Bear the Wallsbane, Funeral services

Viscount Sir Bear the Wallsbane

From Viscountess Judith of Kirtland:

Viscount Master Syr Bear, my friend and first citizen of Æthelmearc, died at his home Saturday, sitting at his computer. His family and I will be arranging his service (see below).

He also asked that a party be held in his memory at Pennsic; of course, this will be done. He leaves a Bear-sized hole that will never be filled.

Bear’s funeral services will be Friday, January 27, 2023 at Dusckas Funeral Home, 2607 Buffalo Road, Erie, PA 16510, between 2 to 3 P.M. (visitation) and 3 to 4 P.M. (memories).

Thank you for your kind thoughts; Bear knew he had friends but he didn’t know how much he was loved.

Blackfox awards

Greetings Good Gentles,

The Chroniclers of the Known World are producing wonderful publications that add so much to each canton, barony, and Kingdom, as well as our Society as a whole. Every group from the smallest shire to the biggest Kingdom brought forth so much information, entertainment, knowledge, and light in a rather dark world, writers, artists, photographers, cartoonists, and others all working together to brighten our lives and increase our knowledge and awareness. There were so many wonderful articles, poems, short stories, and more. The list goes on and on.

The William Blackfox AwardsThe William Blackfox Awards nominees were such a joy for me to go through. If you have not been reading your group newsletters, now is a good time to start! Also, please make your own contributions to your newsletters and you may someday see your name and work in this list. Recipients of this prestigious award will receive a Master William Blackfox token (newly designed for this year), a certificate, and the right to use “Master William Blackfox Award Winner (or also, Commendation or nominee), [category], AS LV (56)” in their newsletters with the Blackfox logo.

Special thanks to my judges, Asta and Riordan, who assisted me in the choosing of the A.S. 56 William Blackfox Awards winners. Also, big shout-out to Patrice for designing and producing the new Blackfox award medallions. I am indebted to you all. And now, with no further ado, I present the Master William Blackfox Awards for A.S. 56! Well done, everyone!

With thanks,

Cecilia Blythe, OP

Budget Meeting, College of Heralds, Letter of Intent

Hello Æthelmearc! Your Gazette editors have noticed there are two separate meetings occurring virtually Thursday that you may be interested in… at least, we hope they’re separate (they are)!

Master Illadore, Kingdom Seneschal notes that the Æthelmearc Budget meeting will be held on Zoom on this Thursday at 7:30pm. Links will be posted to the mailing list and our official social media outlets closer to that time.

Meesteres Odriana vander Brugghe has the following to say about the Heraldic commenting meeting:

This Thursday, 5 January 2023 at 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Dame Elsbeth will be holding Heraldic Commenting over Zoom.

We will be jointly commenting on the Aethelmearc Internal Letter of Intent. If there is time, we may comment on other items as well.

There is NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

We can find ways to include you or you can just join and listen. Also, feel free to join us if you have any question about names or armory that you would like to submit – we can help you with what information the College of Heralds needs in order to pass your name, heraldry, or badge.

Please contact Dame Elsbeth at elsbeth (at) pobox (dot) com for the Zoom information.

Also, if you would like to add this event to your online calendar, please follow this link. It will immediately take you to where you can add the event to your calendar. COVID Team Update

Covid Policy, Covid-19, map

Good morning!

The COVID Transmission map is looking better!

We have several areas where transmission is listed as Moderate, including places like Misty Highlands (Mon County specifically), Heronter (Chautauqua County), etc. If your event/practice/gathering/meeting are in those areas, masks are not required.

We also have areas where transmission is high or substantial. Masks are required in those areas.

I also wanted to let folks know that Æthelmearc’s Covid Team, which now includes Sir Maghnus an Chnoic na n’Iora (Dr. Joel Welling, PhD) and Duke Christopher Rawlyns (Dr. Chadd Nesbit, MD, PhD), and myself, are still in the process of determining how to improve ventilation with such things like the Corsi-Rosenthal boxes at SCA events/practices that may allow for not requiring masks (AKA a variance to the variance) and we’re making progress. We should have more information out about that soon.

Thank you all so much and enjoy your weekend,

Illadore de Bedegrayne/Monica Gaudio

Æthelmearc’s Mask Variance and Covid Policies

03 Thursday Nov 2022

covid, masks

You can see the new video on BOD approved variance on masks here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owI7B48vCDA

Transcript:

Hello. I am Illadore de Bedegrayne, Æthelmearc’s Kingdom Seneschal.  I’m here today to discuss AE’s covid policies and the new mask variance, and why we asked for the variance, AND how Æthelmearc is going to help local groups with this variance.

After being asked by several members of the populace, and in discussion with Duke Christopher, our deputy Kingdom Seneschal for Pandemics, I asked the SCA’s Board of Directors for a variance for Æthelmearc to continue its mask requirements (where masks are required inside when transmission is high or substantial in the local county) and it was granted by the BOD.

We asked for this variance because we want to protect our people. The variance is based on the high and substantial transmission rates of Covid-19 across WV, PA, and NY.  Currently, all of Æthelmearc has almost entirely high and substantial transmission, according to the CDC covid transmission map. Also, per the NY Times Covid-19 charts, WV, PA, and NY have had relatively flat rates of Covid-19 transmission and deaths since July. We have not seen a trend downwards like we were hoping – and we expect, due to what happened in Winters 2020 and 2021, we will see a spike in transmission rates across all of Æthelmearc.

One of the main reasons that we are asking everyone to wear masks indoors when transmission is high or substantial is that we want to be inclusive. We want our members and subjects who are most susceptible to Covid – people who are disabled or immunocompromised or over 50 – to be able to attend events. We also want to protect folks from Long Covid. Recently studies from Scotland show that approximately half of the study’s participants who got Long Covid were still suffering over a year later. Other studies have shown that people can get Long Covid from repeat infections.

We want to protect our people. We are a Society based on the core Chivalric values of honor and service and one way you can do honor to others and serve is to wear a mask indoors and help prevent transmission. We also know, per the Wall Street Journal, when both individuals are wearing masks, it greatly reduces the chance of transmission, much more than just one person wearing a mask.

We know that other Kingdoms are not requiring this – all I can say to that is that I remember the Æthelmearc unofficial motto – “it’s just better here.” We care about our people and want everyone to be able to come to events and be as safe as we can make it for everyone.

The Kingdom also wants to help out local groups. Their Majesties came up with the idea that we provide N95 masks (or the like) for those who want or need them. We have created a budget to help reimburse local groups that want to provide them at events. We also are willing to work with groups and help fund safety plans – such as renting tents and heaters for outside feasts or separating small household groups for feasts. Or if groups want to build Corsi-Rosenthal boxes as air purifiers, we’ll work with you on that too.

This decision is not going to be popular with everyone. We know this and we hope this video will help explain our thinking as to why the Kingdom needs this. Just know that we hear you and we will work with you regarding your situation. Just email me at seneschal@aethelmearc.org and we will do our utmost best to come up with ways for you to have events or practices and do them in a safer manner.

Last but not least remember that we had a Vikings in the Snow event once and it was lovely. Put on your wool outfits and go outside to help protect your friends and fellow members.

Thank you all and I hope you stay safe and happy.
