***Write to them.***
The SCA’s Board of Directors currently has a lot on their plate to discuss (see below). But they don’t discuss matters in a vacuum. The BoD depends on commentary from the populace, specifically via email (or postal mail).
Sadly though, we populace folk as a whole are just not that good at writing to them. For a recent commentary period about proposed wording of adding a Peerage for non-heavy, non-rapier martial activities, out of 8,000 known participants in those activities, there were less than 400 comments – over 95% of the communities were effectively silent. Other matters likely get far worse response.
Posting on social media and talking to our friends about it might make us feel heard, but it’s not heard by the Board.
What to do? Write to them, and follow their directions from the corporate communications about those matters! Here are some more handy tips to make sure your comments are heard:
1. Send your email to SCA-Comments@sca.org . Nowhere else counts.
2. Use the subject line they told us to use in the corporate communication (see also below)
3. Do not send any attachments or links. Emails with those could go to spam.
4. Keep it short, keep it clear, and keep it factual to the extent you can.
5. Keep it polite.
6. Include your membership number, if you’re a member.
7. One person, one email. Don’t write one letter for multiple people. They all should write from their own email addresses.
8. Include a very short summary of your relevant activity participation details (for example, if you’re authorized or a marshal, your length of participation, etc.) Concisely. Relevant to the matter.
9. Include your modern and SCA names as they’d appear on the membership rolls. You can include other SCA or modern qualifications if they are relevant to the issue at hand.
10. Really, keep it short.
11. Write once within a commenting period.
12. No threats. Particularly not death threats.
