their deaths they go.
And afterward, he’ll sing us songs most sweet
Of knights and ladies, love and chivalry,
Or something of less lofty goals, of cheats
And vagabonds, and joyful ribaldry.
Therefore, Orlando, think this no mean trick:
We honor you, and not upon you pick.

At the completion of the second round of the competition, Their Majesties selected three finalists to continue to the third and final round: Baroness Gwendolyn, Master Ruaidhri, and Master William.

Master William sang a humorous filk to the Song of Shield Wall in which a group of men struggled to erect their Pennsic camp’s sheetwall against various impediments, only to finish just as closing ceremonies began. Master Ruadhri performed an original piece called “The Wrath of the Bard” about the perils of offending bards, while Baroness Gwen sang more than twenty spellbinding verses of her own composition about the story of Tam Lin.

After the finals, Lady Alianora announced that Don Braennan MacEarnan, called the Misguided, had arrived at the event too late to compete, but still wished to sing, and Their Majesties granted his request. Don Braennen then performed “Tom O’Bedlam” about the residents of Bethlehem Hospital for the Insane in London. His singing ranged from lyrical to disturbing and creepy as he feigned a variety of mentally ill people, at one point even crawling on the floor. It was a memorable performance.

Their Majesties announced at Court that evening that They had chosen Baroness Gwendolyn the Graceful as Their Bardic Champion. Baroness Gwen was invested with the baldric of her new office.

Their Majesties thanked Their outgoing Bardic Champion, Lady Alianora Bronhulle, for her service, then before she could escape, They seized her and inducted her into the Order of the Fleur d’Æthelmearc for her skill in the bardic arts.

Yet More Arts and Sciences!

In addition to the Bardic competition, there was a performance by the Sylvan Singers of the Shire of Sylvan Glen, directed by Don Orlando di Bene del Vinta. They sang an array of choral pieces including We Be Three Poor Mariners and Since First I Saw Your Face, then were joined by members of the Debatable Choir in performing three Yuletide songs.

At the evening court, Baroness Ekaterina Volkova, Sylvan Signet, announced the winner of the first round of the Scroll Blank Challenge, in which the scribes of Æthelmearc were asked to submit illuminated borders to be used for Kingdom award scrolls. THLord Ishiyama Gen’tarou Yori’ie submitted the highest number of scrolls: 59 painted blanks, all on documented Japanese designs. The Scroll Blank Challenge will continue, with the next collection point happening at the Festival of the Ice Dragon in the Rhydderich Hael on March 21st.

Baron Rauthbjorn Lothbroke won both the Queen’s Choice and the Period Brewing competitions at Twelfth Night. He also contributed to the Taster’s Tavern organized by THLord Madoc Arundel and Lord Kyoshiro Kumagai, working with the Kingdom Brewers’ Guild. The Tavern offered gentles over the age of 21 with ID the opportunity to partake of potables donated by the brewers of the Kingdom. The Tavern was a big hit, and many gentles are looking forward to Debatable Lands Twelfth Night on the 17th when THLord Madoc will host a second such tavern.

Event goers then retired to an elaborate and tasty feast prepared under the direction of three different cooks:
— Master Gille MacDhomnuill was responsible for the First Course (lunchtime);
— THL Byrghida Zajacszowa was in charge of the Second Course (mid-afternoon); and
— Master Thorsten Christiansen Ronnow directed the preparation of the Third Course (evening).
The host of servers needed to serve all this food was ably managed by Baron Meszaros Janos. As the kitchen’s “point person,” Dame Bronwyn MacFhionghuin was responsible for non-cooking duties: keeping track of guests’ food allergies, preparing the feast booklet and table menus, and ensuring the kitchen ran smoothly.
The Children’s Feast was prepared by Lady Maacah Sitt al Galb. For more information on how the feast was designed, see the article “Q&A: Savor the Feast at Twelfth Night, No Waiting!”

Another amazing item that debuted at the Twelfth Night feast was a baldequin designed and built by Baron Robert of Sugar Grove with furnishings by THLady Jacqueline de Molieres.

Congratulations to the Autocrat, Mistress Alicia Langland, and the Shire of Abhainn Ciach Ghlais, for hosting a truly wondrous Twelfth Night!

Curia, Kingdom Twelfth Night

AEthelmearcFrom the Kingdom Seneschal’s office:

The First Curia of Titus and Anna Leigh – Agenda

There will be a short Curia at Twelfth Night January 10, 2015 at 9:00am in ACG. Curia is opened by the King’s Herald opening Court. This allows us to make any required declarations immediately instead of repeating them later in another Court.

A. WRITTEN Officer Reports ONLY – Please have them to Their Majesties, Their Highnesses, and me by the event. They will be published on the web site and other electronic venues.

B. Kingdom Budget for 2015

C. Changes to Kingdom Financial Policy – second presentation. The initial presentation of the changes to the Financial Policy was at the Curia of Tindal and Etain this past summer. We then had several months for public comment. After this second presentation at Curia, the updated Financial Policy will be signed off by the Financial Committee and sent to the Board of Directors for ratification. This extended ratification process is in place because Kingdom Financial Policy is Society Policy and is higher in precedent than Kingdom Law.

D. Announcement of changes to Seneschal Policy:

The lead time for soliciting resumes will be moved from 6 months to 15 months before the current Seneschal steps down. The choice will be made by the Royalty seated one year prior to the change, so as to allow for an extended training time for the new Seneschal. This brings practice into line with the Exchequer’s Office.

Seneschal Policy, as all Officer Policy, is not required to go before Curia. As this is a major change to the way we currently do things, we are announcing it now and again at Curia in order to get feedback OUTSIDE Curia both in person, and via email and other communication venues before a final decision is made.

E. Change to Kingdom Law :

Their Majesties wish to change the deadline for Crown Letters of Intent from 1 month postmarked or hand delivered to Coronation postmarked or hand delivered. It cuts off a week lead time. We are putting this out ahead of time to try to get some of the discussion done before Twelfth Night as our time for Curia is very limited.

Article III: CROWN TOURNAMENT REQUIREMENTS

III-600 Letters of intent must be sent to the Crown. They must include the following elements for both entrants:
• SCA names
• Legal names
• Addresses
• Telephone numbers
• E-mail addresses
• Proofs of membership
• Age (proof to be supplied at Crown Tournament)

To facilitate complete letters of intent, a form is available on the Kingdom website as well as from the Crown and the Seneschal on request. Prospective entrants are encouraged but not required to use this form to ensure a complete letter. ***Letters of intent must be postmarked, e- mailed, or hand-delivered to the Crown no later than 30 days prior to the Crown Tournament. ***The Kingdom Seneschal shall verify eligibility as defined in the Bylaws and Corpora.

CHANGE TEXT BETWEEN *** *** TO:
***Letters of intent must be postmarked, e- mailed, or hand-delivered to the Crown no later than the Coronation immediately prior to the Crown Tournament.***

A&S, Bardic, Kingdom Twelfth Night

At Kingdom Twelfth Night, being held on January 10th in Abhainn Ciach Ghlais, the next Sylvan Bard of Æthelmearc will be decided. The following announcement concerning the competition is posted with the permission of Lady Alianora Bronhulle, the current Sylvan Bard. Greetings from the Sylvan Bard! Kingdom Twelfth Night (on January 10, 2015) is approaching, and the competition to choose the next Bardic Champion will be held at that time. Dust off your song books, tune up your instruments, and throw your name in the hat! The format will be as follows: For the competition, Their Royal Majesties stipulate that the participants rotate forms (like in the final round of crown), meaning that they cannot do two pieces of the same type in a row (i.e. two songs, stories, poems, etc.)

  • The first round for all interested participants will be a piece in the style of their choice with the theme of “courtly love”. This will occur before lunch.
  • Round two for all interested participants will be a piece composed on site based on a subject pulled from a hat. This round will be held mid-afternoon.
  • After Their Royal Majesties have heard the first two rounds and made their selections for the final round, round three will be for those chosen only and will be the bard’s choice of piece.

This round will be held before court. The Champion will be announced in court that evening. Please note that this is a 1-year term as Sylvan Bard, and you get some swanky regalia. Even if you don’t want to compete, there will be time and space available between rounds for performances…on a real stage! Come perform, or support those that are performing. It looks like it will be a very entertaining time. In service to bardic awesomeness, Lady Alianora Bronhulle

You can contact Lady Alianora at <e_whitcomb at yahoo dot com> with any questions about the competition The event announcement for Twelfth Night is here.
