Rumblings of War have reached our borders and to help prepare, the Shire of Steltonwald invites all to gather at Cooper’s Lake Campground May 19-22, 2022 for the Æthelmearc War Practice XXXI.

Class coordinator Lady Vika Vyborskaia would like to remind the populace that this week is THE LAST CALL to schedule your class or order meeting for War Practice!

The deadline being this coming Friday, April 27th. Get your classes and workshops on the schedule to make sure you have room inside the wonderful water proof and sun shading class tents. This is a perfect opportunity to dust off those in-person make & take classes we’ve missed so much during our Plague-induced shift to virtual class offerings. Please email Lady Vika asap as there are still a few time slots available for Friday and Saturday!

Merriment in the Brewers Tent – the brewers competition and social of War Practice 2019.

The Royal Æthelmearc Guild of Brewers, Vintners, and Meadhers plans a well deserved Round Table and Social of copious libations, lively discussions and stories of unusual plague brewings… We invite anyone to come hang out with us – and brewers, please bring a sample of whatever you concocted to share! Tentatively scheduled for Friday early evening. Contact Elska with any questions.

Master Robert of Sugar Grove teaching the Youth of Æthelmearc how to safely operate a hand plane, War Practice 2019.

The much anticipated Wood Workshop and Hand Tool Tastings will happen once again under the expert tutelage of Master Robert of Sugar Grove. He loves sharing his knowledge with those gentles interested in learning more about hand tool woodworking as well offer the opportunity to experience hand tools and equipment often unfamiliar to the modern woodworker.

But wait, there is more! Once again War Practice will have access to the Great Hall! Bring your projects in progress! Bring your curiosity! Bring your displays! Saturday from 1 to 5pm we will have A&S PLAY TIME! Stay tuned for more detail…

And during A&S Playtime, The Kingdom Ministry of Arts & Sciences will arrange for an A&S Consultation Table for those new, and not so new, to the arts & sciences to chat about projects, progress and inspirations as well as ask questions about research, documentation and entering for future events. The KMoAS is here to enable serve your A&S endeavors to the best of our combined abilities!

Come join us as we endeavor to explore all of the martial and arts & sciences activities the society offers. This will include Rattan, Fencing, Archery, Thrown Weapons, Combat Archery, and Siege with several Kingdom Championships on the schedule. The peaceful pursuits include an extensive A&S class track and meetings, as well as shopping, dancing, and more.

Shenanigans by Master Robert of Ferness and THLady Lasairfhiona inghean Aindriasa in the Brewers tent involving big and tasty balls… Chocolate Beer Bacon Brownie Balls – really what else could we mean?!

For updates as they become available, please visit the Steltonwalt website and keep an eye out for the Class Schedule next week.

A&S, Virtual Learning

To help our artisans navigate the medieval and renaissance arts & sciences while living through our current time of making history, the Kingdom Office of Arts & Sciences has added a chapter of Virtual Resources to our website. On this page you will find links to interesting and informative YouTube videos, websites and Facebook group pages devoted to various topics, as well as other useful A&S information.

The information is divided into two parts: first we list all our Kingdom and populace resources, and second we list virtual resources from all over the Knowne Worlde. Included are Æthelmearc Book of Faces arts & sciences groups, as well as Society-wide arts & sciences groups; Kingdom & populace YouTube channels and playlists; populace websites; populace publications (hosted on Academia). As well as society-wide Virtual Learning, of which the Book of Faces group SCA Virtual Classroom and Artisan Display has gained the most traction, and society-wide general arts & sciences Facebook groups (of which there are so many!).

To see Tony Robinson squirm his way through fulling woolen fabric with lots of human urine, watch The Worst Jobs in History: Middle Ages

I even included a list of my favorite free YouTube channels and playlists of documentaries and shows detailing medieval and renaissance life for those days we’d rather see someone else go through the effort of… fulling woolen cloth with human urine (Tony Robinson in The Worst Jobs in History)… cooking indoor dinner over open fire without a chimney (Lucy Worsley in If Walls Could Talk)… building a castle from scratch (I kid you not, and that would be Guedelon Castle in France)… or kitting out and training a medieval war horse (Modern History TV) – there is something funny, intriguing, educational, for anyone.

Our list will be updated as information becomes available –and we hope this will be soon, too! Are you an Æthelmearc citizen and do you have a blog, a website, a YouTube channel, or an Academia profile that we did not as of yet list? Please share! The more, the merrier!

Of course, it is our full intention to keep our Kingdom collection of Virtual Resources available and updated for now, as well as for the future.

Yours in service,
Elska

virtual A&S, YouTube

Office of the Minister of Arts & Sciences

The Æthelmearc Kingdom Office of Arts & Sciences is looking to collate Virtual A&S resources for on the KMOAS website. And for this we need your input!

Do you have a Youtube Channel?

Do you post How-To videos on your blog?

Do you have virtual DIY workshops?

If you are planning to make a virtual class but don’t have a personal channel? You are welcome to host in AEtube SCA, the Kingdom of Æthelmearc personal Youtube channel.

The help the Kingdom Arts & Sciences thrive, THL Astridr Vígaskegg recently started the group Æthelmearc e-Schola, on the Book of Faces. She mentions that in light of the recent event cancellations happening across the Known World in order to slow the spread of COVID-19, many of us are finding ourselves yearning for our SCA comraderie while confined to our homes. Fear not! For in this age, we have… the Internet.

She hopes the Æthelmearc e-Schola would ideally hold an online series of classes soon, but that it will also serve as space to host and organize online classes for any and every occasion. We are still ironing out details for which methods of presentation will be available to us, but as long as you have a smartphone or a headset and microphone, you WILL be able to teach a class, and WE will be here to help you do it. All we need right now is YOU — if you are interested in teaching a class, please email Astridr.

Virtual SCA and A&S on the Book of Faces:

  • SCA Virtual Classroom and Artisan Display
  • SCA Virtual Campfire (UNOFFICIAL)
  • SCA Online Virtual Bardic Night

Virtual SCA resources – classes and A&S displays:

  • East Kingdom Ministry of Arts & Sciences: list of online webinars
  • East Kingdom Ministry of Arts & Sciences: online A&S displays
  • Kingdom of Calontir virtual A&S classes
  • Kingdom of Artemisia: virtual University

We would like to offer the budding wealth of virtual classes to the populace which is not on the Book of Faces, or prefers to browse the offerings all in one place. We’re hoping to assemble a central depository – if you are planning to set up something new, please run it by your Kingdom A&S ministers (we’re home & bored too!) so we can add it to the Kingdom website and check to see if someone else is not already doing the same thing too. And you are encouraged to cross-post your virtual class both to the SCA Virtual Classroom and Artisan Display FB group as well as to our e-Schola!

As we just started collecting this material (and deal with homeschooling a bored and cooped up pre-teen) I am sure we missed resources. Please contact me via the Book of Faces, or by email, with anything you think would benefit our A&S community.

Looking forward to sharing what our awesome Kingdom has to offer in this time of need!

Yours in Service,

Elska

If the Roaming Library does not have what you need, perhaps the merchant book shelves do – and  bring your precious home!

And don’t forget the…

KMOAS Consultation table, hosted by the Kingdom minister of Arts & Sciences Hrólfr á Fjárfelli. He welcomes anyone with questions about Arts & Sciences! Like, how do I enter an A&S display or competition? What do I need to do to enter an A&S display or competition? What is this thingy called documentation? Can I get some feedback on a project I’m working on? I have trouble (re)searching online, do you have any suggestions? …?  For this, and more, visit the KMOAS Consultation table.

Roaming Library, also hosted by Master Hrólfr á Fjárfelli. He will bring two book cases, and a couple crates of books on Costuming, including Viking and Anglo-Saxon eras. Bring a camera if you hope to bring back a chapter or two for research. And if you have something you think others would enjoy to take a peek at, please bring and share too (with name) – he and his minions will stand guard all day to protect the Hoard!

Region 3 Brewing Round Table, hosted by Master Gille MacDhonuill. Want to talk about making brews of all types stop by and share your recipes, ideas, or learn more about the art of alcohol? Then this is where you want to be, starting at 3 pm – home brews not required but always welcome, of course.

Yours in Service,
THL Maggie Rue
