Unto the Known World does the Barony of Thescorre send Greetings!

DO you miss playing in an SCA kitchen with other cooks? Are you sad you won’t be able to sit down to yet another famous College of Three Ravens feast prepared by the Cauldron Bleu Cooks Guild?

We, members of the Barony’s 43-year-old cooks guild, invite you to join us in celebrating our favorite past time; we cordially invite all who are interested in helping us prepare a virtual feast for this year’s C3R.

While we cannot have this event in person, we are provided with the perfect opportunity to have ALL OF YOU “in the kitchen” with us! We are currently choosing period recipes from our favorite places and times, with absolutely no respect given to any semblance of order or plan for a “menu” (this is still a pandemic folks – we can’t be THAT organized).

We have been redacting, cooking, and photographing or video recording our endeavors and sharing them with all of you throughout this month right up until the event on February 28. Our hope is to have quite a fun time learning redactions, techniques, and sharing in each others’ tables.

What we would like from you:

Join the Cook-Along-At-Home Feast page on Facebook. We invite you to choose your own items that you love or have always wanted to make, redact (or choose a redaction that you like, or work with someone you know to create the redacted recipe).

Post your medieval recipe(s), your redaction(s), your process, your photos, videos, etc. Whatever you would like to share with everyone. MISTAKES ARE WELCOME. Please share as you go through the process and PLEASE do not leave out what didn’t work. We are here to learn, to enjoy cooking, and to share with those we love. No one is perfect and food can be pretty, but let’s hear about all of it – the good, the bad, and the ugly. There are no parameters except that you choose an item that interests you and that you work safely (please do not break any rules handed down from the BOD about social distance, etc. This is meant to be done safely in your own space, not as a get- together.)

You are welcome (and encouraged) to safely drop off test batches or extra surplus foods created to your neighbors and local friends, whether SCA or not.

Let’s have some fun! This is open to the entire Known World, so feel free to share far and wide – If you cannot share, but would still like to participate, please email the info to our webminister and she will update for you: webminister AT thescorre DOT org. Just let her know your name and any info you’d like in the post so she can properly credit.

So far, we have honey-glazed carrots and Boxing Day coffins, among other dishes. Thank you to everyone who is cooking along at home with us!

This winter, join the Barony of Thescorre at our annual schola as we move our festivities to a virtual space for the year’s C3R…. The COVID Corvid College of Three Ravens!

We are gathering together on Saturday, February 27, 2021 and using Zoom, Facebook, and our Barony Website to organize and run the event! While we are still physically distanced from one another, this is an opportunity to join in classes, A&S, workshops, bardic activties, feasting, and court from the safety of our homes.

This year, we are celebrating all that we love about the SCA and we have the unique opportunity to share that love with any and all who want to participate. We hope that this virtual format will allow gentles from Æthelmearc and the Knowne World entire to join in our fun as we work to learn together and come together in the safest ways possible.

Pax is happening tomorrow and Saturday!

Over the past four months, nearly all current and near-future events and practices across the Known World have been cancelled or postponed due to the COVID19 pandemic.

The Barony of Thescorre, however, rather than cancelling its annual summer camping event, Pax Interruptus, decided to move it online to offer a virtual event this weekend.

Although there cannot be in-person heavy fighting, fencing, archery, and thrown weapons as the event has boasted for almost 40 years, there will be online classes, some drumming, a bardic circle, a baronial court, and videos to celebrate past Pax events and Thescorre history throughout the day on Saturday. Numerous Thescorreans provided photographs for the nostalgic slideshows.

For those of you desperately missing the opportunity to see friends and hang out as you normally do at the event, there will be open socializing time available throughout Saturday.

On Friday, the Barony will host a concert by the international minstrel group Wolgemut, famous and well loved for its performances at SCA events like Pennsic and Gulf Wars as well as numerous Renaissance faires and events throughout the world.

Further, to support the merchants who normally offer their wares at the event, there will be a virtual merchants row.

The event will take place in several rooms on Zoom.

According to Their Excellencies Eldjarn and Dubheasa:

It’s important for our SCA community to continue having opportunities to interact, even when required to be physically separate. We may not be able to have our usual martial activities, but we can still see, socialize, and learn from each other. It’s a time to reminisce and continue to acknowledge the contributions of our populace. Sharing goodwill and appreciation is critical to the emotional well-being of many while we must isolate away from our friends and family. We would much rather do so face to face, but for the time being at least, this is what we can do safely. Come join us this weekend.

14th century parti-colored cotehardie history and construction. Have you ever wanted to know a bit about the history of those lovely multi-color dresses we see folks wearing at events? Ever wanted to display your heraldry in an absolutely stunning fashion? Ever wanted to hide geeky references to your favorite things in some of the most comfortable garb you’ll ever own? Come on over to the cotehardie class!

Creating a parti-colored cotehardie with handmade fabric buttons may be just the project you need to undertake. We’ll chat a bit about the history and documentation behind the construction of a parti-colored cotehardie and then I’ll walk through the steps in constructing the garment and how to add little bits of heraldry or other fun moments into your garb (like my Gryffindor-themed red and gold cotehardie). I’ll happily talk through the process as well as how the steps of construction of the dress can also be used to create a parti-colored tunic as well.

The class will discuss history, documentation, the steps to create, and even the hand-sewing techniques that will help your clothing hold up for years of events.

Merchants Row

Finally, the pandemic has taken a huge toll on merchants throughout the Society for Creative Anachronism, many of whom make a majority of their livelihoods at spring and summer events each year. In order to support them and provide visibility, the Barony is hosting a virtual Merchants Row.

No login information will be released through any public social media channels in order to prevent scammers from joining the Zoom rooms.

Recent Lecture Shares Current Research on Gough Map

The Rochester Institute of Technology Center for Imaging Science hosted a lecture on January 23, 2019 by Dr. David Messinger, Director of the Center, and his PhD students, Di Bai and Morteza Maali Amiri, on the Gough Map, the oldest-known surviving map of Great Britain (dated to approximately 1410 C.B.E., completion date).

The lecture discussed recent work performed to learn more about the origins, materials, tools, and uses of the map. The work has been a collaboration between the R.I.T. team and David Howell of the Bodleian Library at Oxford University where the map is housed, Andy Beebe of the University of Durham, and Catherine Delano-Smith and Damien Bove of the University of London (a group composed of physicists/image scientists, a chemist, a material scientist, and two map historians, respectively).

The Gough Map shows all of England and Scotland and part of Ireland. Robert Gough bequeathed it in 1809 to Oxford after acquiring it from the estate of Thomas “Honest Tom” Martin. The map measures about 115 x 56 cm (45 x 22 inches), which is very large for a manuscript of this era. The parchment is about two-thirds sheepskin and one-third lambskin. The seam joining the two can be seen running across Scotland.

The R.I.T. team’s role was to use a nondestructive technique called hyperspectral imaging spectroscopy (which entails hundreds of colors of light as opposed to the red/blue/green light that digital or phone cameras employ) and a lot of sophisticated mathematics while consulting with the greater team to determine what the materials of the pigments and inks were composed of and which areas of the map contained what materials. To achieve this end, the R.I.T. team traveled to Oxford in 2016 and will continue studies there this summer focusing in more detail on the inks.

Henry IV was king at the time of the map’s creation. It includes 654 place names shown as text in boxes or cartouches. What originally appeared to be roads on the map has proven to be distances between these places. However, the reason for gathering this distance data and how it was used remains a mystery.

There are various characters on the map including fish, sea monsters, and boats, and text such as “where King Arthur landed.” These objects and text can be seen in detail at the interactive, searchable version at www.TheGoughMap.

All of the churches and buildings on the map are identical and are illuminated over four pin holes. It is surmised that a template, as was then common in monastic illumination, was used to draw them and held in place by the holes.

The map was extensively revised after about 100 years of use. Further phases of study will be aimed at determining what materials appear to be different due to aging of the original materials or because they were added during later revisions and/or are indeed different pigments or inks.

During the 1600s, there was some damage to the map. The owner was told the text would be restored if he applied red wine on a sponge to those areas. This actually worked for a few weeks and then, due to chemical reactions, completely destroyed the text and images on those areas of the map. This hyperspectral technique was used to reveal the text and illumination that was removed from the map manuscript.

The map has also been featured in Imago Mundi, a cartography magazine whose editor is Dr. Delano Smith , one of the scientists. They are sponsoring a conference this summer and panel on the map seating Dr. Messinger.

The hyperspectral analysis revealed that the Hadrian’s Wall on the map was not composed of the same material as the red text writing. Analysis initially showed there were two different pigments. Further analysis showed that they were both vermillion pigment, however the text was done with no binder and a quill pen whereas the wall was done with a brush and a binder (such as egg white) had been added to the vermillion. Five unique red pigments were identified in use on the map.

Not only do the pigments appear different depending on how they were mixed, they appear different on the various substrates such as sheepskin versus. lambskin parchment.

The R.I.T. team identified five unique green pigments for the open waterways. Were they used to denote tides? Crossing spots? River depths?

They also identified five unique green pigments for the for inland waterways. Were they used for labels? Town signs? Distance markers?

The answers to these questions remain unknown at this time.

The map was created in three phases starting in 1360 C.B.E: first, the outline of Great Britain and Scotland, second, the other towns, and lastly, London.

Regarding the green pigments, one is a mixture of indigo (also known as woad) and a yellow pigment, but hyperspectral analysis showed the yellow is not orpiment. It is an organic yellow. However, it is not believed to be saffron due to the expense. Another possibility is buckthorn yellow and studies in this area will continue. Further analysis discovered verdigris or copper-based green pigment. This discovery was due to the R.I.T team’s work and a new algorithm they developed. The same technique will be used to separate which areas of the map employ iron gall and carbon inks.

There are years of additional analysis and discovery planned for the map and other historical documents including minimizing light exposure from the imaging analysis to avoid possible long term damage, how to analyze pigments by “unmixing” them spectrally, using hyperspectral fluorescence to recover text and damaged areas, automating the process to identify pigments, and creating an affordable imaging system (the two systems at R.I.T. cost about $50,000 each; the goal is $2,000 per unit).

Rochester, N.Y., located in the Barony of Thescorre in AEthelmearc, is establishing itself as the world center for recovery of historical documents, whether they have been damaged by age, smoke, or water or are palimpsests (which are documents where the original text was scraped off from the parchment or other substrate and new text and or illumination applied). The Rochester Cultural Heritage Imaging, Visualization and Education (R-CHIVE) group meets alternately at R.I.T. and the University of Rochester and is a collaboration of university researchers and students from across the globe. Court Report: Pax Interruptus XLII

The account of the court of Sven, King of Æthelmearc, held at Pax Interruptus and Baronial Investiture, July 7, AS 53 (2018) in the Barony of Thescorre, reported by Baroness Ekaterina Volkova, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald.

Morning Court:

After court was opened, His Majesty invited Baroness Sadira bint Wassouf to join him.  After joining the court, Her Excellency told a brief story to the assembled and asked that we keep Princess Anna Leigh and the friends and family of Prince Titus, who had unexpectedly passed away, in their thoughts.

His Majesty then gave Her Excellency leave to hold her court.

At the conclusion of her court, Her Excellency asked permission of His Majesty to retire as Baroness of Thescorre. His Majesty, wishing to know the desires of the Barony, called for Mistress Matilda Bosvyle de Bela Acqua, Seneschal of the Barony of Thescorre. She announced that the Barony was aware that Her Excellency wished to retire and had a vote. She then presented a petition signed by the members of the Barony asking that Her Excellency be allowed to retire and that they had selected two to sit the throne of the Barony.

His Majesty, hearing the wishes of the populace, agreed that Her Excellency had served well and long and deserved to return to her Oasis. Her Excellency thanked His Majesty and the good people she had served. She then returned the Coronet of Thescorre into the keeping of the Crown and made way to join the caravan of camels that had appeared. However, His Majesty was not quite ready to send her on her way.  He stated that before she took the Coronet of Thescorre, she was a Baroness in her own right and wished it be known that He wished her to retain that rank. The Tale of Sadira was then read to all. Book made, illuminated and calligraphed by THL Abigail Kelhoge, story by Daedez of the Dark Horde Moritu.

But his Majesty was not quite done and said he felt that Her Excellency Sadira deserved something more.  It was then announced that she was given the right to Augment her Arms.  Scroll by THL Mary Elizabeth Clason upon words by Mistress Mahin Banu Tabrizi.

Her Excellency then departed amid a whirl of camels and dancers to the warm lands of her ancestors.

It was then noted that the Lands of Thescorre could not go unprotected.  Lord Eldjarn the Thoughtful and Lady Dubheasa inghean Dubgaill were then called before the court.  They were informed that the people of the Barony had requested that they be invested as the next Baron and Baroness of Thescorre.

His Majesty asked if they agreed to the responsibility, which they did.  After accepting their Oaths, His Majesty then invested them as Baron and Baroness of Thescorre.   The lineage of the Barony was then read.

After court was resumed, His Majesty spoke of the great hospitality of the Barony of Thescorre and how much he enjoyed running around the field of battle with everyone.

He then spoke of Prince Titus and how the Kingdom had lost someone dear to them.  He then asked for a moment of silence in honor of the fallen Prince.

Their Excellencies were given leave to hold their court.

When Court resumed, the children present at the event were invited forward and invited to go to the toy box at the back of court and select a toy as a reward for sitting through court.

His Majesty then remarked of one who had such great enthusiasm on the fencing field this day that he wanted to make sure all knew her name and instructed people to seek out Ania Mhoireach.

The members of the Order of the Fleur d’Æthelmearc were then invited into court.  His Majesty said that while there were many members of the Order present, he felt that the Order was not complete.  Lord Justin Lymner was then called forth and inducted into the order for his knowledge in many diverse arts.  Scroll by THL Helena Mutzhasenin.

His Majesty then spoke of how one of the great joys he has as King is getting to see the work of the artisans of the Kingdom and that the scribes most inspire him as they spend hours on their art, only to give it away.  He then asked those that have created a scroll in the last year to stand and be recognized.

There being no further business, the court of His Majesty, Sven, was then closed.

The drums of war call all warriors to join the Barony of Thescorre as we prepare for battle at our annual Pax Interruptus camping event.

Join us as we celebrate the investituture of our 9th Baroness and Baron, Lady Dubheasa inghean Dubgaill and Lord Eldjarn the Thoughtful, by their Sylan Majesties, July 6 to 8, 2018, at Genesee Country Campground, 40 Flint Hill Rd., Caledonia, NY 14423. The site opens at 3 pm Friday and closes at noon on Sunday.

We will have both heavy weapons and fencing melees, archery, and thrown weapons during Saturday to show the martial prowess of our Kingdom as we get ready for War. A revelry of song and storytelling at night will complete the celebrations. In addition, on Friday, a torchlight tourney will be held at dusk.

Day visitors are encouraged to bring pavilions for shade. Merchants are welcome at no additional charge, but must bring their own setup.

Open flames are also allowed, and fires can be built in the designated areas of the campground. Please be advised that fires are permitted only within existing fire rings. This site is discreetly damp.

The field and camping area do not have water; please plan to bring enough water to meet your needs.

Dogs are permitted on leash with proof of license and vaccinations, to be presented upon check in, and must be cleaned up after. Trash must be disposed of in the dumpster by the camp store before leaving site; bins for recycling are also available. The camp store carries some groceries, ice, and wood. It is located in the same building as the flush toilets and showers.

A light sideboard lunch will be provided by proficient hands of Robert of Thescorre and Lady Fauna. Lunch is limited to 100 gentles and is PRE-REGISTER ONLY, so please pre-register soon to reserve your lunch.

The menu is a Roman travelers repast:

  • Antipasti (with cheese, dried dates and apricots, raisins and olives)
  • Stuffed eggs
  • Pickles
  • Homemade Lucanicae smoked sausages
  • Bread, both gluten filled and gluten free

Ingredients lists available soon. (Menu and Ingredients are subject to change do to price and availability at time of purchase).

There will be no feast at night. Please plan accordingly. Please alert the head cook, Robert of Thescorre of any allergies or food restrictions.

Fees:

  • Adult Event Registration is $15
  • Adult Member Discount Event Registration is $10
  • Youth 6-17 Event Registration is $5
  • Children 5 and younger are free.
  • Lunch will be available for an additional $4, but you must register in advance.

Thescorre’s College of Three Ravens has gotten a facelift for 2018! The Barony’s staple schola event (over 30 years old, formerly UWEKAT and UAKAT) will be held at a new location next month: St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Hilton, NY, just half an hour from downtown Rochester. The site includes a gymnasium for fencing and heavy weapons classes and sparring.

February 24th will see more classes and activities than the event has had in years. Classes on many topics will be filling the nine classrooms and dedicated scriptorium from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (See current class list below.)

The school just completed renovations this past summer and now all classrooms have ceiling-mounted projection systems. There is also a sink in each room. Previously, there were two larger classrooms. The renovations saw one room permanently split, resulting in an extra room which gives us private space for holding a third vigil. The remaining larger classroom will be dedicated to dance or other subjects requiring a little extra floor space.

What does the new facility lack? Stairs!!

The gym, a respectable-sized main hall, classrooms, scriptorium, and three vigil rooms are all on one level for complete ease of access. The Royalty room is even conveniently placed across the hall from the scribal room.

The school includes three sets of restrooms spaced throughout the T-shaped site, with two sets offering diaper changing stations. The third set alongside the gym is adjacent to a pair of small, locker/changing rooms equipped with two adult-height shower stalls each. One shower in each Lords’ & Ladies’ conveniently has a fold-down shower seat and wand shower head.

Off-street parking is extensive, boasting four separate parking lots totaling approximately 200+ spaces. SCA attendees will be using the larger west lot that fits 98 cars, as well as two other parking areas reserved for the convenience of event staff, vigil coordinators, and Royalty. That still leave us with some overflow in the more distant areas of the parishioners lot, should it be absolutely necessary.

The main hall features 18 tables of eight, and its own exterior entrance apart from the one leading directly into the adjoining kitchen. Our lunch and feast cooks, Lady Ragna Feilan and Lady Lasairfhiona inghean Aindriasa, have been raving about the kitchen space just from seeing photos and are eager to fill many bellies with their delicious-sounding planned meals.

Outside the main hall are large windows letting in sunlight near benches where gentles may sit and chat. There is even room for several merchants should anyone wish to set up a table to display their wares. There are one or two already signed up; contact the Autocrat if interested.

Unfortunately for us, the church holds a small Saturday service in their 400-seat nave/chancel, which conflicts with our traditional Court time. However, the spacious gym with its movable bleachers will be ample room for our pageantry! The gym is also at the opposite end of the site, so SCAdians and parishioners will not disrupt each other. I’ve no idea what spectacle may be planned for the elevation of Gillian Llwelyn to the Laurel and elevations of Nest Verch Rys and Rioghnach ní Rose to the Pelican, but such will doubtless be a delight to witness.

It would be neglectful of me to fail to mention the sprawling outdoor athletic fields, though snow-covered in February, are capable of simultaneously accommodating all martial activities including target archery at future events in warmer seasons.

The site administrators have been exceedingly friendly and interested in our medieval activities. Let us hope we can build a mutually respectful relationship with the school and continue to have access to the site for years to come!

Please consider braving the wintry temperatures and roads to come make this College of Three Ravens an extraordinarily enjoyable day of learning, socializing, eating, and plain chivalrous fun.

From the Scrolls of the Reign of Timothy and Gabrielle, King and Queen of AEthelmearc, as recorded by Dame Kateryna ty Isaf, Jewel of AEthelmearc Herald with the assistance of THLady Sophie Davenport, Silver Buccle Herald and THFool Dagonell the Juggler at Pax Interruptus in the Barony of Thescorre on July 8, Anno Societatis LII.

The Court of Their Majesties, Timothy and Gabrielle began in the morning.

Their Majesties called forth Katherina von Bamberg to present her as a Lady of the Court upon the will of Their predecessors, King Marcus and Queen Margerite who had given her an Award of Arms during the previous reign.

Their Majesties called Baroness Juliana Rosalia Dolce de Siena to ask her if she had made a decision to accept Their invitation to sit vigil this day to contemplate induction to the most noble Order of the Pelican.  They invited before Them Don Behrend von Elmendorf and Mistress Sthurrim Caithnes who had business with Baroness Julianna before she would be able to give an answer unencumbered by prior oaths.  Don Behrend accepted back his cadet scarf and Mistress Sthurrim her apprentice belt.   Baroness Julianna then confirmed her willingness to sit vigil and Their Majesties invited forth those members of the Order of the Pelican present to take her forth and give her good counsel.

In the afternoon Their Majesties gave leave to Her Excellency Sadira of Thescorre to hold Baronial court.

At the conclusion of the Baronial court, Their Majesties invited THFool Dagonell the Juggler to come forth.  His Foolishness asked that Their Majesties and the court please honor the life of his friend Brandric Slaywrock.  Their Majesties agreed and a moment of silence was observed.

Their Majesties invited Their Heir, Prince Gareth to speak before the court.  His Highness asked Lady Lasairfhiona Inghean Aindraisa to please come forth and presented her with tokens for Aethelmearc Royal hospitality at the Great Pennsic War.

Their Majesties called forth Carter of Thescorre.  For his many works of service, setting up tents, cooking in the kitchens and hauling all manner of equipment to where it is useful, Their Majesties inducted him into the Order of the Silver Buccle.  The scroll by Mistress Roberta Rhiannon McMorland.

Their Majesties called forth the rest of the children present.  They asked that Alton of Misty Highlands to take the toy chest and run from the court.  The children were instructed, once they caught Alton, to take one toy each, beginning with the youngest child present.  After a countdown the children gave chase.

Their Majesties called forth Serafina Kowalewska.  Noting that youthfulness does not preclude the hard work done by this fine lady, Their Majesties awarded her Arms and made her a Lady of the court for all the work she does in the kitchen and service of high table.  Scroll created by the hands of THL Sophie Davenport.

Their Majesties invited into the court Duke James Ahern.  For his works in teaching many how to fashion armor, opening up his home and his shop to create excellent works pieces of martial gear, They inducted him into the Order of the Sycamore.  Scroll by Mistress Roberta Rhiannon McMorland.

Their Majesties called before Them Lord Colnneach Mac an Leigh.  Knowledge of Elizabethan garb and the teaching of the proper construction of a button or ruff should never go unrecognized and so Their Majesties inducted him into the Order of the Sycamore.  The scroll was a work from the hand of Mistress Gillian Llywellyn.

Their Majesties called forth Lord Waldyslaw Poznanski.  Remarking upon his skill in upon the field of combat, Their Majesties inducted him into the Order of the Golden Alce.  Scroll by Lady Isabella Montoya.

Their Majesties called forth Lord Wolfgang Starke and Lady Katherine Starke.  Their Majesties remarked upon the faithful service both had given to the Kingdom and asked the Order of the Millrind to attend Them.  For their willingness to travel to work wherever their hands are needed and for their ceaseless toil to better our Kingdom and Society, Their Majesties inducted both into the Order with a Grant of Arms.  Scroll for THL Wolfgang Starke was created by THL Mary Elizabeth Clausen and the scroll for Katherine Starke was a work in progress by Don Po Silvertop.

Their Majesties invited Mistress Ysabeau Tiercelin into Their presence.  She begged leave to present her Protégé with her belt to mark the renewal of their formal relationship.  Given leave, she asked that Baroness Elisabeth Johanna von der Flossenburg to come forward and take again her belt so that all might know her to be a worthy protégé.  Their Majesties hearing these words, suggested that there might be a more fitting mark of her station and invited before them the most noble Order of the Pelican.  They instructed Baroness Elisabeth to present herself to Their Heirs to sit vigil in contemplation of induction into said order.

Their Majesties called forth Baroness Juliana Rosalia Dolce de Siena.   Receiving her answer that she wished to proceed, They asked for those who would speak to her worthiness to be inducted to the Order of the Pelican.  Mistress Cori Ghora spoke on behalf of the Order of the Pelican, Mistress Othindisa Bykona for the Order of the Laurel, Her Grace, Sir Rowan de la Garnison on behalf of the Order of the Chivalry, and Master Benedict Fergus atte Mede for the Order of Defense.  Baroness Nest verch Rys spoke words written by Duchess Meirwen uerch Owein as a Royal Peer and THLady Zosia Kowalewska spoke on behalf of the populace.  All praised her for the work she has done for two decades within the Society speaking movingly of how she is always there, always helping and always kind.

Having heard these exemplary words in support of the Baroness, Their Majesties determined They would proceed.  The ancestral medallion of the Pelicans of Aethelmearc was place around her neck.  A personal medallion was also presented to her.   A capelet was placed upon her shoulders to mark her station.  Their Majesties accepted her oath of service and confirmed her as a member of the most noble Order of the Pelican with a Patent of Arms.  The scroll is a work in progress by Mistress Yvainne d’ Castel.

Their Majesties called forth Baron Caleb Reynolds.  For his enthusiasm and skill in brewing, They inducted him into the Order of the Fleur d’Aethelmearc.  The scroll created by Lady Edana the Red.

Their Majesties thanked all the scribes who contributed to the works presented this day.

Her Majesty then requested the presence of Baroness Graidhne ni Ruaidh.  Speaking on how often her name was read throughout the courts during Their Reign, She stated there could be no other inspiration for the day than the Baroness and presented to her a Golden Escarbuncle.

There being no further business this day, the court of Their Majesties concluded.

What will you be eating there?
Glad you asked…

A talented group of head cooks who have not yet cooked a lunch (or a lunch in Thescorre) have planned a delicious menu of portable period items, under Mistress Bryn’s menu guidance and Baroness Katja’s logistical cat-herding.

Each cook has been responsible for choosing and cooking one or more of the recipes. Please welcome Duchess Branwyn ferch Gwythyr, Lady Cairistiona Symon, Lady Dubheasa inghean Dubgaill, Lord Eldjarn the Thoughtful, Lady Khalekin Erbekei (Talia of Thescorre), and Lady Lasairfhiona inghean Aindriasa.

Lunch is preregister only and limited to 100 gentles.

When you bring your preregistered lunch stub to the kitchen popup on the field, you will NOT need to hunt for or find your feast gear beforehand — you only need to bring your drinking vessel.

You will receive a plastic spoon and hot cup filled with:

  • Lentil soup (generous ladles of bacon bits will be added for those who are not vegetarian)

You will also receive a tied cloth napkin filled with various items in individual ziplok bags or wrapped in aluminum foil:

  • Fresh seasonal fruit & dried fruit (most likely grapes and dates)
  • Olives
  • Homemade Flatbread
  • Herb- & Garlic-Marinated Chicken Kabobs on Skewers
  • Fried Parmesan Zucchini Spears
  • Caraway & Pepper Cucumbers
  • Pickled Carrots
  • Cinnamon Shortbread
  • Butter Cookies with Currants

There will also be a large drink dispenser filled with iced water; you can add your choices of:

  • Lemon Syrup
  • Sikanjabin (mint vinegar) Syrup, or
  • Lemon slices

The children of Æthelmearc were then invited forward and were given a token by Their Majesties.

Next, Steinervor Hest was invited before the Court. Their Majesties spoke of her diverse service, skills, and arts; from woodworking to brewing, her hospitality, her service and graciousness at demonstrations and events, and her willingness to teach others. Thus, Their Majesties were minded to raise her to the ranks of the nobility and did Award her Arms. Effen Lavosch then attend Their Majesties, who spoke of her eagerness to assist at feasts and event, her enthusiasm, and her sharing her joy of the Society with others, and so did create her a Lady of the court by Awarding her Arms. Her Majesty then called for her Rapier Champion, Lord Durante de Caravaggio. She spoke of the quest She placed on him to speak to others and to learn the history of the creation and bearers of the rapier of the Queen’s Champion. She told of Lord Durante’s successful completion of that quest, and his presentation of his findings to Her. However, She went on to explain that not only did he complete the quest, but that he then went further by creating a lineage book of the Queen’s Rapier Champions that will be passed to each successive Champion so that each champion may add their name and the name of the Queen they serve, and may know of the history and lineage of the sword they carry and of their predecessors and the Queens they served. For this act above and beyond what was asked of him, Her Majesty named Lord Durante her Inspiration and did bestow upon him a Golden Escarbuncle.

Their Majesties then called forward the scribes and artisans who contributed works for Their court and presented them with tokens of appreciation.

Their Majesties invited His Highness, Prince Timothy of Æthelmearc, into Their Court. His Highness thanked Their Majesties for Their time on the thrones, during which They stewarded Æthelmearc with boundless love and generosity, but reminded Them that He had been promised the throne on this day. Duke Sir Christopher Rawlyns, Kingdom Seneschal, confirmed that there had been a tournament held in accordance with Society and Kingdom law, and that His Highness had been victorious. He then carried words from Master William Parris, Kingdom Earl Marshal, that the tournament had been held in accordance with the laws of the Earl Marshal and that His Highness was the right and honorable champion. Baroness Aemilia Soteria brought words from Baroness Rynea von Ingen, Kingdom Minister of Lists, that the list had been right and true and His Highness had emerged victorious. Kameshima Silver Buccle testified that he had been present that day, and that His Majesty had indeed crowned His Highness as His heir and promised Him the throne.

Knowing that Their time on the thrones was nearing an end, Their Majesties bid His Highness hold for a few moments, that They might properly thank those who assisted in Their reign before departing the thrones.

Her Majesty then called for Her Captain of the Guard, Don Jacob of Dunmore, who then called to be attended by the Queen’s Guard. Her Majesty thanked Don Jacob and the Guard for their service to Her and then did release them from their duties, bidding each of them keep their guard’s scarf as token of their service.

Their Majesties next were attended by their Majordomo Mester Mazaros Janos and Their Head Retainer Baroness Rowena Moore, and upon thanking them for their service, released them from their duties.

Kameshima Silver Buccle then called for Maestro Orlando di Bene del Vinta, divested him of the title and position of Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald, and released him from the oaths to which he had been bound, save that of the confidences entrusted to him by Their Majesties.

Their business being concluded, Their Majesties once again called for Their Heir, Prince Timothy. King Marcus thanked his Lady Queen for her companionship, guidance and wisdom through Their reign. Then He removed Her crown and placed it into the trust of Silver Buccle.

As his last act as King, Marcus III placed the Crown upon the head of Timothy III and proclaimed him King of Æthelmearc.

The Barons and Baronesses of the Debatable Lands, Thescorre, Rhydderich Hael, Delftwood, Blackstone Mountain and Endless Hills swore their fealty unto Their Majesties.

Those Royal Peers and members of the Order of Chivalry, the Order of the Laurel, the Order of the Pelican and the Order of Defense as were present pledged their service unto Their Majesties.

Kameshima-kyō Silver Buccle did call Dame Kateryna ty Isaf before him and, upon receiving her oath, did name her Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald. Kateryna Jewel of Æthelmearc then swore her service and fealty to Their Majesties.

Their Majesties called before them Baroness Amelia Soteria, Head of Their Royal Household and received her oaths to keep Their Household and Confidence and accepted her as Their head of household and staff.

Their Majesties then invited before them His Excellency, Sir Murdoch Bayne and Her Majesty requested that he act as the Chivalry Advisor to Her Majesty’s Guard.  Sir Murdoch accepted the position and advised that he was ready to instruct and stand as council for Her Guard.

Her Majesty called forth Lord Cormacc mac Gilla Brigde as Captain of the Queens Guard and the members of Her Guard.  Lord Cormacc swore oaths on behalf of all Her Majesty’s Guardfolk to protect Her person so long as She is the Queen of the Sylvan Lands.

Their Majesties called forth Lady Elena de la Palma and the members of the Royal Retinue.  Lady Elena swore oaths on behalf of the Royal Retainers to serve Their Majesties throughout Their Reign.

Their Majesties invited before Them Duke Marcus Eisenwald and Baroness Margerite Eisenwald. His Majesty spoke of the inspiration both the former King and Queen had been during Their time upon the Sylvan Thrones.  His Majesty in particular was moved by Duke Marcus’s artistry and comportment and knowing that His Grace had no Ducal coronet, gifted him with the Second Coronet made by His Majesty’s own hands.  They reaffirmed his rank as Duke and thanked him for his fine stewardship of Æthelmearc.  Their Majesties remarked upon the grace her Excellency had shown during her time as Queen and the inspiration the populace took from her love of the Kingdom.  They conferred upon her the title of Countess and placed her Diadem upon her brow to mark her status while his Grace held her hand.  They then called upon the Orders of the Rose and Garnet to invest Her Excellency as the newest Rose of Æthelmearc. Countess Caryl spoke of the particular duties of being a Queen and how well Margerite had fulfilled those duties and welcomed her on behalf of the full order to take her place among them.  The Roses placed the cloak of the Order upon her shoulders knowing she would bear its weight with diginity. From the Scrolls of the Reign of Timothy and Gabrielle, Third of Their name as recorded by Dame Kateryna ty Isaf, Jewel Herald with the assistance of Kameshima-kyō Zentarō Umakai, Silver Buccle Herald, at Their Coronation in the Barony of Thescorre on April 22, Anno Societatis LI.

The Court of Their Majesties was resumed to read following pieces of business:
On April 22, 2017, do We, Timothy and Gabrielle, King and Queen of Aethelmearc, expel Dan Heyman, known in the Society as Dan of the Debatable Lands, from participation in any SCA Activity.
On April 22, 2017, do We, Timothy and Gabrielle, King and Queen of Aethelmearc, expel Derek Holton, known in the Society as Bluestar, from participation in any SCA Activity.
On April 22, 2017, do We, Timothy and Gabrielle, King and Queen of Aethelmearc, expel James Henry Schaffer IV, known in the Society as Cadan Buri, from participation in any SCA Activity.
The Court of Their Majesties was then suspended.
The Court of Their Majesties, Timothy and Gabrielle resumed in the afternoon.
The Sylvan Bard, Lady Magge Illfoster performed a piece entitled “The Rose of Arindale” in honor of Her Majesty and written for Their Coronation at the invitation of His Majesty to “surprise Him”.  Their Majesties took a moment to regain composure and His Majesty thanked Lady Magge and the Court for gifting Them with a moment of magic in the Society.  His Majesty accounted it among the most memorable moments of his SCA life.

Their Majesties called forth Lord Snori skyti Bjarnson and praised him for his extensive work in the archery community.  They inducted him into the Order of the Keystone with a scroll Painted by Anngs de Vaille and calligraphed by Mistress Graidhne ni Ruadh.  They then asked him to remain before Them and called forth his son.

 Their Majesties inquired as to if the young Snorison had heard of the tradition of the chasing of the toy chest.  When he advised he had not, They called forth all the children present and explained that They had instructed Lady Svava of the Bog to take the chest of toys and run away from the children with a small head start and squires acting as blockers.  Once the host of children descended upon said lady, they were to take one toy each, beginning with the youngest child present and leave her otherwise intact.  A countdown was made and the children chased the toy chest bearer from the court.

Their Majesties called forth Lord Sebastian Mora advising that he was known to be a consistent hand in helping cooks and autocrats. Further was he known to be a person who helps with the set up and take down of event sites at every location he was present.  Seeing the fine work behind the scenes done by Lord Sebastian, Their Majesties inducted him into the Order of the Keystone with a scroll by Lady Vivienne of Yardley.

Their Majesties then invited Baron Tigernach mac Cathail and Lady Margareta Le Sayre to speak of the Spark Challenge.  Baron Tigernach and Lady Margareta explained that Their Majesties,  seeking to enrich the Kingdom, its populace both new and old are charged with a quest to try new things they have never before done or have not done in a great deal of time.  They further charged all gentles of the Kingdom with the task of recognizing such new endeavors by bestowing a pearl or similar token upon the person.  When a noble citizen of Æthelmearc has received 8 such tokens, they may present themselves to Their Majesties to receive a token marking the completion of the quest.
Their Majesties invited Baroness Alexandra dei Campagnella, Sylvan Signet to present herself to them and agreed that the time had come for her to step down.  They asked if she had a successor and she advised she actually had two.  Their Majesties invited Mistress Antionette de la Croix and Lady Shirin of Susa before Them and taking their oaths of Service, accepted Them as the new Sylvan Signets.

Among the scribes who bore witness to the oath of the new Sylvan Signets was Baroness Juliana Rosalia Dolce da Siena.  Their Majesties bid her to please kneel before Them.  They called forth the most Noble Order of the Pelican.  Speaking of all her great work where often it is not seen, They advised there were many who saw her and spoke of her worth.  She was commanded to attend Their Majesties at Pax Interuptus to sit vigil and contemplate induction into the Order.  The writ scroll was created by THLady Zofia Kowalewska.

Their Majesties invited before them the Ambassador of the Mid Realm, Lord Michael of Exeter.  Lord Michael advised he came bearing gifts of friendship from Their Highnesses William and Isolde.  Having accepted the gifts of friendship, Their Majesties advised Lord Exeter to convey that They returned that friendship.

Their Majesties called forth Lady Elska Fjarfell.  They spoke to her of how impressed They were with the works she has created and how They have seen the entries she made for Ice Dragon and knew her handiwork from the level of detail and research that went into each entry.  They called forth the Order of the Fleur d’Aethelmearc and asked that she be welcomed as their newest companion, changing her title to The Honorable Lady Elska Fjarfell.  Scroll created by THL Mairghread ni Stilbheard uu Coinn.

Their Majesties invited before Them Mistress Alicia Langland, Master Robert of Sugargrove and The Honorable Lady Jacqueline de Molieres.  They thanked the three for the creation of the Royal Throne and its beautiful baldequin.  Their Majesties remarked that the Kingdom has benefited from the beauty of the embroidery of THL Jacqueline and They felt there were others who concurred.  Their Majesties called for the most noble Order of the Laurel to attend Them and delivered to THL Jacqueline a Writ of summons to attend Them at Æthelmearc Academy to sit vigil and contemplate induction to said Order.  The scroll was calligraphed by Mistress Antoinette de la Croix with wording by Mistress Marguerite d’Honfleur.

Their Majesties bid Baroness Alexandra dei Campagnella to remain before Them and spoke directly to the Populace.  They thanked Duke Tindal for his service as Kingdom Warlord but noted that with his move to the East Kingdom, They found Themselves in need of a new Warlord for the coming Pennsic War.  They then advised that Mistress Alexandra had agreed to serve her Kingdom as Warlord and advised that in matters marshal for the betterment of the Kingdom War host, she speaks with Their authority.

Their Majesties invited before Them the autocrats of the event Baroness Orianna and Lady Venezia.  They thanked both for the wonderful event and asked that this thanks be passed to the entire staff.  Her Excellency commented that it is a great joy to have a staff that can be entrusted with all tasks great and small and that she would thank them outside of court as well.

Their Majesties asked that the scribes who contributed to the works of art presented this day to the members of the populace please stand and be acknowledged for their selfless gifts.

Her Majesty then asked that Lady Felice de Thorton come forth.  Her Majesty spoke of the particular difficulties in having a spouse far away when one travels to events.  She advised that She too has felt this burden when the King is called from Her side and that She appreciates and values the effort Lady Felice showed to come to the event and further to be such a joyous presence in the day.  She asked all to recognize Lady Felice as Her Majesties inspiration of the day and bestowed upon her a Golden Escarbuncle.
