Court Report, Crown Tourney, Sylvan Glen

From the Scrolls of the Reign of Timothy and Gabrielle, King and Queen of Æthelmearc, as recorded by Dame Kateryna ty Isaf, Jewel of AEthelmearc Herald with the assistance of Lord Arias Beltran del Valle, Misty Highlands Herald and Kameshima-kyō Zentarō Umakai, Silver Buccle Herald, at Their Crown Tournament in the Shire of Sylvan Glen on May 13, Anno Societatis LII.

The Court of Their Majesties, Timothy and Gabrielle was opened.

During the procession:

As Lord Ardden Scot of Clan Scot and his consort, Lady Dierdre Scot of Clan Scot, were presented to Their Majesties for inclusion in the tournament, His Majesty questioned whether Lord Arddenn’s title and station were correct. His herald assured Him that both were as recorded, but if His Majesty believed there to be an error, it was His prerogative to change things to fit His wishes. So counseled, Their Majesties convened the Order of the Gage, granted Arms to The Honorable Lord Arddenn, and admitted him into that company. Scroll illuminated by THL Fiora d’Artusio and calligraphed by Mistress Antoinette de la Croix upon wording by Duke Sir Malcolm Duncan MacEioghann.

At the conclusion of the Tournament:

Their Majesties, Timothy and Gabrielle, accompanied by Their Heirs, Gareth and Juliana, called forth Gui Dai Li. Noting the grace by which she worked quiet service in water bearing and cleaning before and after events, Their Majesties Awarded her Arms and made her a Lady of the AEthelmearc court. The scroll was limned by Ana Ianka Lisitsina with calligraphy by Mistress Antoinette de la Croix.

Later in the Afternoon:

Their Majesties called forth Bekah of Sylvan Glen. For her work in the kitchens and halls of the Kingdom and the joy she takes and bestows from that work, Their Majesties inducted her into the Order of the Silver Sycamore. The scroll was painted by THLady Maeve ni Siurtain with wording composed by Baroness Graidhne ni Ruaidh and calligraphy by Mistress Antoinette de la Croix.

Their Majesties invited before them Mistress Morwenna Trevethan. On behalf of Their Majesties of Atlantia, Cuan and Signy, she presented Their Majesties with a gift and affirmed Their Majesties’ wishes to be comrades in arms for the coming War.

Their Majesties, noting the sad news of the passing of more than one member of the Society in the past few weeks, asked that the court observe a moment of silence for absent friends and the families of those gentles impacted by their loss.

Marcus

Their Majesties invited before Them the Ladies of the Rose, Garnet, and Edelweiss. Countess Caryl, speaking on behalf of the Ladies of the Rose, Garnet, and Edelweiss, stated they had much to deliberate this day. To that end they had resolved to provide tokens to two individuals who impressed them greatly in their conduct in the lists. They requested the presence of Sir Bye, otherwise known well as Sir Luis de Castilla.  Remarking on the joy his fights had been to witness and the fact that they wished he would relocate into the Sylvan Kingdom, they awarded him a Rose’s token, gifted by the hand of Countess Alexandra. Next they requested the presence of Duke Marcus Eisenwald.  Stating that his behavior upon the field was the embodiment of all that it means to be a knight, they also awarded him a Rose’s token, gifted by the hand of Countess Caryl.

The Order of the Rose, Garnet and Edelweiss advised Their Majesties of the final duty they needed to perform this day. They called forth THLord Oliver Sutton. They advised that watching him they were confident in their choice and asked him to bear the Shield of Chivalry for them. His Lordship agreed and was asked to take up their shield and be their champion.

Their Majesties called forth Benjamin of Heronter. Their Majesties knowing that They are well served by this man both on the fencing field and in his labors whenever needed, They made him a Lord of the court and Awarded him Arms. The scroll to mark this is a work of embroidery in progress designed by Baroness Graidhne ni Ruaidh.

Their Majesties called forth Lady Mara of Hartstone. Content that her skills with knives grace both Their kitchens and Their throwing fields and mindful of the service she provides at both places as well as her work as a Royal Retainer, They inducted her into the Order of the Keystone.

Their Majesties called forth Lord Tiberius of Sylvan Glen. Their Majesties called before Them THLord Grimolfr Ormalfrson. They advised that there are times when They are surprised to find a person is not speaking in Their orders only to find the person was somehow not a member of such order. Such is the case today and they would see this corrected. They called forth the Order of the White Horn. For his work in creating the rules for and teaching the Kingdom the use of the atlatl, They inducted him into the Order of the White Horn. The scroll was painted by Mistress Maria Christina de Cordoba with wording and calligraphy by Baroness Graidhne ni Ruaidh.

Their Majesties called forth Lady Isabel Fleuretan. They spoke of how They had seen her work for both Their previous times upon the thrones as a scribe toiling to complete or correct a scroll on the day it was being given, so as to ensure the recipient received the commemoration immediately. They advised her that it was the privilege of the Crown to recognize such nobility and let it be known that They granted her the station of Court Baroness so that all may see the value they placed in her loving work. The scroll forthcoming is a work in progress by Baroness Alex.

Their Majesties invited before Them Kameshima-kyō Zentarō Umakai, Silver Buccle Herald. Before he was able to step down from his office as Principle Herald of the Kingdom of Æthelmearc, Their Majesties advised that They wished to correct the Title he was using. Speaking of how he had served the Kingdom for 4 years traveling to about 20 events per reign to ensure Their Majesties courts were heralded and giving up his free time and working tirelessly to ensure the continuity of the court, Their Majesties made him a Baron of the Court of AEthelmearc. The scroll forthcoming is a work in progress by Magistra Sólveig Þróndardóttir.

Kameshima CB

Baron Kameshima asked that with Their Majesties permission he may continue and requested the attendance of the Brotherhood of Old Buccles comma Silver (BoOB,s).  As has become custom, the BoOB,s presented him with his life back (cautioning him not to indulge overmuch as the said box of Life had expired in 2002) and then presented his wife, Baroness Isabel Fleuretan with her life back as well. Baron Kameshima correcting the BoOB,s presentation politely removed the life from his and his wife’s hands and presented them instead to their daughter advising that truly she is the one who gets her life back to the great amusement of the court. Their Majesties confirming that he had a worthy successor called forth THLady Sophie Davenport. The BoOB,s then divested him of the Tabard signifying his office. As his last act as Silver Buccle Herald, Baron Kameshima placed the Tabard of Silver Buccle Herald upon THLady Sophie’s shoulders.

Sylvan Glen, Twelfth Night

All photos courtesy of Lady Elektra of Sylvan Glen.

Documented from the Scrolls of the Reign of Marcus & Margerite, King and Queen of Æthelmearc: the Business of Her Majesty at Sylvan Glen Twelfth Night, February 4th, Anno Societatis LI, in the Shire of Sylvan Glen. As recorded by Maestro Orlando di Bene del Vinta, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald.

Her Majesty invited the youth known as Thomas Bronhulle, the event’s King of Misrule, to join Her in Her court.

Her Majesty called for Tiberius of Sylvan Glen, the day’s co-autocrat, who made several announcements, offered thanks for those in attendance and for those who provided support and service, and also announced the winners from the day’s varied competitions. However, at the conclusion of his announcement, Her Royal Majesty bade Tiberius linger a moment longer. She spoke of his leadership and service to his shire and offered Her praise for his excellent efforts as first time co-autocrat alongside his mother, Lady Reina Dulcedame. Thus, She did Award him Arms and raise him to the ranks of the nobility. Scroll forthcoming.sylvanglen

Next, Her Majesty called for Niño of Sylvan Glen and thanked him for all of his helpfulness and service, despite his young age and small size, and She did bestow upon him a Silver Buccle. Scroll forthcoming.

Lord Daniel Rufus was next called before the Sylvan Throne, and his wife Lady Eleanor of Pembroke came forward in his stead. Her Majesty spoke of the courtesy, kindness, and chivalry displayed by Lord Rufus, and that these are values that are highly prized by the Society, and thus She did bestow upon him a Cornelian. Scroll forthcoming.buccle

Her Majesty then sought words with Lady Umm Samin bint Asad al-Isfahaniyya. Her Majesty stated that She had heard much praise of Lady Samin’s work. Her Majesty spoke of Lady Samin’s work as the webminister for Sylvan Glen, and Herself found the webpage to be well maintained and attractive. Her Majesty then inducted Lady Samin into the Order of the Keystone for this service. Scroll forthcoming.

However, Her Majesty stated that Her business was not yet complete with Lady Samin, and reiterated that She had indeed received many words of praise of Lady Samin. Her Majesty told of the reports of Samin’s artistry, and that Her Majesty had witnessed Samin’s skill this very day when viewing the A&S display where several works of art with accompanying documentation by Lady Samin could be viewed. Thus, Her Majesty was moved to induct Lady Samin into the Order of Sycamore. Scroll forthcoming.

etainTHLady Etain Eame was next called to attend Her Majesty. Her Ladyship’s years of quite service to her shire and to the kingdom as autocrat, head cook, seneschal, head tollner, kingdom NMS secretary, and more were noted. Seeing these years of service could not go unrecognized, Her Majesty called forth the Order of the Millrind, and inducted THLady Etain into that Order. Scroll forthcoming.

Next, Her Majesty invited forward all children. She noted to the King of Misrule that earlier in the day he used Her herald for his court, and so in return, She asked His Majesty Misrule to carry the chest of toys for Her so that the children might select a gift.

Her Majesty then called forward Lord Arthur of Linden from the Kingdom of Atlantia. She spoke of his A&S entry and how impressive was his detail and skill, and so named him Her Inspiration and bestowed upon him a Golden Escarbuncle.

There being no further business, this court of Her Majesty was closed.

Faithfully submitted,

Maestro Orlando di Bene del Vinta

Is your area full of boxes of cereal, pasta, jars of peanut butter, and jugs of bottled water you can’t remember buying? Never fear! The annual Paladin’s Pantry Food Drive is here to help by conveying your extra food and drink to local food banks. Just drop any unopened foodstuffs or beverages (no alcohol, please) at our handy collection point in the Dining Hall or call or text to 304-283-5640 to schedule a pick up, and one of our faithful minions will come by your camp to collect your much-appreciated largesse! Exercise your charity, lighten your load, and help members of the community that has made us so welcome over the years! Please direct any questions or requests for donation pick-ups to Morien MacBain (Stephen Vandevander) at 304-283-5640.

Some Fun Æthelmearc Websites

archery, bards, Debatable Lands, Delftwood, demos, earl marshal, fencing, Heraldry, King's Crossing, Links, map, scribes, Sylvan Glen, Thescorre

Just about every Shire, Canton, and Barony in Æthelmearc has a website, as do many other groups like the scribes, heralds, and marshals. Many have useful resources, interesting information, or fun photos or stories. Here are some highlights:

Thescorre armsBarony of Thescorre: known as the “Industrious Barony of Thescorre,” their website includes a wonderful manual on how to present various types of demos, many aimed at school children. Three gentles from Thescorre, Mistress Daedra McBeth a Gryphon, Mistress Sadira bint Wassouf, and Lady Cerridwyn of Raventree, call themselves the Academic Demo & Educational Presentations Team (or ADEPT). Their manual covers all kinds of demos that the SCA can present, including Displays, Bardic Circles, Talk Panels, and “Taking a Persona to School.” The ADEPT Handbook can be downloaded as a single file or viewed by section on the baronial website.

DelftwoodBarony of Delftwood: The Barony known for its Windmill has a beautifully designed recruiting brochure that does a great job of explaining what the Society is and does. They also have a page called A&S Handouts that includes articles on various topics like “Turnshoes” by Sir Óláfr Þorvarðarson, “Plying Your Homespun Yarn” by Lady Genevieve de Chaumont, and many articles on costuming by  Meisterin Felicitas Flußmüllnerin.

Shire of Coppertree: this shire, located east of Delftwood, has a storied past and is populated by many notable peers of the realm. Speaking of stories, on the shire website there’s a humorous one about the origins of the name of their Shire herald, the Red Squid Pursuivant.

Shire of Sylvan Glen: The southeastern-most shire in the Kingdom has a wonderful page for the Sylvan Glen Scriptorium with an enormous array of useful information for scribes, including links to sites with period manuscripts, or instructional materials on how to paint in various styles or do various calligraphic hands, as well as line drawings that can be used to create scroll blanks.

Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands: the Meetings & Activities page has links to separate pages for each of the regular activities offered in the Barony – not just when and where practices and workshops are held, but photos and detailed information including things like videos of choir performances, information on how to build youth combat armor and weapons, and links to related websites on heraldic resources or scribal standards from the baronial signet.

Shire of King’s Crossing: their website includes something every new Scadian needs: a Lexicon called “Good Grief, what do they mean by that?” This article explains the mysteries of words like Chirurgeon, Seneschal, Porta-castle and Troll Booth.

Kingdom of Æthelmearc: of course the Kingdom website has all kinds of useful information, including the Kingdom calendar, lists of Kingdom officers and royalty, links to local groups, and contacts for polling orders and mailing lists. But to my mind the most useful page is the Online Award Recommendation Form. If you know people who are doing great things for your group, whether in martial arts, service, or as artisans, then you should recommend them for appropriate awards. You don’t have to possess an award to recommend someone for it.

AE Kingdom

Æthelmearc Heralds: before you write that award recommendation, check the Order of Precedence on the Kingdom’s College of Heralds website to see what awards the person already has. Under Tools and Links, you can find a link to the Awards of Æthelmearc which can help you understand which awards to recommend your friends for. The Roll of Arms is a great place to find the registered names and Arms of the citizens of AEthelmearc, so if you’re handy with needle and thread and want to give a friend a gift, consider making them a banner using the image on the roll of arms!

AERapierÆthelmearc Rapier Combat: you can read the Kingdom Rapier rules, see a list of the White Scarfs of Æthelmearc and learn about the history of the order, find out who the past Kingdom Rapier Champions are all the way back to the founding of the Kingdom, and access links to all things rapier-related.

Æthelmearc Earl Marshal: for links to all things martial, whether heavy weapons, rapier, thrown weapons, target and combat archery, equestrian, youth combat, or siege, this is your best starting place.

Æthelmearc Archery Scores: want to see your current Royal Round average, learn how to run an IKAC, or find out who the Grandmaster Bowmen of the Kingdom are? This is your site. It’s actually a “child” site under an SCA-wide archery site, but the scores for Æthelmearc are maintained by the Kingdom Archery Scorekeeper.

Æthelmearc College of Bards: this site lists bards from all over the Kingdom, the history of bardic arts in Æthelmearc, lyrics and audio files of original songs about our Kingdom, and links to sites of bardic interest.

AEBards

Æthelmearc College of Scribes: this site offers an array of resources for calligraphers and illuminators, including a list of current scribes, links to resources for scribes, the policies of the Kingdom Signet, and the Red Book that provides guidelines, advice, and scroll wordings for scribes.

Map of Æthelmearc: this site superimposes a map of Æthelmearc on a map of the U.S. You can zoom in and click an area on the map to see a pop-up window listing the name of the Shire, Canton, or Barony in that area, along with its region and a link to its website, if available.
