From the Kingdom Pennsic Chamberlain, Baron Janos:
A friendly reminder for people to plan to help set up and break down Æthelmearc Royal this Pennsic. Set up will be on the First Sunday and tear-down the final Friday.
Like past years, we are looking for crews to handle the loading of the transfer truck at the AE Trailer and a ground crew to set up at N04.
We are also looking for folks willing to/interested in splitting the cost of a box truck for the first Sunday and the final Friday of Pennsic. The Kingdom will split the cost of the rental of the truck on those days. Doing so means we will not have to wait for the Coopers to transport, and will speed up the process considerably. If you are interested or can otherwise help out with transport, please contact the Pennsic Chamberlain at email@example.com or 267-679-1171.
Thank you all in advance for your help in setting up and breaking down Æ Royal this year. We hope to make it a quick and easy process like in the past.
Greetings from Æthelmearc’s Hospitality Coordinators, Lady Lasairfhiona inghean Aindrias and Lady Dubheasa inghen Dubgaill:
Do you enjoy the magic of Pennsic?
Would you like to be a part of that magic?
Pennsic runs on the strength and dedication of volunteers. We would love for you to experience the joy and wonder of volunteering. Æthelmearc Hospitality at the Kingdom Royal Encampment is looking for people to relax in the shade and greet people. While doing so, you can charge your electronic and have something cold to drink.
Each shift is two hours.
Hospitality is open Monday of Peace Week through Thursday of War Week.

This year the gift exchange has departed from tradition; We do not have a Kingdom assigned to us. This gives some unexpected flexibility and opportunity for our artists. In that spirit Our Gracious Monarchs Timothy & Gabrielle will be gifting all of our Royal cousins with tokens of friendship!
There are two ways for you to be involved in this endeavor. The first is the gift exchange basket. Since there’s no Kingdom & we have already received some beautiful items to build around, the theme of the basket is Norse (Viking). Cohesive items to this theme are greatly appreciated, but all generosity is welcomed.
The second way to be involved is making items for all the Royal Cousins. To keep this manageable I’m splitting the Crown and the Consort. Ideally 15-20 like items would keep this equal & easy to distribute (for all bags we would need 30-40). This is a big task! If you can only make 6 of something, please still do! There’s no need to worry about colors, make best use of resources available. The gift bags are approximately 12”x14”.
We have some amazing gifts for this purpose already, but value all contributions. If you have any questions or need to brainstorm, please reach out to me (phone & Facebook preferred over email). If you have the will & ability, but not the resources, please contact me. Material assistance may be possible. Items can be delivered at events to TRM or I, mailed, or delivered at Pennsic to the Kingdom encampment. Please do so by Saturday morning, August 5th, 2017.
Please include your name, Facebook name (if applicable), home group & contact information. You can do this either once, or even better, attached to each item. You’d be surprised where your gifts end up and who might want to thank you! If liquid or consumable, please make sure items are sealed and include ingredients on each item. If you have documentation include it (but don’t fret if you don’t)! With TRM’s permission, I’m looking forward to photographing many, if not all, of the donations to share on Facebook. If for any reason you do not want your work shared, please note that as well. We want to show all the amazing deeds of our kingdom and help inspire future participation!
Great ideas can be found on the Largesse Makers Facebook group, found here.

Duchess Ilish O’Donovan and Dame Hrefna Ulfvarinnsdottir send fond greetings!
Their Majesties, Timothy and Gabrielle, have once again charged us to create a wonderful party for the kingdom’s families and children, which is scheduled on Sunday, August 6 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in AE Royal. It is Their Majesties wish to have games, face painting, crafts, prizes, treats, and snacks for all who attend.
As organizers, we are reaching out to you for support to help make the Æthelmearc Family/Children’s Party a wonderful and great time for all!
With that, we are looking for donations toward the party to help support and defray the cost so all who attend may enjoy themselves. We are planning for 75 children. Below are some of the items we are currently looking for and hope some of you will be willing to donate:
Prizes for the games (ideas are necklaces, containers of bubbles, little things you might get at a carnival game or fair) – The Dollar Tree is a good brick and mortar source for inexpensive items. Oriental Trading Company is a good online source.
Donations of snacks (gummy treats, cookies, pretzels, chips, etc….)
Setting up a game or craft sponsored by you or your group.
Items for a prize table – suggestions include books, notebooks, small toys, small stuffed animals, period games, etc.
Volunteers to help run games, crafts, and entertainment for the children and their families.
These are just a few ways that you and your group can help. If you have any questions or are willing to donate or volunteer to help make this year’s Family party a huge success, please contact us. We thank you, and I know Their Majesties thank you as well.
More information and updates are available on Facebook.

Their Royal Majesties of Æthemearc, Timothy and Gabrielle.
Unto the rapier enthusiasts of Æthelmerc does King Timothy and Queen Gabrielle send greetings,
Some years back, We wrote the BoD of the SCA to discuss the issue of the Rapier Peerage. Our input, along with that of many others convinced the governing body of our organization that a peerage unique to the art of the sword would be beneficial to the society, and thus, the Masters of Defense were created.
We had the privilege of sitting the thrones when the MoD came on line. We discussed prospective members with many of you throughout the kingdom, before selecting the initial 5 recipients. Of the 10 who received enough comments from the populace to merit serious consideration, all but one have been invited to join the order. We’d like nothing more than to add the last one.
We are greatly pleased with those who wear the collar, and the contributions they have made to the community. We see these members travel throughout the kingdom as they share their knowledge. But their numbers are limited. There are only so many of them, and they cannot be everywhere at every moment.
Maestra Illadore. Photo by Lady Silence.
At Pennsic every year, Timothy takes the field and asks as many knights as possible to take the field at his side for an entire day. Friday, August 4th from 9am till 5pm. This year, We have asked Maestra Illadore, who has graciously agreed, to set up a similar deed of arms for the Masters of Defense.
Therefore, Her Majesty and I put forth this challenge to you. Come and show us your heart, drive and skill. Work with the Masters and Mistresses. Spar with them. Train with them. Learn from them. Show them you have the skill to be at their side. Since We cannot be of any assistance in training any of you, We will do our part by promoting this and trying to get as many MoDs as possible on the field with her.
No excuses. They are here, in one place for your benefit.
“They don’t come to my area”. They are here.
“They never fight me with my chosen form”. Yes, they will.
“I am out of practice”. This date is 2 months away. You have time.
Unto mighty Æthelmearc do Timothy and Gabrielle, Prince and Princess send greetings.
It seems the armies of the East and the Middle are going to summer in Our fair kingdom again. At the present time, it looks like Ealdormere has chosen to join them.
After consulting with Our outgoing Warlord, Duke Tindal, We have chosen a new Warlord, Baroness Alexandra dei Campagnella, OP. We have every confidence that she is the right person for the job, and We will try and give her all the tools she needs to help defend Our borders.
As Rapier Warlord, We are pleased to announce that Master Don Donnan MacDubhsidhe has agreed to stay on. He served Our kingdom well, and We have no doubt he will continue to excel in that position.
As of now, the mighty kingdom of Atlantia will be fighting at Our side, a partner in this endeavor. We have started to put the call out to Our fellow Heirs across the Known World for Them to join Us, and We will bring that joyous news to you as We receive it.
Any friends you have, please try and have them join Our cause.
As always, We live to serve Æthelmearc ,
Timothy and Gabrielle
P.S. Prince Timothy just spoke with His Highness Konrad, Prince of Northshield. He assured His Highness that His kingdom will be at Our side this summer defending Our lands.
Greetings to the populace of the Known World from the Royal Highnesses of the Kingdoms of Æthelmearc, Ealdormere, East, Middle, and Northshield.
We are making a public notice of Our intentions for Pennsic War as follows:
The mighty Kingdoms of Æthelmearc and Northshield shall meet the mighty Kingdoms of Ealdormere, the East, and the Middle in a contest of truly epic proportions.
All other Kingdoms, non-aligned households and mercenary companies are politely requested to fight with the Æthelmearc-Northshield Alliance in order to ensure the sides are fair and even for all of the battles.
Our number one goal for Pennsic is for everyone to have fun and bring back a little old-school Pennsic magic to the many battle scenarios We have planned. We will also be focusing on archery, the arts and sciences, and service, which will all be included in war point battles. As an added bonus, the heavy weapons Woods Battle will return to the previous location off Zion Church Road.
If you have left the Pennsic family, We are hoping this is the war you choose to return. Rejoin the camaraderie, spirit, and fun. We promise this Pennsic will be something special and one for the ages. Come back to Pennsic.
Timothy and Gabrielle
Crown Prince and Princess of Æthelmearc
The call was sent out this past spring to all the Queens and/or their Heirs to send their best to Pennsic, and several answered. In the end, this third year of the game gathered three teams of agents and spies to compete in a fun game of subterfuge and clandestine activities ranging from code-breaking to tagging one another throughout Pennsic. We had and East Kingdom/Acre “Royal” team, an East Kingdom “Rogue” team (made up almost entirely of House Serpentius members, and an Æthelmearc/Known World team, which had the Outlands represented as well.
The Game opened with a Plot: Gifts intended for the newest Royals of the Known Realm, that of Avacal, were stolen by nefarious characters and hidden away in order to sow the seeds of distrust within the new alliance. The Queens sent their best agents to uncover clues and find the presents—two cups—all while waylaying and knocking out each other’s agents. A single clue was discovered on the courier: a scroll of music. The game was afoot.
All three teams arrived at their next destination—the Sunday Arts and Sciences display—but only one determined that the scroll was a cypher; when solved it led the agents to their next test: their spy must keep safe on their person a delicate package (a hollowed-out decorated egg) to be delivered to a go-between at Bartertown. All three teams performed admirably at this task, showing the kingdom spies could be trusted to keep even the most fragile of prizes.
The third test was that of sneakiness; throughout Pennsic there were pictographs left in secret places, each leading to the next destination until the agents found themselves at the SCA-50 Challenge where they could test their pickpocketing skills on a specific target (a pickpocketing dummy set up in the hall). This game had some hiccoughs, unfortunately, with one or more clues having been discovered and removed by the public (geocachers call this “muggling”). Still, two teams were able to find a poem, a second cypher, which would ultimately uncover where the two cups were hidden.
At the Bluefeather Ball, one team approached the judges holding the prizes: House Serpentius, as the East Kingdom Rogue Team. The nefarious foes had hidden one cup in each of the entryways of the East and Æthelmearc Royal Encampments!
These cups will be presented to the rulers of Avacal in the names of the collective Guilds of Assassins, with credit given to the East Kingdom Rogue agents for finding and retrieving them.
At Midnight Madness there was a festive game of “Kill the man with the ball” using a basket as the marker to end Pennsic 45. The East Kingdom Royal Team proved themselves by holding onto the basket the longest, although Aethelmearc showed they had great skills with several kills throughout the merchant area.
Thanks to all involved, the Kingdoms who love playing with us, and feel free to join in next year.

This year marks the second in a row that an Arts & Sciences competition was included in the War Point count. The East and Middle were each represented by 15 Champions, including allies. While Kingdoms were allowed to include members of the Order of the Laurel among their champions this year, there was a limit to the number of Laurels per Kingdom. Points were awarded based on votes from members of the populace who held a Kingdom level or higher A&S award like the Sycamore, Fleur, or Laurel.
Since this war was East vs. Middle, only five slots were available for Æthelmearc artisans on the Eastern side, but we were mightily represented by Mistress Fredeburg von Katzenellenbogen’s woodblock printing; knitting and fiber arts by Mistress Irene von Schmetterling (who received her Laurel at Kingdom court on Tuesday of War week); soaps made by Lady Elska Fjarfell, who is our current Kingdom A&S Champion; glass made by Lady Kalishka Peredslava; and ceramic tiles made by Lord Ian Campbell of Glen Mor.
According to King Byron, “If my memory serves, the 15 Champions of the Midrealm and its allies scored 411 points, while the 15 Champions of the East and its allies scored 526. The 5 AEthelmearc Champions were responsible for 262 of those [Eastern] points. It was wonderful to stand with HRM Avelina of the East at the conclusion of the competition and congratulate all 30 of the Champions on their tremendous work.”
His Majesty further noted that the silver lining of martial activities being cancelled due to excessive heat that afternoon was that He was able to spend much of his time at the A&S competition.
King Byron addresses the competitors after the A&S War Point competition.
