Court Report, Queen's Rapier Champion, rapier, Silva Vulcani

Here continues the Record of the Reign of Gareth and Juliana, King and Queen of Sylvan Æthelmearc at Queen’s Rapier Championship, December 9, AS 52, in Their College of Silva Vulcani; as recorded by Lord Arias Beltran del Valle, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald, with the assistance of Nichola Beese.

As has been Their tradition, Their Majesties first invited those attending their first event in the society to come forward and receive a drinking vessel to take with them as they continue their journey in the Society.

New person

Their Majesties gift people at their first event with a drinking vessel.

The children of the kingdom were then sent in pursuit of the toy chest to provide them entertainment during Their Majesties’ Court.

Their Majesties then invited before them Countess Elena d’Artois, and introduced her as the Rapier Warlord for Their Army at Gulf Wars in the coming spring.

Elena Rapier Warlord

Doña Elena d’Artois is named Rapier Warlord for Gulf Wars.

Her Majesty then stood before the populace and thanked the competitors to be named Her rapier championship early in that day.  During the preceding tournament, Don Jacob Martinson emerged victorious, and so did She name him to be Her Champion and invite him to take his place in Their retinue. Scroll marking his victory was by Thea de Nes.

Jacob Champion

Don Jacob Martinson is named Queen’s Rapier Champion.

Deianeira Aella was then summoned to Their Majesties’ presence.  They spoke of her efforts to develop her skills in fighting, both in armored combat and with a rapier, and so did They Award her Arms and name her a Lady of Their Court. Scroll by Lady Shirin of Susa.

Deianeira AoA

Deianeira receives her AoA.

Next Their Majesties requested the presence of Donnchadh Ruiadh mac Griogair. For his skill in fencing, They bestowed upon him an Award of Arms. Scroll illuminated by Marcia Melia of House Sable Maul, with calligraphy by Baroness Graidhne ni Ruaidh.

Gregory AoA

Donnchadh receives his AoA.

Their Majesties summoned Gregory the Bearded before them.  Word had reached Their Majesties of his regular attendance at fighting and fencing practices, and his generosity in supporting other new fighters. Pleased at this work, they were moved to Award him Arms.  Scroll by Lady Shirin of Susa.

Duncan AoA

Gregory receives his AoA.

Petronia Alexandra was next called before Their Majesties. As webminister, she has improved the College’s website and fixed many extant issues there. She also follows a passion for archery, and assists her local chatelaine.  For this did Their Majesties name her a Lady of their Court and Award her Arms. Scroll by Lady Felice de Thornton.

Petronia AoA

Petronia receives her AoA

Before Their Majesties’ Court could continue, Master Kieran MacRae, seemingly seized by madness, ran into Court.  Her Majesty demanded he share what spirit caused him to interrupt so blatantly.  Master Kieran then declared it was a spirit of celebration that gripped him so, marking the day of birth of His Majesty Gareth, that so happened to be that very day.  With Her Majesty’s blessing, he then led the populace in song wishing His Majesty well.  His Majesty was then presented with a cake for the occasion, minus the slice His Majesty had earlier indulged in.

Kieran with trumpet

Master Kieran trumpets the news of the King’s birthday.

Lady Charlotte Stark’s presence was then demanded before Their Majesties.  Word had reached Their ears of her skill in making garb for herself and for others, as well as contributing a beautiful buckler to be given as a prize in the Wold Hunt.  For this was she named to Their Majesties’ Order of the Sycamore.  Scroll by THL Julianna Stafford.

Charlotte

Lady Charlotte receives a Sycamore.

Their Majesties then called for Lord Mathias al Tabai, whose efforts on the fencing field and the archery range had been made known to Their Majesties with great praise.  They thanked him for his tireless defense of Their Sylvan lands, and so made him a member of Their Order of the Golden Alce. Scroll by Baron Caleb Reynolds, with calligraphy and wording by Baroness Graidhne ni Ruaidh.

Matthias

Lord Mathias receives a Golden Alce.

Their Majesties summon Sorcha McKenzie before them.  They spoke well of her skills in presenting, cooking, and serving culinary art for many.  Many of the populace had expressed similar admiration, and so were Their Majesties of a mind to name her to the Order of the Sycamore. Scroll by THL Vivienne of Yardley.

Lord Robert Hawksworth and Doña Gabrielle de Winter were then asked to present themselves before Their Majesties as stewards of the event that day.  After speaking about the event, Lord Robert was bid to remain before Their Majesties.  They had noticed his continued growth on the fencing fields, even once shouting out his presence from behind enemy lines.  Despite protestations to contrary, Their Majesties determined it appropriate that he SHOULD indeed be there, and did name him to Their Order of the Golden Alce.  Scroll by Baron Caleb Reynolds, with calligraphy and wording by Baroness Graidhne ni Ruaidh.

Gabby and Robert

Lord Robert receives a Golden Alce.

Their Majesties, not having completed Their business with the stewards, then demanded Doña Gabrielle present herself before Them. Her skill on the fencing lists and her service to the Kingdom have long been recognized, but less acknowledged was her work in embroidery and the crafting of Tudor grab.  Their Majesties no longer wished that to stand, and so named her to Their Order of the Sycamore. Scroll by Mistress Fredeburg von Katzenellenbogen.

Gabby Sycamore

Mistress Gabrielle receives a Sycamore.

Her Majesty then stood and spoke again of the honor and prowess displayed in the tournament that day.  She noted one combatant who, though they did not win, comported himself well and honorably, and named Sanada Genjirou Masasaku Her inspiration for the day and awarded him a Golden Escarbuncle.

Genjirou

Lord Genjirou is named Queen’s Inspiration.

There being no further business before Them, the Court of Their Majesties was then concluded.

Upcoming Demos at Silva Vulcani

Silva Vulcani

The Silva Vulcani Shrine

Doña Gabrielle de Winter invites gentles from throughout Æthelmearc to join the good folk of the Shire of Silva Vulcani at some upcoming demonstrations.

California University of Pennsylvania is full of demo opportunities this April. I thought it would be an excellent time to give you the low-down, in case you are free and would like to participate.

Diada de Sant Jordi,  April 27th, 10:00-3:00  (Thursday)

Saint George’s day is a very important holiday in Spain – a day of books, roses, and romance. Last year, we had dancing, arts and sciences, and fencing, and were considered one of the most important aspects of the event. This year, we already have wonderful scribal talent from the Bog, fencers, and dancers have already signed up to come, but we would be thrilled to welcome more people. High school students will be bused in, so the age range is high school to college.

A Trip Through Time,  April 29th, 11:00-4:00  (Saturday)

This is a major reenactment event, advertised to schools, public libraries, VFWs, and more. The age range is open – anyone with an interest in history is invited.  We already have a Civil War Encampment, Scottish dancers will be joining our medieval ones, people portraying French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars, hands-on demos of primitive food preparation, and fencing. I would love to add anything to this mix – to introduce the people coming here to the wide range of reenactment and living history opportunities.

There are reasons why these came so close together. Several people were given minor grants in order to have events on campus to help assist with bringing people to Cal U and recruiting new students. Unfortunately, all of our timelines came together (I started planning mine in November). It also means that I had to grab what space I could, and so had to pick a rather unfortunate date that coincided with Blackstone Raids. I understand that there is a lot going on, but I could not pass up any opportunity to both bring the SCA to a new audience and show the University how useful and awesome the College of Silva Vulcani (known to them as the Medieval Club and the Fencing Club) is and how we support the university. If you can come to any of these, I would be grateful, because the more support we have, maybe the more people we will recruit? In any case, it will be lovely to see you.

Demo, Silva Vulcani

Sant-Jordi-coverOn Tuesday, April 5th, 2016 there will be a Saint George Celebration here at California University of PA (Silva Vulcani). It is the second most important National Feast in Spain, where the day is known as La Diada de Sant Jordi, and it is traditional to give a rose and a book to a loved one.

It takes place from 11:00-3:00 at the library.  Unfortunately it is a Tuesday, but if anyone is able to come, Silva Vulcani would be grateful.

Our hosts are looking for pretty much anything, including classes on crafts, displays, or just people adding to the ambiance with their costumes.

Sionn the lost has already graciously agreed to come down and teach dancing. We will have a display of fencing, as well.

The tagline is “A day of Books and Roses” – they are concentrating on books and would love to have book binding. Mistress Fredeburg has volunteered some of her print making work to enrich the display. Anyone who wants to display or create scribal art would also be welcome, and I know calligraphy is also a draw.

They want food; they figure the students and community will be drawn by the promise of free food. They would like people to come and walk around in garb and be part of the spectacle, so anyone who wanted to could join in the dancing, fighting, or sitting around creating art.

I am hoping to make this into an opportunity for us to reach out to the university and community (it is open to the public) and recruit, as well as to show the university what we offer. (It’s nice to remind them.)

If you can do anything, please let me know. You can reach me here.

Documented from the Scrolls of the Reign of Timothy & Gabrielle II, King and Queen of Æthelmearc: the Business of Her Majesty’s Court at Queen’s Rapier Championship in the College of Silva Vulcani 18 April AS 49. As recorded by Drotinn Jorundr hinn Rotinn, Golden Alce Herald, with the assistance of Lord Arias Beltran del Valle.

QRC_Kids

Her Majesty wished to invite all the children who attended the event to take some treats that they might amuse themselves during court.

QRC_Court1Her Majesty invited Don Orlando de Bene del Vinta, Her Rapier Champion, to attend Her. Orlando expressed how honored he was to have served these past months as Queen’s Rapier Champion, however he did this day host a grand tournament of 55 fencers to determine who would bear the honor of being his successor. The fighting was fierce, yet one did emerge through the double elimination tournament to prove victorious. Master Don Lodovick of Gray’s Inn was summoned to attend Her Majesty, after affirming his willingness to serve as Her Majesty’s sword and shield he was invested with the regalia of champion and invited to join Her Court. Scroll forthcoming.

QRC_Court2

Her Majesty next did invite Duchess Dorinda Courtenay to attend Her. The vigilants of the Order of Defense have a most noble and venerable tradition that has happened for each vigilant some time between the issuance of their writ and their sitting vigil, and Dorinda did wish this day to ensure that Don Orlando de Bene del Vinta did not miss out on this long and venerable tradition. Thus the Order of Defense delivered unto him a pie with a sword on it, as is the Order’s most venerable tradition. The pie was made by the hands of Baron Iago, and was made of apples.

Lord Magnus Bastiano di Vigo was commanded to present himself. Her Majesty did affirm with him that it was still his desire to join Her guard. Magnus did indeed still wish this, so Her Majesty placed upon him the baldric of Her guard and invited him to take his place in Her Court.

Their Excellencies of the Debatable Lands, Baron Uilliam mac an t’Saoir and Baroness Constance Glyn Dwr, were invited to present Themselves. They reaffirmed Their fealty to the Kingdom and to Their Majesties as the landed nobles of the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands.QRC_Court3

Her Majesty invited all who entered their first Queen’s Rapier Championship this day to present themselves with their consorts. She then gave each of them a rose and invited them to continue to enter tournaments, as their deeds of valor and chivalry did not go unnoticed.QRC_Court4

Dona Gabrielle de Winter was invited to address the Court. She wished to thank her staff and the Shire of King’s Crossing for their assistance in hosting the College of Silva Vulcani’s first royal progress event. She further thanked Her Majesty for attending, and the populace for making the event such a success.

QRC_Court5Murdoch Stewart was summoned to present himself to Her Majesty. Murdoch has jumped right into both fencing and rattan combat with much gusto and aspires to hold the chivalric virtues foremost in his mind. He furthermore volunteered to join Her Majesty’s guard that he might defend her from harm and is frequently seen helping happily. Thus Her Majesty felt moved to Award him Arms. Scroll by Master Jon Blaecstan.

QRC_Court6Her Majesty wished to have words with Niccolo Salvietti. His love of fencing is great. He is often first on the training field and last off of it. He pushed himself to authorize for Queen’s Rapier Championship, that he might expand Her Majesty’s honor by competing. He further is a member of Her Majesty’s guard and assists around the College of Silva Vulcani where needed. Thus he was Awarded Arms. Scroll by Lady Máirghréad Stíobhard inghean uí Choinne.

Dromund Geirhjalmson did catch Her Majesty’s eye, and her subjects had spread word of his mighty deeds, such that it has reached Her noble ears. He is always volunteering to do every task. His love of fencing and rattan is obvious as he strives always to improve his skills. His good mood and enthusiasm permeates everything he does. For this and many more reasons did it please Her Majesty to bestow upon him an Award of Arms. Scroll by Lady Elizabeth of the Bog and Mistress Cynthia Love of the Tower.QRC_Court7

Her Majesty Awarded Arms to Mollie O’Donnell in absentia for her work in sewing garb, and teaching others how to sew garb. Scroll illuminated by Lady Isabel Fleuretan with calligraphy by Kameshima-kyo Zentarō Umakai.

QRC_Court8Dominique Von Weissenthurn was invited to attend her Majesty. Dominique is well known for making hoods and arming caps for the members of the Shire of Ballachlagan. She goes further to teach classes to share with others the skills she is learning. These actions please Her Majesty thus she was moved to bestow upon her an Award of Arms. Scroll calligraphed by Baroness Ekaterina Volkova upon illumination by Gail Hope.

QRC_Court9

Lord Sergei Ratimirov was invited into court. Her Majesty wished to deliver to him the scroll and medallion marking his induction into the Order of the Golden Alce bestowed upon him last week at Her Coronation by Her predecessors Titus and Anna Leigh that he was not present to get directly.

Lord Bjorn Einarsson has shown great skill and enthusiasm for fencing as his skills continue to increase. This pleases Her Majesty thus She inducted Bjorn into the Order of the Golden Alce. Scroll by Dona Fredeburg von Katzenellenbogen.QRC_Court10

Her Majesty wished to continue Her tradition of recognizing one who inspired her this day. On this day of much courtesy and inspiration Lord Jehan Le Blanc did impress Her Majesty with his comportment right from the first bout that she witnessed.QRC_Court11

Her Majesty wished to recognize and thank all who had a hand in making the scrolls for this day, as Æthelmearc has many wondrous scribes, without whom the glory of court would be lessened.

Her Majesty thanked everyone who attended this day and all the fencers who vied to be her Champion. His Majesty wanted to be here, and was here in spirit and is eagerly awaiting the tales of chivalry and honor that arose from this day.

After Court, in the royalty room:
The College of Silva Vulcani wished to present to Her Majesty a gift basket full of the works of their hands.

There being no further business, Her Majesty’s Court was closed.QRC_Finals2
